Ask anyone in the street have you heard of the iPhone and you will get 99% of people saying yes. Do the same for Android and you will be lucky if you get 10%.

Apple don't sell their products based on technology or a good OS, they sell it on brand image - something that Android can simply not compete with. But then again, it doesn't have to, as it is slowly sneaking into almost all new smart phones... same as Windows did back in the 1980s...
 
wont version 3 be out before this release? I want to put more apps on my device and don't want to root it (yet if I dont have to!).

Well, they'll have a few more pops at the competition, the nerds will cackle, and then the trailblazing Nexus one owners will pick up the update around Jan - Feb. By this time, HTC will have teased us with a few tweets etc, but will basically be working on the next big thing and won't have time to mess around with FroYo on the Desire.
They'll know that (just as with the Hero) hardcore android users will just pony up for the next handset release.

Walked past a Carphone Warehouse recently? They are plugging the hell out of Android! Problem is, it's just not an aspirational product.
Retail is trying - really hard. They are selling 'android' rather than the handset - which is great.
When was the last time you heard someone walk into a highstreet store and ask for a symbian device? Never - they ask for a Nokia (or whatever).
At least Android is getting the opportunity - it's in Google/Moto/Samsung/HTCs court now. Oh and the developer's court too!

We need better apps to make this platform a real winner. We also need to get used to paying for them!!!!!!!!!!
 
Paul from Modaco has got a near perfect Froyo rom on Desire that he's getting paid members to test out over there. Shouldn't be long till he updates a pre-baked rom for all us other folk.
 
I think they're deliberately holding back the full potential of the Desire so that once other new phones are released, (i.e iPhone 4G) they can then implement these updates such as HD Recording, full flash and DivX support to show the Desire has more to offer.

That would be silly, they are better off doing it before.
 
Again, it's a drone releasing information that they have no right releasing.

Carry on with the thread and you'll see the clarification from HTC - which is characteristically vague.

Really? Do you think they want you to update your phone? OR do you think they are beavering away creating the next handset with all those features loaded as standard?

HTC are no better than any of the other big tech companies: they want your cash.
 
I'd have to agree. There is no direct competition to the iPhone at the moment. If there ever will be. Apple have created a lifestyle, almost, choosing an Apple product is as much as a style choice as it is a product choice. No phone HTC release now or in the next year are going to create anything near that.

We are members on a forum about smartphones. The average public does not buy their iphone and head to the forums to learn about them, they just use them.
 
I've said all along that if Android could produce a more solid and complete base to work from, while keeping the unlimited customisation options, then I can't see another OS touching it.

By more solid and complete I am referring to less bugs and less bizarre omissions eg. the lack of a file manager on a device like the Desire.

Although as Trick has mentioned in another thread, bugs and strange things happening is what you get when the OS is in a constant, beta-like state.

It's horses for courses. If Android worked 100%, and was flawless, most of the users on here would be bored and move onto something else! ;)

Apple have the marketing advantage as they only need to promote one message: Apple iPhone. Well, what I mean is, it's easier for them.
Android has: Android, Droid, HTC, Moto, Sense, Google, Xperia, etc etc and none of it joins up that easily.
As I have said for over a year now: You could not replace every iPhone with an Android device and expect people to hit the ground running. It's not finished yet, and while everything DOES work together, it often doesn't seem like it should.....apps don't integrate well (as they are open source with common themes or standards).

I hope FroYo comes out within two weeks - but I'll stand by my offer: if it's available to me OTA from official sources on the 23rd, I'll eat my own shit.

That said, I really can't see it happening either. So I doubt you'll be eating anything too unsavoury!

I can't really understand why openhome, or any of the other brilliant launchers are not considered more by large companies.
ALL Android devices should be vanilla, with a launcher on top. You want more widgets? Download them. You want a different launcher? No problem.

Why Sense is such a leg-iron is beyond me. I know it does a lot more than the launchers - but is it really worth it for the update issues it causes?
We get that HTC, MOTO etc don't want to miss out on the branding opportunity, but seriously, you have logos on the devices guys....isn't that enough?
 
I like Sense so would prefer Sense UI over stock android.
Stock seems too old skool for me.
The Sense widgets are pretty cool.

And there are sooo many different dates going around that you need to be stupid in order to actually think any are true. Unless we hear a official announcement from HTC I am thinking we wont get it till end of the year.

I agree in principle, but I can see where HTC and Motorola are coming from with their proprietary software. Vanilla Android isn't suitable for the average Joe, so they have to do something to make it accessible to everybody and to give it a bit of gloss.

And on top of that, most of these companies are beginning to realise that the battle is being fought less on hardware than on user experience these days.

So they have to have some sort of USP, otherwise it's just another android phone with a bunch of specs that are meaningless to the average user. And of course, once they've got that USP, they have to make sure nobody else steals it, so offering up all their fancy widgets on the android market doesn't make good business sense for them.

It's an uncomfortable mix of old and new mobile market models tbh. Don't know if it's really sustainable.
 
I'm all for the gloss - especially with the budget they'd have to work with. My point is, why make it so intertwined with the OS that it takes forever to apply a simple firmware update?
 
Don't know.

The more integrated it is, the harder it is to pirate it though... note that nobody is offering separate sense widgets or apps anywhere on the web, despite a lot of demand for them.

But whether that's HTC's motive or just a side benefit, I couldn't say.
 
I'd put a decent user experience and update schedule above the need to prevent piracy. There's nothing to stop someone from replicating sense widgets right?
 
They can copy them, but they do so at their own risk. Beautiful Widgets were on the receiving end of a cease and desist order before Christmas after they blatantly ripped off the HTC clock/weather widget. Though there are still a few of their widgets that look quite similar to the HTC ones.

this is purely speculative, though. I have no idea what their motives are. Maybe the level of integration serves some purpose at system level... would be interested to know the answer myself.

HD recording is just something they can put on their spec list unless the camera is up to scratch, which I don't think the Desire's is.

The iPhone 4 can sell HD recording with pride because the camera is actually decent if Apple's shots are anything to go by (and they really are untouched!), but packing in extra pixels on already mediocre videos will not make them any better.
