No, you won't be able to update a modified ROM.

Google's I/O conference is tomorrow though, so at least wait until Thursday before doing anything drastic ;)

So I'd have to flash it back to the stock ROM then. Ok thanks, looks like I'll wait a few days, not bothered about root access I only really want Apps2SD (be nice to get rid of the t-Mobile branding and bloatware as well though!)

Thanks for your help

Could be HTC have held of on updating the Hero to 2.1, because of the speed improvements due in 2.2, HTC could be super quick with the updates, but if operators drag there feet updating there firmware then.....

Again I don't think we will see HTC release an official version of froyo on the desire for months. Here is my reasoning: releasing froyo on the EVO, incredible or desire is roughly the same amount of development work and we know the EVO will be released one month from now with 2.1. If it meant releasing the EVO a month later so it would ship with froyo I think HTC would do that. On the marketing front I think it makes sense. Doubt HTC would release the EVO or incredible and then update the OS one or two months later if it could all be done in one go. I really hope I am wrong but I don't think froyo is round the corner for HTC

2.2 is still only a pretty minor update though isn't it. Doesn't seem to warrant the "best at the last" sort of tag.

Well from the rumors circulating online, it's not 'minor'...and it's what a lot of people are anticipating for the Google I/O. Well I don' want it to have the 'best for last' tag either :/ it means we won't know what Froyo really hold until the end of day tomorrow

Was anybody watching the Google IO feed today when the guy was showing the webpage with the motorcycles on, I think it was to do with HTML5 ?

As the guy did his finishing piece, almost as he was walking off stage he said something along the lines of "and we will have some exciting news with handsets and flash tomorrow"

If its on you tube I'll try and find it later when the missus gets off the laptop as I'm writing this from my Blackberry !

He 100% mentioned something along those lines though, hope I'm not reading too much into it !

Ive found the clip on you tube:

YouTube - Google I/O 2010 Keynote, pt. 5

Listen to the 15 or so seconds from 3:00mins in :)

Hope im not getting my wires crossed !

Most of the talk here is about how long it will take HTC to update 2.1 to 2.2 but surely then it also has to go through the networks? Those of us that have phones from the network have to get our updates through them, don't we? So not only are we waiting for HTC but we then also have to hope that the networks decide to issue the update.

Could be the end of the year knowing T-Mobile UK.

Yep, you guys will have another long wait ahead while they test it on their network and put their own shitty software on it.

I was lucky, my network rushed it out to meet demand so it has the stock HTC software on it, and isn't even locked.

You can always install a standard HTC rom though and then update it yourself.

Don't think this is true as you can search for updates in your settings.

Hi all, great forum. :)

I'm as excited as everyone else about the update so I just registered to drop this into the conversation:

This way, just because Google rolls out an awesome new browser doesn't mean you need to wait for HTC, Samsung, or whomever made your phone to roll it into a firmware update, and for your carrier to approve it -- almost all of the juicy user-facing stuff will happen through the Market.

From Engadget.

So I have a desire, but bought it sim-free from an IT supplier, not through any of the networks in the UK. Will I still receive the update automatically via HTC OTA?

If the updates come from the phone manufacturer (HTC in this case) rather than your operator then I would imagine you'll get it like everyone else. If they come from your operator then I would imagine that whoever you bought the SIM from will update your phone. I'm sure someone here with more knowledge will correct me if I'm wrong.

However, looking at the Engadget link in the post above yours I believe updates will be broken down into individual apps and be available through Market in future, rather than having to wait for an OTA update from your operator or manufacturer.
