We're only tiddy I'm afraid. The UK doesn't represent all that much marketshare, and certainly not much mindshare.

I'm really unsure what to do. Desire (would need rooting and fiddling with), or Nexus (more expensive, not as well supported but with better upgrade schedule)

I asked a similar question about my Hero last year but I have just bought a Desire today so I will ask again. I bought an Orange branded Desire from a chap who did not want his upgrade. How will the Desire know there is an update waiting for it when the time comes? Does the network know that I have an Orange branded Desire with an outdated firmware and therefore push an update OTA?
 
I saw hundreds of these kinds of transcripts last year around November/December relating to the Hero.

PLEASE don't get your hopes up. I will be happy if I am wrong, but take it from someone who's been here before.

The timing would be quite intelligent though. If Apple announce the new hardware at WWDC (7th June), this will grab headlines that will probably be being enjoyed by the Evo launch on the 4th. people will be going crazy over that thing!
They will (if history tells us anything) release the handset at the middle/back end of the month. Now, if HTC roll out froyo at a similar time, it'll really capture the headlines AND dilute some of the apple buzz.

Speaking as a UK resident, Android still doesn't count for much over here. If you take a walk around London, Manchester, Birmingham etc, it's all iPhone and very little in the way of Android. In the US, Motorolla kicked the marketing in the goolies, but HTC need a story like this to woo a few mainstream followers.
Hopefully, more users will mean more apps of an acceptable quality. I'm reading that apple devs are leaving in droves due to the stringent controls - IF this is true (and I'm not sure it is) - then we should start seeing decent games at last. Android desperately needs an injection of "cool" to make it a more aspirational product rather than the 'nerd's choice'.

Same goes for London, if you see a android phone there its usual A) Business people or B) People that buy the most expensive phone, just show off. Like in Uni there most people would disregard android and just talk about iPhone as the best phone out there.

So we do need a phone that can have the same "funky" feel to it before Android is cleared in name for the mainstream masses. Though I do see more and more people with Android in Norway. Like most of my friends got Android friends, so its getting there.

We just need more phones like HTC Hero that can swing up the sales of the android phone, which it did when it first came. :)

You're right. But there's a catch...Desire is NexusOne's step-twin brother :) (hardware wise)
Even if HTC fails to live up to our expectations (and they usually do) I'm pretty sure there will be at least one community ROM based on Nexus 2.2 ROM (without the SENSE of course but at least is something).
 
As I said, I hope you're right.

I'm having a really tough time deciding between the two!

I'm not really a fan of sense, but am I also right in thinking the Desire has better audio? for headphones that is...
 
From what I'm reading, HTC only received builds of FroYo over the weekend (or around I/O at the earliest).

That story popped up on xda at the weekend, which means the guy was most likely talking to HTC on Friday... Does anybody really believe that within hours of receiving the software, they had set a release date and communicated that with their customer services reps?

If it is 23rd June it will be a great birthday present for me - only problem is I will be on a cruise ship in the middle of the North Sea on that day. :( :D
 
I guess you people have herd about the guy who asked HTC when he would get apps2sd and he was told 27th of June......... Or something like that! :D
If thats true then I'm cool with it......
Its a lot better service than what Hero users got!

T-Mobile and Phones4U are advertising the Desire pretty heavily here in the UK, so at least they're giving it a push. But it is more a slant of "look at this great new phone" rather than the OS aspect sadly.

All the networks, CPW and P4U are heavily advertising and pushing Android devices. A couple reference Android specifically and some are just advertising specific devices.
All in all Androids presence on the high street is extremely prominent.
 
There's a big push by android phone manufacturers and google to take a fair chunk of the market, it makes sense if they try and roll out the updates asap. Whether that happens is another matter.

The new HTC handset will be all about HD, so latest android version shouldn't have to be its (unique) selling point.

I doubt it, HTC's official response is:

We are working closely with Google and our other partners to ensure we have the earliest access to everything we need to provide a complete and solid HTC Sense experience on Froyo. We expect to release all updates in the second half of this year but can't be more specific yet.

Yeah that's their 'official' response but that rumour got out that they are going for June.. So everyone is hanging on to that hope. I'm not sure how much longer I can take these low memory warnings! Even so I hear applications need to be tweaked (not re-written?) to work with Android 2.2 so the delay from that perspective is not a bad thing and should allow some applications to catch up.
 
It's a really tough sell to be honest.

The average Joe is attracted to the handset, or brand. For example; I went into an O2 shop a while ago asking about the Desire. They said they didn't have any, but they DID have the HTC Smart ???????

Silly handset to try to switch me to. Lack of education on the part of the staff? Do they focus on "Desire", "HTC", or "Android"

The "Droid" brand worked really well in the US because it added an element of "cool". Guys love gadgets too, so the Droid/milestone really spoke to that sector. I have a strange feeling that the iPhone is just swaying towards the female market just a bit - just a feeling.
