Hmm.

Having read all the comments above... I guess I will have to spend the day pressing 'Check now' for system software updates... just in case, you know.

:)

no update nothing.... its pure hell out there... both htc n google cheated us.... for the nth time :) when will these people understand about customer loyalty or rather its better to say when will they understand the value of keeping ones words..

I wouldn't go that far.

Go over to engadget and read the article on FroYo not being released for the Nexus yet. It's rather pathetic really.

"here: look what your Android phone can do! (in theory)"

Settings- About phone- System software updates- Check now.............
AHH FAIL!!! :-(

They couldn't have picked a worse time to mess up either.

It's going to take some pretty serious PR to get them out of this.

My phone keeps saying phone out of memory, i have deleted so many apps and still it gives me notifications . My contacts take about 80mb and googlemaps about 7mb with updates inc. The rest are about 1mb or under mb

same here, I need 2.2 now!

As I understand it, no-one officially beyond a HTC employee in a email conversation reported over on XDA Developers that there would be an update today. Or have they?

I was under the impression anyone setting their heart on a update TODAY was going to be sorely disappointed.

I know there will be a few posts up soon about waiting in line and being patient.

I understand that sentiment - but on the other hand I/O was a while ago now, and still no official FroYo? It's pretty easy to get up on stage and get everyone excited about new features, but they at least have to exist for you to remain credible.
I also understand that they DID have a section on 'upcoming' improvements, but at the moment, it's looking like my Christmas prediction of FroYo on the Desire may not have been such a facetious remark.

It's this kind of shit that's making Android look amateurish.

How much more official does it have to be?

Being disappointed is all part of owning an HTC device. Thankfully, I have no hardware issues on my Desire (unlike Nexus owners and EVO owners)

At least if it's released officially, someone will be able to cook a custom rom. I'm not beyond rooting my device at all - and I'm really looking forward to Android music later on this year.
Their PR is a disaster though.

I think if Google were a little less cocky at I/O, I would have been more patient - but they came out swinging, and have been floored for the time being.

So it's not official that the update will be here on a certain date - but it IS official that they had the wrong end of the stick?

I was never assuming that the update would be arriving on the 23rd - as I clearly stated: "If froyo is on the Desire by official means on the 23rd, I'll eat my own shit"

I'd be happy to have that.

I'm just getting riled as I can see the same theme unfolding before me as I had with the Hero.
HTC will be working on their next device now. Understandably, for them it's all about selling handsets, and they know that the Android community will stump up. Is the Hero a year old yet?

"open" has many benefits - but accountability and quality control are not among them.

To complaints about why did they feel the need to shout so loud at I/O just to get the fanboys excited.

Rule 1: never over-promise and under-deliver.

what have they over-promised? as far as i'm aware they've released information about the upcoming update, no official release date has ever been mentioned. correct me if i'm wrong.

hey ive got my 2.2 update (NAAAAAATTTTT.....) hehe sorry guys just feel sorry for all of us who believed this rummor from Xda. but still we have nice sunny day here in uk on 23 June so ill rather enjoy it than think about any Froyo updates being pushed at least till December :)
so guys and girls enjoy this sunny day and let's not think about this update as there was no credible source (apart from member email) that this update will come out today and enjoy the weather and reviews of apple 4g hehe. (looks good btw 512Ram, 1ghz proc)

Without being pedantic, I'm sure you understand my point.

What's the benefit in dangling features and updates in front of the world if you're not anywhere near releasing it? Headline grabbing? Who knows?

Would you take that from any other company? If apple did that you'd be reaching for the pitchforks. Lets have a little parity here.
It seems that the left arm doesn't know what the right arms is up to half the time.

We talking about the England football team ? :)

Cant see the issue, no official date on the release. Just the ramblings of a engineer trying to fob off a complaint.

If HTC had officially said "Today is the day, go get your update" and then didnt deliver then there is cause for your argument. But that is not the case.
Its a shame as we all want the update but I guess we will just be waiting a little longer.

I could be wrong, but isnt that exactly what almost every other OS provider does? Showcase features of the upcoming OS to gain initial attraction before actually putting out any concrete release information?

Such as whom?

They usually have dates ready, or a date to announce the release date.

Since when are Android aiming to be "every other OS"?

i wasn't trying to imply they were, merely stating that it's pretty much standard practise for providers to shout about their products before giving official releases. Again, correct me if i'm wrong but Apple did this with the WWDC and Microsoft similarly with it's Windows Phone 7
