Observations after a week with DNA

Olrocker

Newbie
I came from an OG Incredible (which I liked a lot.) Some things I've noticed:

1) Help file vanished. It was on the phone when I got it and disappeared the same day. Now when you tap help it has nothing to show.

2) No on-phone search. OG Inc had it; I'm assuming it was crippled in the whole Apple lawsuit thing. Shouldn't we get it back now that HTC is paying Don Cookleone his vig?

3) Getting some "Bad Request" errors when browsing, primarily on NBC News Tech/Science page. Does it in stock browser and Chrome.

4) Speaker volume is low generally (lower than OG Inc), especially in Navigation. Earpiece volume on phone calls also pretty low.

5) Bluetooth phone calls in my Tundra not as clear as OG Inc.

6) A bit of glitchy behavior (not responding right away to touch inputs, screens flipping for no reason, etc.)

On the positive side, it looks great and the build quality seems good. The screen is very nice. Even coming from the 3.5" OG Inc, it doesn't feel too big (I have an Otterbox Defender coming, so the sleek design will become moot when it looks like I'm holding a black flip-flop up to my face.) Battery life is OK the way I use it. Never had more than 6G of stuff on my Incredible so the 16G fixed storage wasn't a concern for me.

Haha, LOL at the black flip-flop comment.

I'm thinking it will be that big with the Otterbox on it ;)

I may just have a bum unit; might take it back to my man at the VZW store to swap it out. I do hope we get an update to restore on-phone search with the Apple/HTC deal in place.

That would be Sense. Download a launcher like Go and disable Sense. Probably the first thing I will do when I get mine tomorrow.

My impressions of the phone have been great. Battery life, form factor and performance are all top notch. I do wish i could change the following:

1. Remove charger cover (i will probably just yank it off)
2. Wifi notification -- no way to turn it of so i just down off the wifi radio

Yup. Me too. All of the above. Though my battery cover is off already... :)

The only thing to consider ---

If and when you go to a wireless charger, you'll want to be able to cover that port as to not let unwanted dust inside.

Just something to think about.

Perhaps. One the other hand...

My Nexus didn't even have a cover and I had no issues. I've never had a door covering charging ports any of my last 4 phones. Never had any issues. I want the convenience of being able to easily and quickly charge the phone without fuss. Other folks will not mind much I am sure. Matter of preference I suppose...

There is no dedicated SEARCH button on the screen anymore but you push and hold the HOME button and it opens Google Now, which is one bad ass feature if you ask me.

On that screen you can search, use speech search or speech commands or just look at whatever information you customized on that screen.

It takes getting used to because HTC moved things around on us but once you're used to it you will love it.

There are two ways to have a dedicated search button on your screen. One is to add to any of your screens the pre-installed app, "Voice Search" (1 by 1) or you can add the pre-installed widget, "Google Search" (4 by 1). Once done, just tap the microphone icon and enjoy!

Yep, I added the Google search widget to my homescreen, love it. I've asked it what time the sun sets, and also looked up an upcoming flight of mine.

Commands I've used:
Navigate to...
Set alarm for...

And for parking meters: Set stopwatch for...

This phone is awesome.

My favorite is appts. Not only can you set them, but it will remind you based on travel time when it is time to leave for them.

When you say disable Sense, do you mean set the new launcher as the default or is there a way to stop Sense from running underneath without rooting the phone.

I also came from the original Dinc and everything has been an upgrade, just a couple things that I missed from the Dinc from having used it for a solid 2 years.

1) I missed the search button as mentioned before.

2) I missed the menu button right on the bottom instead of top right on the DNA. I have small hands so it's a little hard to reach at times.

I think that's about it. The biggest improvements is the battery life and display. I will admit, I am getting a bit tired of Sense as coming from 2 year old Dinc to Sense 4+, it basically is the same just minor feature improvements here and there.
