***Official Droid 2 Pre-Release Discussion Thread***

So here's a question: If the August 23 launch date is to be believed, when do you expect an official announcement? It seems awkward for Moto to have a major announcement of a new phone immediately before or immediately after launching the Droid X.

It's funny, I've been a WM fanboy for years and have decided to dump the platform for Android. After reasearching for what seems like months I've settled on the Droid but I don't want to pull the trigger if the Droid 2 is coming out soon.

I'm coming from T-Mobile and have the HD2 and I think the size is pretty close to to Droid X and while the screen looks good the phone is just too big and thin I feel like it's going to break if my kid sits on my lap when it's in my pants pocket.

just put android on your HD2

+1,

to the guys with the HD2....if you're satisfied with T (cough) mobile, then just put android on the HD2...your other option (which I think is a good one) is get the Evo on Sprint (when it becomes available again), unlimited everything for 1 price, 4G now is certain areas, soon in more places (don't know where you're from) same phone as the HD2, better coverage than T-Mo probably...

or wait til Xmas, for the next HTC on VZW, which is the EVO/HD2 supposedly called the Venture, or even the Scorpion with a 1.5ghz Snappy....all conjecture at this point. but worth waiting for IMO

the Droid 2 will not be able to run custom ROMs from what I've been reading, root, probably, but no Cyanogen goodness...if you're into that sorta thing....

so my suggestions 1) install Android on HD2, 2) get EVO on Sprint, 3) get Droid, not D2, unless you're not going to root, than D2, 4) wait for new HTC VZW phones possibly Xmas-ish

hope this helps

Is this an internal document only or marketing material that hasn't been released yet? I'm confused because it lists both the Droid 2 and the Droid X as coming soon, but that can't be right since the Droid X is going to be released before the Droid 2 is officially announced.

From my understanding this is Verizon latest catalog which shows off their latest devices....

It is guessed to be coming out in August

I'm just hoping that we see some hands-on video, and some bootloader confirmation soon.

Engadget managed to get their hands on the Droid X exactly 1 month before launch, so if the same happened with the Droid 2 (assuming the predicted launch on 8/23), maybe we'll see some hands-on this time next week.

By hands-on, I obviously mean more than just externals that we've already seen.

Yeah, you're right. I actually just walked into a Verizon store to check out the Droid X, and I saw this calendar, just as it appeared online. So there you go. The information is official, in print, and available to the public.

I runs exactly the same as the Droid X software wise.

I figured it would for the most part, but I'm really interested in reading some comparison testing/reviews/videos in regards to the keyboard, battery life, etc. Is it packing the same battery as the D1, or better yet, the DX?

PS - You need to start leaking some videos to the tech sites. ;)

What batteries do the Droid X and Droid have?

The chance of me leaking things like that is about the same as the chance of Cubs winning the World Series this year.

I understand. I'm assuming you're a tester of some sort. No big deal, someone will definitely leak some videos shortly, and my guess would be inside a week. Happens everytime.

As for batteries:

Incredible: 1300mAh
Droid: 1390mAh
Droid X: 1540mAh

Optimally, it'd be nice to see Motorola throw the 1540 into the Droid 2, but that's doubtful. I would seriously hope they upped it from 1390 though.

Greater than the Incredible, lesser than the DX...
Well, that still leaves the possibility that it's the same battery as the Droid 1. We'll find out soon enough though.

By the way, you said it's running the same software as the DX, but that would mean it's still running Android 2.1, when every single rumor we've seen has it launching with 2.2.

I'd be willing to bet we'll have a full spec sheet and/or hands-on video by the end of the week or early part of next week.

Well the testers who have had it so far have stated it as on 2.1, they could have either got an earlier model that didn't have 2.2 or they are going to push the 2.2 as soon as people start using them. I would say if it will come with 2.2 and that the people who have used them already had an earlier model that came with 2.1.

I know which battery it has, I just don't want to say exactly.

When I said the same software as the DX, I could have been a little off. You might want to go with the rumors....

D2 running Froyo: Exclusive: DROID 2 Running Android 2.2 - Droid Life: A Droid Community Blog

It's funny to see all the D1 owners saying "oh, I can't believe it's running Blur" or "oh, it's gonna have a locked bootloader."

What's gonna be even funnier? When the D1 gets the official Froyo update, which includes this version of Blur (or whatever you want to call it), and also locks the bootloader. Let's go a step further. After locking the bootloader, the D1 won't get Gingerbread.

Watch.
