Having read through the instructions for rooting the HTC Desire, it seems like an unbelievably complicated rigmarole with huge potential for a lot to go wrong, if not completely brick the phone. And at the end of the day, is it worth it if Android 2.2 will give us much of what the rooting is claimed to achieve. So what's the point? Just wait for the Froyo release by HTC ...

Currently Investigating... Sounds a bit like how long is a piece of string!

I got my HTC Desire yesterday - and whilst I love it compared to my Hero, I'm so disappointed that iPlayer or Dailymotion do not work with 2.1.

I am dying to get an OTA upgrade to 2.2 already and had my phone less than 24 hours!

Maybe it's a studpid question, but why does Froyo have to come OTA from HTC? Why is it that I can't just download it from some site and install it manually like I did with the latest firmware update (1.15 -> 1.21)? I've got an unlocked, unbranded Desire, what would be the problem?

Technically HTC CAN have the Froyo on its site for you to download and install manually. It just depends on if they want to or not. Not sure how HTC rolls...like does it release its update to unbranded/unlock phones first than to the carrier phones since it'll have to make changes specified by the carrier if they requested it.

Would it have to be from a HTC site? I'm not into all the technical details here but I was just wondering: why is it that I just can't download Froyo from a developer site, install it and perhaps afterwards put the HTC sense UI on top of it all?

Me either, but from what I've gathered, that's sadly not how it works :( Sense is integrated into the Android OS (technically it shouldn't be...but that's the explanation to the reason why the 2.1 update was so slow for the other HTC phones). If you want Froyo from XDA, you'd need to root your phone.

i don't think it's possible as Sense UI is not application (.apk) which you could just extract from the android firmware and put it anywhere you want. i think Sense UI is interrelated with the firmware itself and can't come separately (drivers, customisations, applications, etc. of Sense UI compared to stock Android). But it would be a good question to developers at XDA or Modaco as they are "cooking" custom Roms, thus, are able to extract the whole firmware and reapply it on different device or rewrite drivers, etc.
however, i might be wrong so correct me if i am. :)

huh Rose you were about 3 minutes faster (maybe due to shorter response) hehe. but answer is very similar to mine so i guess i wasn't that much wrong :P :) thanx for answer anyway
Edit: Rose = Roze (my bad)

:P I could have written more and go into more detail but I thought the gist explanation would be better.

Sense UI is a customized user-interface designed to run over the sturdy Android OS.

So in theory Android OS and Sense UI are two different layers in the system. If this was the case, all HTC is required to do is simply overlay its Sense UI over the new FroYo firmware. But from what we see with the previous updates...this doesn't seem to be the case and Sense UI is more integrated...or...HTC is simply lying to the public ;) lol

They are different layers, but they have to work together. Sense is an interface for Android, so if Android is significantly changed then Sense will end up pointing to the wrong bits if you tried to make it do anything without changing it as well. Also none of the new features would have been integrated so there would be no way to access them through Sense.

My phone keeps saying phone out of memory, i have deleted so many apps and still it gives me notifications . My contacts take about 80mb and googlemaps about 7mb with updates inc. The rest are about 1mb or under mb
