7. With the microSD card installed, connect your phone to your computer using a compatible USB cable

When I get to the point of #8, that is where it stops.
I am not getting the notification on my phone.

If you have a sd card installed you do not need to go in and set usb mass storage, you can leave it unchecked and when you plug in the usb cord you can just click on the notification bar and click on usb connection.
If you have that setting checked it will not give you that notification it will just act like a thumb drive for your computer.
check your my computer and see if an extra drive is showing up.

Nope, nothing. I do have an SD card in. Doesn't even show up in the computer.
I know the USB works as I've been charging with it.

Do you have the proper USB drivers installed? Did it work in the past on this same computer? Does the computer make the sound to let you know that a device has been detected and installed?

You can get proper Prevail USB drivers from the OneClick Root thread.

I downloaded the new drivers to have on hand, just in case. The problem is the pc or the phone does not recognize the usb ports at all. The phone chargers through the usb but nothing else happens.
It doesn't show up as being connected.
I know it's something simple and or stupid I'm missing.

Wyelkins is right . You need the Samasung drivers . Your phone will charge via usb without the drivers . You can get the drivers here :

Edit: it will may take some time to install the drivers . Just wait til they're installed and it should work .

Charging with a usb cable does not mean it will connect to the computer. Some usb cables only have the ground and the lead, thus making them charge only.

OK, this is getting old now.
I just used the phone to go to "drivers" for the download.
Here is the message I got:
Download unsuccessful. Cannot download. The content is not supported on this phone.

The drivers need to be on the computer, your phone will not be able to use them so they wont download, unless you have download crutch.apk which comes on the newer shabby mods

UMMMMM ....... Just wondering ?????? Weren't you using the original USB that came with your phone ?????? If so , it SHOULD have worked . If it didn't , you need to take it back .

No I was using a mini cable that I already had plugged in my computer.
The new one is the one from the OEM Samsung power supply.
All is good now.

I was having problems after installing the ShabbyMod 0.9 and it took me 30 minutes doing everything I could think of.. I switched from the stock usb/charge cable that came with the phone, to a blackberry one I had and it worked perfect. Only had the phone like 2 months :s

If the stock USB cable does not work , it is defective and should be returned . ALL STOCK USB cables are DATA cables .

EDIT : Let me break down STOCK before someone runs with it ..... The one that came with your phone .

yes I have several lg cables from other phones, and they work perfectly with those lg phones, including my optimus M however when plugged into the samsung phone they only work for charging.
I also have a samsung eternity 2. I used to have alltel and was merged to att I received the eternity 2 as my alltel phone was cdma. The cord for eternity works but the lg cords do not work on the eternity. So my conclusion is samsung did something different with the pins in the phone.

Yep , I agree . After trying other known USB data cables with the Prevail , I've found that only the one that came with the phone will work . Gotta be the pin set . :D

I have a cable that came in a package set with my phone case that works fine for data from my laptop to prevail. I have used it to transfer files, run ODIN and install shabbymod. Not distinctive markings or packaging to help see why it would be different than the other non stock ones that don't work

Like Optimus was saying . It has to be the pins in the phone . The stock data cable is an exact match to the data cable where other cables , even though they may allow the phone to charge , are not . If the data cable is missing even one pin receptacle or contact point , it will not transfer data . :p

I'm using the cable that came with my Samsung Galaxy Prevail and it is still not connecting to my PC. I'm running Windows 7 64bit... is it something related to the OS? I can't seem to find a driver anywhere to connect via USB.

I'll provide ya with the link to the drivers . If you are wanting to transfer music , ringtones , or other files to your SD card , do the following : connect USB , pull down your drop screen , tap USB connected , tap turn on USB storage . For doing Root or any other mods , make sure USB debuggging is enabled ! :D

NOTE : The drivers are in the very first post .
