App installation on external storage media

The Android platform now allows applications to request installation onto the device's external storage media (such as the SD card), as an alternative to installation onto the device's internal memory.
Application developers can express the preferred installation location for their applications by means of a new attribute of <manifest> in the manifest file, android:installLocation. The attribute supports three values: "internalOnly", "preferExternal", and "auto". At install time, the system checks the value of android:installLocation and installs the application .apk according to the preferred location, if possible. If the application has requested external installation, the system installs it into a private, encrypted partition in the external media. Once an application .apk is installed externally, the system lets the user change the storage location of the .apk and move it onto the device's internal memory if needed (and vice versa), through Manage Applications in the user settings.
By default, the system installs all applications onto the device's internal memory, except for those that explicitly request external installation. This means that the system will always install legacy applications onto internal memory, since they do not have access to the android:installLocation attribute. However, it is possible to configure and compile a legacy application such that it is installed internally on older versions of the platform and externally on Android 2.2 and later platforms, if necessary.
Note that requesting installation onto the device's external media is not suitable for all applications, particularly because the external media may be removable and unmounting/remounting may disrupt the user experience and system settings.

where is this 2.2 information coming from? is it confirmed by google or is someone tweeting it saying that this is what they heard by attending google IO?

if the latter, where can we check for a confirmation by google?

The owner of the site tweeted that as the news was being rolled out. You can watch the Youtube video to confirm :)

Not sure if we allow embedding of youtube videos on this forum so link to official 2.2 video. Someone can embed it later if it is allowed. Um never mind it did it anyway............ *tumbleweed*

No sweat, it's allowed :)

That looks pretty sweet. Like the send to phone feature although I wonder how much access to your information that Google will have because of it. Apps2SD will be a life saver. Just a waiting game now. I've flashed my Orange ROM with the generic one, so will that lead to a slightly quicker update when (or if) HTC get round to porting a version of 2.2?

including the Desire...

if your phone was launched this year, we will most likely offer an upgrade for it to the Froyo version. This includes popular models like the Desire and Droid Incredible as well as hotly anticipated phones like the Evo 4G, MyTouch slide and upcoming models. We will announce a full list of phones and dates once we are closer to launching the upgrades.

Not good enough!

hmmm so does this mean we don't have 100% apps2sd?

Let me give you an example.

Say I update to 2.2. The developers must then go back and then enable switching to SD card on their app, otherwise by default it will be unmovable from the internal memory? Or is 2.2 written so that devs don't have to do this?

I appreciate that a handful of apps MUST be installed to the internal memory, but say for example a few apps which would otherwise have no issue in being installed to the SD card have their developers just not care about the app anymore. Then are we stuck with the app on the internal because the dev never went back and made it SD installable?

The June rumour is gathering pace. Nexus One and Droid will be the first to get it, apparently, could be two weeks from now. Still hoping it will be earlier than that, though

see my other thread for Desire info. Second half of 2010 is the word from HTC.

It should be on the nexus one first, until they don't get it, we won't have it I guess. pop into the N1 forum n see what they saying. I am following it with attention.

haha, that's what I do :D...well the Desire forum that is ;) There's more traffic in here than the Nexus forum, lol.

I dont think this was posted here in this thread yet:

We will announce a full list of phones and dates once we are closer to launching the upgrades. We are working closely with Google and our other partners to ensure we have the earliest access to everything we need to provide a complete and solid Sense experience on Froyo. We expect to release all updates in the second half of this year but can't be more specific yet.

That's what its named after. Versions of Android were codenamed after pastries. For some reason they moved to general foodstuffs.

On topic, I remember when 1.6 was going to get released "in a few months" on Hero and look what happened there. I'm really really hoping HTC has got off its arse and learned a few lessons as they are on their last chance with me.

So we will be able to get it on the Desire as soon as it's out? :D

edit: Wtf, I'd have to consider a different brand if HTC keep up with this slow releasing bs.
