To be fair to Nokia (as a long term Nokia/Symbian user who only recently migrated to the Android and the Desire) I've always found them to be pretty good at putting out firmware updates, both incremental fixes and bigger functionality improving ones. Of late they've definitely had problems with releasing initially unready, buggy firmware, but have pretty reliably issued updates trying to rectify things. They've even issued updates to the N95 (a phone that's now quite a few years old, running 2 generations of OS behind) in the last 6 months. I've typically had at least 2-3 updates available for each of the Nokia phones I've had in the past 7-8 years.

Nokia are good with updates, sometimes introducing new apps and things like that (and they did introduce UI improvements on the S60v5 stuff) but I am not sure that - bar the Internet Tablets - they've ever actually upgraded the OS. If it was Symbian 9.x, have they ever actually updated this? It's easy to get confused with the OS and the UI, which could almost be likened to something like HTC Sense.

Nokia is no different to the other companies that now sit back and rely on the OTA updating feature, so they can issue a buggy phone and then allow updates to fix it over time. In some cases, major bugs aren't ironed out for 6-12 months! How ridiculous is that? People have changed phone by the time the phone works as advertised.

It's an even bigger problem for apps now. I am updating some apps (and not beta ones) on a weekly basis. Can anyone remember a time when something would be made as stable as possible before being released? Maybe they were all in fact bugged and simply never fixed, but I am not so sure it was ever as bad as it can be now. Still, blame Google for getting people to accept the use of alpha and beta software/services!

I would think that the Froyo updates for HTC phones that have the Snapdragon processor would be released close to each other. The only differences between these phones seem to be differing amounts of RAM and different cameras. Please correct me if I'm wrong though.

I'm happy as long as the update actually comes this year, mostly waiting it for the flash 10.1 support. It would be completely ridiculous if HTC wouldn't update the Desire after they've said they would, certainly wouldn't buy another one of their phones, or recommend anyone to buy one.

Slightly off-topic, how often do you people buy a new phone? I've already seen many comments from people who have bought an iPhone, then Desire or another HTC phone and are saying they'll probably buy a new one next year. I'm hoping to actually use this phone for 2-3 years, very happy with it so far.

Dude, the APK for Flashplayer 10.1 for Eclair (Android 2.1) on HTCs Desire is already out. Thanks to some Developer on xda. You need to have the stock Firmware running, it basicly relies on Sense.

Brave soul I am, I installed it and tried backyard monsters on facebook. It ran slowly, didnt render properly and had lots of white squares. Ghost Trappers ran fine, uninstalled it now, the player not facebook. :D

So it seems to work, if my phone is now a time bomb of virus and hacks I do not know but I can always factory reset it again..

I recently bought the HTC Desire instead of waiting for the iPhone 4. I own an iPod Touch 2nd Gen, but I wanted to try something new, hence the purchase of the HTC Desire. I bought the phone for approximately $700 without any contract, deal, provider etc.

I am some what disappointed of the HTC Desire. As an iPod Touch user, I am used to a lot of games and applications (running smoothly) on my device. Now, on the HTC Desire, the majority of the games are, in fact, laggy. And in addition to this, there's only 50-100 mb worth of installing games and applications on. I've only installed like 10 games/applications, and I'm already out of space.

I now regret my purchase of the HTC Desire, and wish I would have bought the iPhone 4 instead. But as I am only sixteen-years old, I can't afford buying another phone now. I am now stuck with the HTC Desire for 2-3 years.

......and this relates to the topic "Official Android 2.2 Discussion" in what way?

Sorry to hear you were so disappointed. I used to own iPhone 3G. Most of the games I remember that were any good in iphone - I had to pay for. Android does have loads of free ones to chose from so the quality is not the same. Froyo (update to which is being discussed on this thread) is promised to be lot quicker. It will also solve your space problem. But do not expect it sometime soon. It looks like you plan to have the phone for 2-3 years so I think if you are lucky you will have Froyo for at least 2 years (presuming you get the update in a years time).

Or like me you can just save up for a year and buy iphone 5 which I am told will have 4G as well as proper multitasking and full folder function which I love about Android. Or I am sure you will also be able to chose from some really good Android 2.2 phone. I bet you HTC will have loads of Froyo phones out before we get our Desire upgraded.

If you regret it that much, sell your HTC Desire on E-bay/Craiglist and use that money to buy the iPhone 4.

EVO CRUSHES IPHONE. i don't recall any article EVER suggesting you could replace the iphone with the one you chose. sorry, but buyer beware.

if it hasn't been 30 days since you got it, i'd choose something else.

I have no idea what you are talking about! Who said anything about replacing iPhone? I am just saying in a year there will be lots of goods phones to chose from.

I agree with you that evo seems better than iPhone 4. But I was talking about iPhone 5 due for release next June.

If anyone gone confused by the randomness of my statement before edit - it was due to our beloved predictive text function of Desire.

You're a 16 year old with all of these gadges... and were able to toss down $700 for a desire... seriously?

Clearly, mummy and daddy love their kid with money ;)

When I was a youngster, I was stoked to get a lego set. Ah how times have changed.

We've obviously still got to wait for HTC but at least we know its firmly on their shoulders and not googles
Yeah they need to add the Sense stuff. Two separate emails from HTC staff. One was a generic email saying please check twitter feeds etc.
The other said "At this time im afraid that we do not have any information on this update. however please keep checking the website for more details on this as to when we get them. once we have information on this update we upload the details to the website www.htc.com for all to see. I trust that this resolves your query, please do not hesitate to contact us again if required. Thank you for contacting HTC."

old saying ' theres no pleasing some people' and u are one of them

No you're not. You said you paid $700 to get it SIM-free, unlocked, so you can sell it tomorrow and use that money for something else.

Why are stuck with it for 2-3 years?

How did you get the $700 in the first place? By selling other stuff? So, sell this too!

This story was taken from another website that said:

With the Nexus One getting its update on, we'd hope that HTC isn't too far behind - although with HTC Sense to contend with, a slight delay is to be expected. A spokesman for HTC told us, “We are working hard with our partners to update the HTC Sense experience on Froyo and distribute it to our customers as fast as possible. We expect to release updates for several of our 2010 models including Desire, Legend and Wildfire beginning in Q3.”

So that site hopes HTC isn't too far behind. An unnamed spokesperson then said 'we expect to release updates...'

Given how this is spreading via Twitter as fact and being posted as a 'via ..' story on loads of blogs - and yet I've not yet heard a thing from HTC in the form of a press release (as happened with the Hero), I am still not convinced that this is any more factual than previous stories that said we'd have 2.2 by the middle of last week!

It does sound plausible, of course, but so would a statement from me saying that I am sure that by this time next year, HTC will launched a new collection of phones.

Not only did the unnamed spokesman say 'we expect to .......' he also said 'beginning in Q3'. Possibly not all of them in Q3 then, although I would expect the Desire to be the first as their top handset.

Who knows.....'beginning in Q3' could mean they start work on them in Q3 which is a couple of days away.

As usual its a pretty vague statement from a not hugely official source that we're all hanging onto. Me as much as anyone :D
