NSA Secretly Collecting Phone Records

Of course, we should all expect that the NSA only targeted Verizon and we shouldn't worry at all about any other US carriers being targeted in the same way. Move along here, nothing to see.

I have moved this to the Verizon forum. But if the conversation becomes too overly political it will be moved to the PCA forum. Thanks for understanding. :)

This is the perfect opportunity to demand Verizon to release you from a contract (if you have one with them.) Yell and scream at Verizon, tell them that is unacceptable, and tell them you no longer want to stay with them because they have already proven that they do not protect customer privacy.

NSA court order forces Verizon to give up sensitive subscriber data

I understand that the NSA needs access to find the terrorist and protect us.
but how far do we let them go?

ok.. it is only Verizon Communication .. not wireless, but wireless is under them. and it is only Verizon for now, that we know of because it is a secret. and it is only a rumor.

I am worried.. that we are losing our privacy and rights....
what are your thoughts?

With the level of technology we live with, i think you'd have to be a bit naive to think your communications are secure.

I wouldn't be surprised if every text, call, email, ect was searched for "hits" related to terrorism as it makes its way over the air

Whether or not thats ok is a different topic, and probably better suited for politics and current affairs

Uh, how can anyone blame Verizon for this? It's called a court order.

And who cares?

I do because this was all done behind closed doors. What has Verizon done to insure it's customers privacy? Verizon should have stood up for its customers, you know the people responsible for their existence. A secret court making secret orders that involves the general public's privacy, your right who should care.

I don't see anywhere in their contract that says that this isn't in violation of the agreement between Verizon and customers. I am going to look into a class action law suit against both Verizon and the National Security Agency.

The patriot act was signed in 2001. It was renewed and made permanent in 2005. It allows the government to do almost anything to protect us from the boogie man. And now people care?

That is probably what VZW is saying now too ;) As of others in the news lately, it is not their fault and always somebody else ;) The buck stops here, but it is not my fault it did! :) ;)

No disclosure to customers and no specific records, but all. Yep, that makes a lot of sense. Not the correct kind though.

As much as I don't like how Verizon has changed their phone plans lately I cannot blame Verizon for this. The federal courts are ordering Verizon to hand over this information. Verizon has no choice but to follow a court order.

I think the problem is many if not most people are asleep and not truly aware of these abuses.

The problem is there are already "selective" efforts going on with other gov branches, so the timing of this is at a bad time for trust.

The other issue is in the past, court orders were placed for a SMALL selection of records for suspected individuals. These goobs are taking ALL of the records. That ain't good, anyway you spin it.

Added: AND Verizon borked my S3 32Gb with a borking bad update. DOH!

The court order specifically prevented VZW from disclosure.

So just so we're clear, you want VZW to ignore a court order so you feel better? Are you insane? Why on Earth would they do that? Your issue should be with the NSA, not VZW.

Good luck, you'll need it.

There's no chance that VZW following a court order is enough to get you out of a contract.

The tin foil hats must be on clearance this week......

Nothing to do with tinfoil hats. A massive net haul of ALL Verizon call records is far beyond the need of the NSA. They have gone well beyond the bounds of a FIFA warrant. If the provider hasn't got the fortitude to challenge such an order, they are forfeiting their right to hold contract to their customers that were promised that privacy.

Yep the boogie man for sure. That would be the government.

The court specifically prevented Verizon from diclosing the fact that they were turning over ALL records for a specific period. Again this goes beyond the intent and in my opinion the authority of the FIFA court. Who has oversight on them?
