note 7 possible recall? (repost sorry didn't see the earlier one)

I'm just hoping the replacement will have better reception than this one. That's really my only complaint with this phone. The reception is horrible I spend way more time on 3g now and sprints 3g is worse than dial up.
 
I get great reception on Verizon. I have no issues with this phone. Holding on to it until the replacement comes.
 
With a safety recall, companies tend to be a little more proactive even if it's a small number of reports. When you consider 30-40 exploding out of millions, it doesn't seem that bad, especially when you can't help wonder if it's due to 3rd rate cables being used to charge the devices. With the iPhone issue, they finally admitted the design flaw and replaced devices.

Can't see it been that somehow. If anything third-rate and faulty cables, can cause phones not to charge properly or not charge at all. The Note 7 isn't subject to a recall here in China, different battery supplier apparently.

One question I have, if I refuse to swap out my phone, will Google refuse me any updates as they think it may be a liability for them?

FYI it's Samsung, not Google, that pushes updates for their Galaxy devices. Could very well be a liability though, like if you refuse the safety recall and not swap out your phone. IANAL, you might not be able to sue Samsung if a defective unsafe battery subsequently combusts and burns your house down or something. Like if you had a car that was subject to a recall due to unsafe brakes, you refused the recall, e.g. "DO NOT DRIVE UNTIL CHECKED", kept on driving the thing and then crashed as a result of brake failure.

Samsung can and does refuse to update and not support devices in certain situations though, e.g. grey imports, or rooted and modified devices.

NBC mentioned (silly me, didn't know) that the situation is similar to hoverboards - same type batteries
 
I think many of us from the older generation still think our phones are like that old black or Princess/Trimline indestructable phones.

The problem is Corporations today are just pumping out products in short timeframes. The race to get something out to market without ample prototype testing and evaluation is becoming the standard. They have funds to cover the losses with no looking back. The Consumer has now become the Beta tester.

We take these devices for granted that they are harmless. Handling them with precaution is no different than wanting to leave your car running in an attached garage so it would be nice and warm/cool for you as you set off to work in the morning.

Considering it's Sprint, how can you tell if it's 3G and not really 4G? :p
 
I went to my local Verizon store to up-grade to the Note 7...... But, they are NOT selling the Note 7!
I'm pissed as I had set up the time to switch phones ( like it takes 30 minutes to set up your new smartphone ).
No date or time when they will sell them again. The sales rep said that the Notes were discontinued..... Till I questioned her twice.
Also I wanted to get in on the 256 GB card promotion...
Not a happy camper!

You are aware that the free promotion item ended on the 8/28 right. Valid purchase had to be by that date.
 
I'm curious about a question someone else raised here. Considering Samsung called this a voluntary recall, is there any chance that they will refuse to send updates to any phone that was recalled but is not returned?

No! A lot of people are not having issues with their phone. Those people do not have to return their phones if they do not want to.
 
I find this all very interesting. I noticed from when I got my Note7 that when charging it got REALLY hot. I have taken a routine of only charging it for 10 minutes or so every few hours in order to continue to use it. I am heading to my Verizon store this morning and will let you know what happens.
 
The problem is, Preach, that the people whose phones blew up on them weren't having issues, either. No warning! I'm not having a problem, but it's not a chance I'm willing to take if a fix is available.
, I'm curious how you know this? Because I've known two definite groups of people with this phone, those who do report that it gets very hot, and those who report, like me, that it's not getting hot at all. Since right now, the odds are 35 out of 2.5 million, how can we be sure that with the new device, our odds get to be less than that of having some other catastrophic issue?
 
Also, it might seem like someone's device just exploded with no warning. In fact, that is physically impossible. Before a device ignites, it is going to heat up to very hot levels. One's phone does not ignite if it is at room temperature.

I actually heard the opposite. That the phones were charging hot all the time. A guy on another forum said that his phone would always charge hot out of the box. He walked away came back and found a burn starting to show on the right side of his screen. He ran and unplugged his phone. I will post the picture when I find it again.

Seriously with the battery issue that I'm sure Samsung is trying to down play (obviously recall is major) so not to due anymore Brand damage. What's the value of a non-replaced phone? Zero if you ask me. What reseller would take on the liability. Is there any other first question when selling it later other than "is this a replacement phone?"

One point I haven't seen yet. Though the non removable battery I'm sure is a factor is water resistance. Sure would have been a lot easier to just replace the battery had it been removable!! My only regret is I've really got mine tweaked to the way I like it! With the widgets, Edge screen and folders (aside from calender's screen) I'm down to one screen!

Just thought of this. Could these be banned from airline travel?? Lithium battery's have been a hot topic!!

Not saying you should lie to a potential buyer, but how would they even know if it was a replacement phone or not?
 
I wonder if Samsung are regretting their decision to opt for non removable batteries in their recent phones. It would have been cheaper to just issue new batteries. :rolleyes:

This is a good reason why we don't have removable batteries. Fast charging conditions need to be exact, and problems can arise if owners are going to use cheap or non compatible batteries.

I am almost tempted to take T-Mobile up on their return/exchange offer but I can't be without a device for 2 - 4 weeks. I can always use my back-up phone, but i'd rather not.

The funny thing is, I haven't had issues with charging and now that I have it on battery saver mode, it goes for a little over 2 days. However, I turned my phone to look at the back yesterday and saw a crack and I am impeccable at keeping my gadgets in flawless condition. I never dropped it or anything and now there is a scratch/crack on the back.

Isn't gorilla glass supposed to be scratch resistant? I wonder how I got it.
 
Before exchanging our phones, we should conduct our own scratch and endurance test on the phones. See if we can scratch it with our keys, or break the glass with just a 3-foot drop.
 
It may be good safety practice if contemplating on sticking with the Note 7, or any cellphone for that matter, to charge it on non-combustible surfaces and at least 2 feet away from combustible materials if at all possible. For example, granite countertops, tile floors and if these aren't present then save a metal tin or similar container to put your phone in overnight or while charging where a fire can be contained.

This may be a wake up call to respect cellphones with potentially life threatening Li-ion batteries and place them in safe places. Certain aftermarket accessories such as cords or charging equipment are probably your worst enemy.

Lay the phone in a Pyrex baking dish when you leave it to charge, if you're really concerned about leaving it unattended.
 
I talked with the folks at my local Verizon store today, and they had no idea when replacement Note 7s would be in. Samsung called back EVERYTHING. So... I guess we'll all know when replacements are available.
