Official 2.2 update impressions thread!

Ugh, that silent/vibrate setting change is going to annoy me. Sometimes I want vibrate only, say if I am watching a movie/show here at the house and I don't want it loud interrupting me or the girlfriend.

But if its an important call I like to be able to feel the vibrate and ignore/accept at will. Guess this means I pretty much never use vibrate any more. =/

Does anyone know if using a program like Audio Manager will still give you seperate vibrate/silent controls?

I am a fan of the new alarm clock as well as the dock-esque feature without the dock (button to the left of the time in the alarm clock screen.

The loss of silent mode isn't a huge issue for me, but I'm sure it still exists. The Beautiful Widgets Beautiful Silent still works and displays the separate silent mode icon rather than the vibrate icon, and it is silent, no vibrating.

The full-screen notice that I have plugged the phone in USB is annoying. Anyone found a way to stop that from popping up?

Thanks for the pointer of the Beautiful pack. Guess Im adding that to one of my screens while the vibrate/silent setting is like this.

Couple of little things about 2.2 that I thought were strange.

What happened to the "Places" app that seemed to just be added a week or two ago?

My media dock is hooked up through my computer, i use it to charge the phone. The new USB Mass Storage screen that come up everytime I put it in the dock is starting to get annoying.

Otherwise I'm really happy with the update.

If you want to prevent it from auto opening the mount screen turn on USB Debugging, this is how i got around that, there may be another way I haven't found yet tho.

Setting > Applications > Development > USB Debugging

Ahhh, that is why I don't see mine anymore.

If you are referring to the silent/vibrate functionality, either way you slice it has changed.

yup - for the worse, in my opinion, but I have gotten used to it now.

Some quirks I've noticed so far:

-When doing a voice dictation text message to a fellow VZW Droid user, if the message is long enough to be split up into 2 separate messages, it gives me an error message bounceback about the user not being configured for MMS. This worked flawlessly yesterday to the same person using the same method.

-Battery life actually seems worse for me than before! I took it off the charger early this morning, gave it a full charge during lunch (got it up to 90% or so), then installed the update around 4:00 pm EST. Got home 20 mins ago and was already getting a low battery warning at 10%. This is with maybe 30 mins of voice usage (10 of it via BT speakerphone) and a few mins of web browsing and picture taking/viewing. Does the OS update flashing process take up that much battery power?

-The nice colorful sunset image is gone from the dock mode and is replaced by the regular wallpaper background. The temperate also seems a bit smaller & harder to read when in dock mode.

-As already noted, the loss of silent + vibrate only kinda sucks but I am sure this will be resolved by the community in no time.

-The new messaging app is indeed harder to read.

-App storage on microSD card is nice but I've been doing that since 2001 on Palm OS. I only had one or two apps that would let me move 'em to external storage. I was hoping to free up more internal storage by moving all my games & big apps over.

-Occasionally the accelerometer will get hung up and I'll have to open the slider then close it to get everything working properly.

The positives I've noticed:

-Browser is a bit faster at rendering complex websites (desktop formatting)
-Call quality seems a bit crisper than before
-Flash (obviously)
-5 homescreens are awesome and the lag switching between them is gone. Still some lag when in the phone app, however.
-Gallery is MUCH faster than before but zooming seems a bit wonky. I have had several images pop back to their zoomed out view when trying to pinch to zoom in to see details.
-Camera is a bit faster to focus and the camera app's onscreen controls are sooo much easier to use. Big improvement here.

So I have figured out a temporary but decent fix to having a vibrate only mode. Turn it to silent and go to the sound settings and check vibrate always aNd it will vibrate on silent mode. Also go into your email settings in the email app and set vibrate to always. You can also set it on both to vibrate while in silent mode!

Is it just me or are there a lot of apps opening on Froyo for no reason at all. I mean I'm having 15 or 16 apps open at one time for no reason at all. Is anyone else noticing this?

Umm, read my post here about this issue: http://androidforums.com/roms-droid...rf84b-clean-untouched-virgin.html#post1055830

Care to be more specific?

my phone is noticeably slower switching screens.

anyone try chrome to phone yet?

Give it some time - it may need some time to get everything synchronized and such - my best advice is to leave i alone, go to bed, and in the morning power cycle it - and then see what happens.

Chrome to phone works on BB 0.4 so it surely should on the OTA official release

Yes, that is a very slick! If you are like me, you will use it here and there at first. Then once it becomes second nature, you use it for all kinds of things. Whether you are browsing for wallpapers, reading news articles, or in my case, constantly sending new ROM/Theme files to my phone, you will find a variety of everyday uses for it!

It is a really smart feature!

actually i updated it 8 hours ago and rebooted the phone, maybe itll take a little longer

yea i used it once already

My impressions at first was, it is pretty polished, but seriously no flash on the market!?
Oh and that's not the only thing not showing up for me, about 1/4 of my apps from the market are mia! What's up with that? Oh, and on an ota update, that means that I can't go flash the froyo market fix that I used on rooted roms. I think someone already said it, but it may just be that the market needs updated. But still, its b.s.! So, tomorrow I'm gonna flash back and reroot and flash a rooted froyo rom back on..

Like UBR said, you'll start using it more - if you really want to. But it works perfectly fine since the last update - and Send to Phone for Firefox also works well with C2P

OK, Flash is still in beta. See http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid/106331-so-where-can-i-get-official-flash-player.html

As for other missing apps, when I first went ot a FroYo leak, I had a similar issue -0 the next day when I was all set to complain about it - they were there.

Try waiting ~24 hours and seeing if they are still missing....

i wonder when stevie will call c2p porn to phone

just tried it again for g maps, works great!

how do we use it for an app?

5 things I have noticed, not sure if they can be fixed or are just bugs.

1. Motion sensor seems to be very slow. When I hold the phone sideways it is ok, but when i move it back upright i have a hard time getting the screen to rotate back to being upright too. Have to sorta shake it around.

2. I use the charging dock. The phone just displays the time now when on the dock, and it is some green color and kinda hard to see. Is there a way to get back to the old dock screen? This one seems like a screen saver almost.

3. Where did the 4 quick launch icons go at the bottom of the screen that stayed there no matter which homepage you were on?? They get rid of those??

4. A few of the apps that were on my homepage now say "App not installed" when I try to open it.

5. Battery life SUUUUUUUUUCKS. I had it fully charged and literally in an hour it was RED and almost dead. I charged it up, used it for 20 mins, and it was down to 80%!

One thing I would mention is that the first time most of us put the first froyo leak on our phones...the phone took forever to "break-in". Nothing ever took as long as that first break in period and I think it was about 1-2 full days before things started speeding up. I remember thinking Froyo is slow...but then after a while...it was like a light switch turned on and the phone started flying much faster. Hope that helps...give it some time.

lots of good improvements with froyo... but they still couldnt change the call id pic size/resolution? i just dont get it. lol
