O.M.G Where is the begining?

Now that is a list of term :) again thank you many in that list i have wondered about :) and more and more glad to be here by the second the responses are very quick and informative

Yes, android is based on Linux, and runs a modified Linux kernel.

The different directories you see in a root explorer are the different portions of the OS. I wouldn't play with any of that if you aren't familiar with them

Simplified:

/boot contains your kernel

/system contains your ROM

/data contains the apps you install and your user data.

/storage is going to contain your files, pictures, ext

The post above is priceless: simple, concise and accurate.

If you keep this structure in mind as you study, you'll find it all makes sense in short order.

Kudos to Rxpert83 for this sage advice :)

Ya I especially like the part where it says dont play with it if your not familiar. so familiar comes before the play haha

Or at least have a few tried and true nandroids around ;):D

Nandroids are a complete snapshot of the current state of your device. Its a tool for root users/tinkerers and is our ultimate insurance policy

Ya I got some backups but still I would like to know what I'm doing at least in theory before I just go clicking and moving and deleting. I have looked through opened and closed things but have not touched anything yet.

You already have a stock rom for your device, and we can show you how to take a backup image (nandroid) for recovery purposes. These things are really very hard to permanently brick. (You did come across the term "brick", right?) If this phone is your daily driver, then I'd be cautious with the trial and error learning, but that doesn't mean you have to treat it like a it's a hungry Doberman and you have a pork chop around your neck. ;)

The safest thing to do, is to think about what you want to try and then ask us. We've screwed up more devices than you have fingers and experience is the best teacher. (Gosh, i hope you haven't had an accident with farm machinery )

As for being criticized for asking questions ... anybody says anything even slightly negative to you, you let me know and I'll have my Uncle Joe from South Philly pay them a visit. ;) :D

Well what I did was use droid tools and make a back up, then I did know how use it so I deleted it. Then I put this custom rom on my phone made by someone ( hope linking is ok )
[rom][4.2.1][haipai i9389] king rom 3.0 - xda-developers

It was ok but then I had a few things crash so I wanted to switch back. and found this other stock of my phone online

ROMs | i9389

I formated and flashed my phone with it and treated it like it was bricked. I do not know if that brought my phone back to complete stock but its the best I could do.

Finally Once I had my Phone stock as I could and working well I made another back up using droid tools which I now know how to use. and Have it saved and backed up on my phone and on pc and on usb stick.

Along with the custom rom and the stock rom I downloaded.

Now my goal is to make my own rom basically with the bare bones and apps I need and will use to maximize battery life and get ride of wake locks and boost speeds.

Does that sound decent or could I have done something different.

Tho I do have one question My phone on battery drain has phone idle and cell standby is that normal?

Links are fine. We like links as long as it's not nasty stuff.

While I'm not familiar with that utility, if it gives you a recovery method then you are fine using it.

As for the battery usage, if you aren't using your phone, then idle and standby will be the top consumers. I am getting the impression that batty life is a big concern for you. Can you give us some idea of what you are seeing now? IT could simply be you are not used to the amount of power sucked up by a smartphone, it could be an OS deal or you could have a wonky battery.

My natter was horrible when i first got it but it has been improving. Now i am trying to learn what all the wakelocks are and eliminate them the best i can.

- i keep wifi off
- i keep brightness low
- battery ap to make it deep sleep ( i think its called ds battery saver )

I was not worried about battery but then after a smart phone im like on it. what good is a phone that is out of power right.

I would use ClockworkMod or some actual recovery to make a nandroid backup. Not a software tool. External tools often have problems in my experience.

You don't need to compile a new rom to remove apps you don't need. Boosting battery life will be difficult by just removing things. Background services and processes are the bigger problem. A custom kernel may help boost speeds and battery life. Wake locks are an app thing. If an apps need one, it will ask for one.

Cell standby is the time your phone is without signal. That uses a lot of battery life because your phone is trying really hard to find a signal. The better your signal, the less your phone must work to hold on to that signal. Thus, better battery life.

If I am reading those screens correctly, you are showing 12% battery usage over 5+ hours or 2.3% per hour. That, my friend, is pretty good for a smart phone. :)

how do I make and use cwm to make a useable back up because I have it but do not know why, what or how to use haha.

and any recomentdation for the best batery life possible i am open to. also i want to make a rom to learn really plus there is not alot out there for this phone so maybe if i get good i can make a good one for people all while teaching myself.

ya im really doing my best before I reflashed it i had it lose only 1 percent over 10 hrs of sleep :). trying to get it back to that place.

I dont really use internet so I may get rid of all the google crap I read is a real help for batter.

plus email stuff because I do not use my phone for email.

CWM (ClockworkMod) recovery replaces the stock recovery partition on your phone and gives you some extra options. Boot to recovery. On your device I'm not exactly sure how, but it usually involves holding buttons down at boot.

When you boot into recovery, you will see an option for backup and recovery. Chose backup and it will make an image of your system and files that you can use to restore should there be a problem with anything you might do. This is what's known as a nandroid.

Once you do that, you will find the backup files in /clockworkmod/backups/<date>. Copy these files to a PC or flash drive for belt and suspenders backups. :)

bahaha is that what those are. I had a few on my phone and took them off today because they were taking up to much memeory haha.

I saved them of course but I do not know when they are from so maybe i should make a new one?

I need to buy and sd card right now i only got 2gb of room and those 2 backups took up most of it.

I know people who make a nandroid every time they change a home screen. Is't overkill, but storage space is cheap enough. It's really up to you. I keep only a few. I really don't go back to very old backups, but I like to keep a couple "just-in-case". (and we all know just-in-case means i pulled a bonehead maneuver with my phone ;) )

oh wow trust me. twice now I ended up with that boot loop thing it freaked me out big time. I gotta learn how to get into cwm properly because I only know how to do it through droid tools and in a boot loop you cant do it so i have had to reflash the phone.

Knowing what I know now I wish I could start again from stock and really back up stuff. but live and learn and know for next time :)

Think i have like 6 nandroids just now, one for each rom im using (playing with). I only make a new nandroid before i flash ANYTHING. even something stupid like a new text font or boot animation (these things have thrown me into a bootloop in the past and its so annoying when your latest nandroid is like 3months old lol) :)

Yeah. Anything you flash can cause irreversible damage to your current system imo
A bootloop isnt the end of the world though, its just a waste of 5minutes while you restore your nandroid

Ive even flashed roms that some dude online has ported to my device even though he doesnt own the device and has only tested it on his computer safe in the knowledge that it probably wont kill my phone. It either just wont flash, it wont boot, or things will crash and if that happens, ive just made a nandroid first so i can restore that and its like it never happened. (Dont try this at home lol, im maybe a bit reckless) :D

Typically if you make a backup you will always be alright. Just make sure you understand the consequences of rooting and roming, not you funky :), talking to our new guy here.

I have had many bad flashes and sometimes I forget to make backups :o, but using fastboot you can move factory images to your device, thus restoring it :)

Like everyone else said before me, we are always happy to help, just ask us!
