Notification Led Flashing Green/Orange?

Was charging my Hero last night and i noticed the led light was switching from orange to green light repeatedly and my phone was warmer than usual. I thought it was was just a malfunction cause I received a message on ebuddy and it was just doing that cause it was trying to tell me to things at once.

Woke up this morning and unplugged the phone, it was still really hot and about an hour or 2 later, it was at like 10% on battery (2 hours on standby with screen off and wifi on).

Is there something wrong with my phone/battery. Thanks.

Also: Didn't do anything special to it like flash a new rom. Running VR13, could it be that i need to reflash the rom?

From the User Guide:

if your phone is connected to a power adapter and is charging the battery, the LED will be solid red and will not switch to a flashing green light even if there is a pending notification.

Could be the battery has failed. Hopefully a replacement will be a solution.

Ordered a replacement two days ago, arrived today almost the same time as I noticed your post. I charged it fully as soon as it arrived before turning it on. Eveything was ok, no overheating and to take extra precautions, I even flashed Ele's Gingerbread rom. Everything was flawlessly until around the time I got home, I noticed the heat was going up again even though the phone was on standby in my pocket.

The battery life was low from a day of using it so it's charging atm. The orange/green light sin't flickering so it hasn't reached official overheating status yet but according to battery info, it's at 43.2 degrees celcius. I have no clue what's causing this, could it be the phone itself or could it be software related?

I didn't want to get a new phone till December or before ice cream sandwich rolled out so I hope I can fix these problems without getting a replacement. Thanks for the help.

It could be either tbh.

If it's software-related then it must be something driving the CPU hard to cause the heat; a wake-lock issue would only cause drain. Once charged, power off and pull the battery for a while to let it cool down. Then restart as normal but use it as little as possible. After a few hours check About phone/Battery usage and see what's at the top of the list. Click on the entries and look at CPU time etc - something may become obvious.

I'm going to do that thanks. But I also noticed that GPS was turned on automatically when i rebooted phone. Both wifi and GPS were turned on, and when I turned both off for a bit, it cooled down although when it was initially heating up, my GPS was turned off. After it cooled down, I turned on wifi alone and after a while it was heating up A BIT, but not at all as much. So I think I may have found the cause, but wifi never had this effect on me to before...if it's no bother, is there any advice you could give me on that? Cause I usually leave wifi on even in standy for email purposes. Thanks for the help, Slug.

Ok, I think I found the problem. Wifi is draining a lot for some reason and also causing the heat to go up. This is running Ele's rom. I usually leave wifi on to receive emails so right now I'm looking for a way to make wifi not drain too much. I turned it off and the phone cooled down. Do you think switching to LV kernel will do any good? Cause I need wifi on for email. Thanks

Strange.... I've not seen any such issues here with Elelinux 3.1 (soon to be 3.2 once I find time). What radio (baseband) are you using?

You haven't installed any new apps recently?

All I can suggest is let it run as normal for a while then, if it heats up again, check the Battery Usage list and see what the Wi-Fi % is. Something like Better Battery Stats (free in the Market) would also allow you to look for any process keeping wi-fi awake.

Nope, I haven't installed any new apps lately other than skype. Skype WAS giving me problems back on 2.1 but I disabled it in autostarts and it hasn't bugged me since. The battery isn't draining super fast anymore but the temperature is 37.3 degrees Celsius so I can feel the heat, but only with wifi on. Also, I can't find that app on the market it but I assume this one I found on XDA is the same one: [APP] BetterBatteryStats adds battery history back to Gingerbread - xda-developers
I'm just going to calibrate my battery so I'm draining it till death. Thanks for the info, I'll let you know if that resolves it.
