My Desire is rooted and I'm running a DeFrost ROM. Will I need to change something in order to get the OTA update? (I want Sense back.)

I.e. do I need to flash a stock unbranded ROM?

You need to install the HTC 2.1 ROM on the phone. But its very simple. Just download and install HTC Sync. Then download the correct 1.21 ROM for your phone on your PC and flash the phone via the USB cable.
It is a piece of piss, follow this video on the unlockr. It is idiot proof:

Or if you've still got your original NAND backup, just wipe and restore to that.............right?????

More of a question cos that's what I was gonna do.

I don't get it, why say its not imminent. sounds like 2.2 is already rolling on the Desire in China. The providers (all be it slowly) are gearing up for it. HTC seem to be saying its coming in the near future and there is even a pre-release 2.2 ROM from HTC floating around which has been modified by the ROM guys to be even more functional.

Seems a bit of an elaborate hoax if its going to be another 2-3 months. That said I will never see it without rooting.

I'm gonna love looking at this thread on monday ,
see how many people are saying " well, maybe next weekend, but its coming !!!!!"
now, how do i get gingerbread on my G1 ?.

In your link i dont see a rom for Orange UK users..... im gonna wait for a cooked rom of the official release, but was just wondering why Orange don't have one there......?

For those rooted, make sure you follow the steps in the attached link before installing the 2.2 update.

I'll be waiting for a custom ROM (of the official release).

I'll be waiting for a custom ROM as well. Shouldn't be to long going by what the guys on XDA are saying :D

Anyone who has rooted their phone should wait, with the custom ROM your phone will still be rooted after you do the update

You're not the same Jammy who did a web vid of you picking up your Xbox360 at launch are ya?

Anyway, how long do we think a modded ROM of the official HTC 2.2 will take to arrive then? How fast do the XDA guys usually work?

I'm pretty dumb when it comes to phones, but I have a t-mobile desire, can i just put on the plain htc desire rom without the branding easily? I don't want it unlocked or anything

I have an unbranded unlocked htc desire with the latest official 2.1 android installed. My phone is rooted but I havent installed any custom roms. Will I still get OTA or do I have to unroot my phone ?

Yes but you'll lose root, you'd be better waiting until a rooted version is put up on XDA.

I notice this is being reported in the mainstream (i.e. non-tech) press. The Telegraph are using Techradar as the source so it doesn't necessarily make it any truer, but it does mean a wider audience of people hoping/expecting an update soon. Let's hope HTC delivers.

I have a question after reading the xda "guilde" someone posted here.

While I understand why un-rooting and installing the OTA update will prevent you from rooting straight away, I was a little bit worried after reading the posters comment that "you may never be able to root again".

Why is this so? Isn't it correct to assume that people will find a way to root the Desires that have been 2.2-ed OTA (or sold with 2.2 for that matter)?

I don't mind loosing root for a while, but would hate to loose it permanently. I like 'official' versions for some reason (even now, I'm running AdamG's official HTC 2.2 ROM - a ROM closest to the original I could find) and would like to do OTA just to see how that goes (compare battery life, for example, as most custom ROMs fare poorly in that department). I also don't want any custom stuff added/removed/whatever. So - again - if I OTA now, why is it wrong to assume a new rooting method would arrive soon for 2.2 users (just as it came for the previous 1.21.405.2 update).

I think it will probably be rooted within days of it's release.

There will be a bit of a race to get the king of the rooters crown :D

I can't see it being a problem.

Well I have a branded Orange Desire. Whilst the branding doesn't bother me too much, the 2.2. update seems like the ideal time to move from the branded 2.1 ROM to a "virgin" HTC 2.2 one.

How difficult is this likely to be? Should I be looking to put a standard HTC 2.1 ROM on there and then allow the OTA update to download automatically? I'm also concerned about the lack of an Orange ROM should I need to send it back under warranty - is it possible to backup the original ROM and then revert to it if needed?

I'm the same, i have a branded orange desire, and whilst the apps they have on it do annoy me, i didnt want to mess the phone up (my luck) and potentially lose the 1 year warrenty, so i just left it.

Wont we get an update, or will it be a long time till we get the 2.2.
