I went through three cases (all from Spigen) before I settled on the smallest and arguably least-protective of the lot - the Ultra Fit. But if offers enough protection from a drop to the back and sides and is very thin.
I, too, like the GN3 naked but the Ultra Fit small enough to work. I like that it provides a little extra protection to the 'exposed' camera lense, which call exposed because it's raised.
As for the front, I agree that your average mylar type screen protector would provide a little protection in a drop. I use a glass protector with a decent hardness rating. They are pricey, but my theory is that they would provide much better protection than a plastic screen, they feel much better to the touch (just the like the regular screen) and if dropped hard enough or on something protruding it might shatter and absorb the force and save the screen.
Needless to say, I'm not going to put it to the test. I have yet to drop this phone. I'm not a kid and my GN3 generally stays in my pocket when not in use. And because it's too big to fit into my shirt pockets it now rides in my front pants pocket. Nearly all of my previous phone drops (the few that there were) were often from shirt pockets when bending over.
