What do I do when I want to flash something? Is there a link how to, that I can follow? Or do i just put the Zip on my card, Open my ADB and input a code to push it? Ive never accessed my phone this way until last night. Im guessing the process is similar to root, but would like a kick in the right direction. thanks.

Download Rom manager from the market.
Put the rom.zip on your SD
Open up rom manager and flash Clock work managment
Click on flash rom while your in Rom manager app
When it says wipe data/cache do it
watch it go
???????
Flashed rom

I'd suggest not using ROM Manager until you know how to flash thing manually and are comfortable with it. ROM Manager has been known to cause numerous problems and it's easily avoidable if you don't use it. You can d/l an app called QuickBoot, from there select recovery. Or power down your phone, hold volume down and power until you enter hboot. From there select recovery. If you still have the PG05IMG.zip from rooting on your SD card, DO NOT accept the update you're prompted to do. Select no and continue to recovery. After flashing make sure you remove the PG05IMG.zip from your SD card to avoid future issues

Chose Backup and Restore to make a nandroid backup (absolute neccessity!)
After backup
Wipe data/Factory reset
Wipe Cache Partition
Go to advanced>wipe Dalvik Cache
Wipe Battery Stats (Optional)
Installed Zip from SD card>chose zip from SD card
Select yes, wait, then back out using "go back" and reboot

what he said!!! ^^^

the method described by wormdoes is IMO the safest, and most reliable method of flashing roms.

everyone should at least know how to do things in recovery. once youre comfortable with it,if you still feel the need(for whatever reason ) to use rom manager,at least youll be doing so with the knowledge of how to apply the fixes when things dont work.

I have never had any problems with rom manager.. One could also just use CWM and manual flash it.. I dont use quick boot much

CWM=recovery. were not talking about quickboot, fastboot,or hboot.

thats fine if you use rom manger... but...

if you have a bootloop,do you know how to get into recovery and either restore a backup or reflash a rom to get back a working phone?

what if a flash goes bad,and your rom has no market and no rom manager? how will you fix that?

its fine if people want to use rom manager.really. but understand that things can happen that either keep the rom from fully booting,and/or keep rom manager from being present or useable, and if youre not familiar with recovery there are no fixes.

i have prolly flashed well over 100 roms on my 3 phones prior to getting the TB and ive never once gotten myself into a pickle that required an sbf file or hboot "return to stock" file. being active on the eris, droid 1,and incredible forums ive seen people get into some really akward situations with rom manager, and 9 out of 10 times or (more ) the users have no clue what to do since they have only used rom manager. i have seen situations where there was a bootloop and no recovery, and even a situation where there was a semi functioning rom with no rom manager,no market, and no custom recovery(droid 1).

i still strongly reccomend that everyone learns to use recovery(clockworkmod or an alternate of your choice, when there is one),whichever method they choose to use afterward.

Okay, the part about making a nandroid backup intrigued me. Does hboot offer this, or is it Quick Boot? Does hboot look like that screen I see with the three Androids on skateboards at the bottom? Sorry I am a complete n00b to Android and rooting, but I want to learn! :)

hboot=bootloader. its the white screen with colored lettering that lists your bootloader, radio, etc. info. since youre new to rooting and roming, all you really need to know about it at this point is that its a way to access clockwork recovery, wich is what you will use to make backup,do wipes, and flash roms,as described above.

quickboot is a market app that you can use to boot into clockwork recovery, its nothing more than an easier way to get to it.

again, clockwork is what we are refering to as "recovery",which is where the menus are to wipe, backup, and flash. :)

hope that helps :) feel free to ask questions,as its definately better to learn before, rather than after, when your phone is in an unusable state

Do all TB's have Clockwork Recovery built-in, or is it added as part of the rooting process? Or is this something I need to download from the Market before starting the root process?

Download ROM Manager from the market. Within that app, there's an option to install CWR.

Is there a way to get CWR without downloading ROM Manager? If there isn't and I need to use ROM Manager, can I just flash without using ROM Manager?

No, you'll want to use ROM manager to get CWR. Once you have CWR, there's nothing making you use ROM Manager to flash instead of the recovery. I've manually flashed all the the ROMs I've tried by going to recovery.

Ok thanks! Things are getting clearer for me as to what I need to do before rooting. One additional question about CWR... I read in a few places that CWR is interfering with the ability to charge the TB from a wall charger (or probably through USB), which discourages bump charging or runs the phone down to zero power. Has that been fixed?

It hasn't been properly "fixed," but if you turn on Fast Boot in the application settings, it'll fix the problem. =)

The problem seems to be that the TB will boot into recovery when you have the phone off and try to charge it. The reason those with out CWR are not seeing this is because the stock recovery is simply a black screen and you can charge from it.

The problem is that you can not charge while in CWR. So "bump" charging will not work anymore. However I have heard that if you turn on fast boot in Power under the Settings menu (the settings for your phone not CWR), then it will not reboot into CWR.

This is correct. I have CWM installed and Fast Boot enabled and I bump charge every morning without issue

So, can I leave the phone in Fast Boot all the time, or do I need to turn it on/off every time I charge the phone? And do I start using Fast Boot for the first time after I install CWR?

The phone setting Fast Boot has nothing to do with CWM other than allowing the phone to charge properly when off. Yes, you can leave it enabled all the time

You can use ROM Manager to reboot into recovery - no need to install and use a different app like Quickboot.

Open ROM Manager and click "Reboot into Recovery". Done.

hmmm... my phone shut itself off at work. i plugged it intot he car charger and it went right to clockwork. tried a coupletimes to reboot from clockwork, and each time it went right back to clockwork.i unplugged it for a couple minutes. plugged it back in and same deal  after a couple more unplugging and replugging and trying to reboot from clockwork,it finally booted to the OS instead of back to clockwork.

any idea? it was a minor pain and ive vowed to not let it get so dead it shuts off until a fix is discovered

This is what I have found out from experimenting. CWM WILL charge the phone while it is plugged in (don't know when Koush changed this), however the light will not come on to show it is charging.

Last night I was playing aroung flashing and backing up ROMs. I started with the phone plugged in and rebooted into CWR, I was at around 80% battery. After spening about an hour in CWR, making a backup and then flashing a rom. I rebooted the phone and was at 95% battery, I then unplugged and rebooted to see if it was just reading it wrong and when it came back on it was still at 95%.

So CWR will charge the phone, this also is why at first your phone wouldn't boot up but eventualy did after plugging and unplugging (everytime you plugged the phone in it was charging and eventualy it got enough of a charge to allow it to boot).

I'm a total n00b, but I'd love to start learning to do this stuff. I followed a step-by-step tutorial and used adb to root my tbolt. Now I'm wondering what I can do now that I'm rooted.

These steps seem easy enough and I'd like to try a custom rom, but first a couple of questions:

When i make this nandroid backup, where do i save it? computer harddrive? sd card?

Please assume that I have absolutely no prior knowledge. Before I follow the above steps are there apps that i need on my bolt? clockwork recovery? titanium backup? anything?

Thanks everybody for your help and patience.

clockwork will save it to your sd card, you wont have any options to put it somewhere else. however,it is an excelent idea,IMO,to keep copies of backups on your computer. that way you can delete the ones you wont need from your phone, but still have them "just in case".

to copy them to your computer, just connect your phone, chose disk drive option, then on your sd card locate the clockwork folder. your backups are stored in "backups" :p you can then just drag them from one place to another,or use whatever methods your comfortable with for moving files from point A to point B

the steps above are perforemd in clockwork recovery,so youll need that, and youll need rom manager to initially flash clockwork recovery. after flashing clockwork, pretend rom manager is not there ;)

titanium(or my backup pro) is a handy tool for changing roms,as they both will allow you to backup your user apps+data. after the new rom is installed, simply run a batch to "restore missing apps with data" and they will be restored with very little effort you your part :D

with titanium, youll need to purchase the pro key. dont be a tight ass its well worth the $$ as it lets the batch restore all the apps for you with the afore mentioned little effort. the free version will make you do them manually,1 at a time

Thanks. After reading your reply and a few other threads, I decided to try it. I'm now sporting das bamf 1.3. I feel like one of the cool kids.
