what u can expect frm android 2.2:

Performance
Screen lock additional feature
Making ur phone Wifi hot spot
Flash support
camera enhancement

we can hope abt something else added by HTC may be some additional feature to our SenseUI....(this is purely my idea) :)

HTC better not take long on this. It has the same hardware as the Nexus One.

Rumour mill seems to be saying that it's second half of 2010 for 2.2 on existing devices (or at least existing devices launched in 2010 - devices launched prior to 2010 are not confirmed) so that would make me think around September. Add on another couple of months for the networks to fiddle, and I reckon I might see 2.2 on my T-Mobile Desire shortly before Christmas.

Need to get the Nexus One rom on this thing.

T-Mobile released the last OTA upgrade a few days after HTC released it. OK, so the last upgrade wasn't an OS upgrade, but hopefully the networks will be as quick with 2.2.

Is 2.2 the unification point where firmware will come from Google, and the user overlay (sense) will come OTA from HTC/operator?

Or is that not until Gingerbread?

What about the NexusOne 2.2 Update, is it not possible to use this for the HTC Desire? Or isnt there any "ROM" to use with 2.2 without rooting the Desire? Cant be true that we have to wair some months more than nexusone owners, thats stupid imho.

i would like to know that too. hope some one releases a n1 rom for desire or htc do the 2.2 soon i could do with moving the apps to sd

No, it's not possible to use it for the Desire.

No, there is not currently any 2.2 rom available for the Desire (with or without rooting).

Yes, we are going to have to wait.

From what we've been hearing over the last few days, you're not going to see an update from HTC for at least several weeks. Probably even a few months.

The Evo will almost certainly get it first. And since the new iPhone will shortly be competing directly against the Evo, I'm sure they'll be working to get 2.2 ported asap.

If we're lucky, the Evo version won't require much modification to work on the Desire. The hardware isn't all that different anyway.

I think I saw Paul O'Brien from Modaco tweeting something about porting 2.2 to the Desire next week, maybe that's what Lekky is talking about above.

You will need to root your phone to use any custom rom that he releases (if he releases one), and it won't have the HTC Sense UI or the HTC widgets like FriendStream etc.

And if you're about to ask 'how do I root my phone'... mosey on over to the modaco Desire forums for a guide. But tbh I'd just wait and see what happens over the next few weeks before doing anything drastic.

HTC owners are certainly optimistic about getting updates, despite so many previous models not getting them for ages (or ever).

Yeah and I'm getting the standard script monkey responses too. I was hoping for better from HTC but it seems people were right. I was warned about HTC's reputation for slow updates before I got the Desire.

If there was any device comparable to the Desire when I was looking for a new phone, I would not have gone with HTC because of their poor reputation with updates.

Good as Sense is, I do think HTC uses this as an excuse too often. They seem to claim that it is tightly interwoven with the operating system itself, but I don't think it is quite as much as they claim.

We have a replacement home screen, a series of apps and widgets. It has a slightly different colour scheme, replacement keyboard and other things that Android happily lets you change (hence the third party apps that do much of what Sense does).

So, to me, Sense being modified to work with 2.1, 2.2 or whatever is a red herring. The problem is that everybody believes it and spreads the word and HTC does nothing to correct them (why would they?).

I'd love for someone (ideally from HTC) to come on and, even if it's anonymously, explain why Sense is so unique that it can delay - or even prevent - future OS updates.

I'd also like to ask the same question to Sony Ericsson for their similar excuse for delaying 2.1 on the X10. I hope to God that they're now going to skip to 2.2!!

In the future, given the range of third party apps (home screen, gallery, web browser, keyboard etc), I'd probably look to a manufacturer that keeps the phone as 'vanilla' as possible so we don't get stuck with old software because of the non-standard stuff. I wonder if Sense could actually be the undoing of HTC as and when loads of other manufacturers start making equally impressive Android devices (hardware/screen wise).

This time last year, I was salivating over the HTC Hero.
It was the new messiah, in the same way that the Desire is now. It was an iPhone killer, as the Desire is said to be now.

I am taking a leap of faith back into Android. The Desire is cheaper, and better supported - but the Nexus gets those updates quicker.

I'm totally flummoxed.

psh, iPhone killer. The desire is the best phone on the market right now doesn't matter if it kills the iPhone or not, it is still the best.

anyway didn't mean to divert, yeah earlier i mean that next week we should get a rooted update to froyo.

Just saying; I've been here before. This time last year!

I think nexus may be the boy for me. I'm not laying out 400 quid for a phone that I have to piss around with to this degree.

Chill out. It was only launched on Thursday and the N1 hasn't even had a full release yet.

I think it's understandable that they're being a little bit cagey about the details... even HTC have admitted that the Hero situation was a bit of a fiasco, and they took a lot of flak for it.

They're currently answering questions about 2.2 for desire with an FAQ that includes the line "It took much longer than you claimed to release the

I think it was Gina on This week in google (podcast), said that was one of the bullet points on the roadmap for gingerbread.

when 2.2 hits will this mean an upgrade of OS leaving all apps intact or will i need to download and reinstall everything?
