I think this might help but not sure
Talk to the people in the inn/tavern and/or the mage in the main castle. Also, follow the blood spatters on the ground there.
I think I tried most of that. Went all over windhelm ... though I haven't been back there in a while with that character (and I'm avoiding windhelm with the other character ;)) I'll have to see if there is someone I missed talking to. I was able to pretty well summarize who I thought it was - but the game just wouldn't have the dialog available... a little frustrating - but nearly as much so as hearing about leaked copies days before the real release :)
Thanks though, I haven't played skyrim in a while but I might have to revisit that quest (disabled it in the quest log lol)

They say its best to start and end Blood on Ice while you have not yet joined either civil war or dark brotherhood quests, since there are some NPC killing issues regarding those quests.

maybe that was it then, I was definitely starting to get involved in the stormcloaks... wait, maybe not... because Windhelm is where Stormcloak is at, and that's who my very prideful nord sided with ;)

Maybe the cat-thief character could avoid all that non-sense and finish a quest ;)

LOL. I tried to make a video, it was like around 2min long showing my bows and taking out enemies but it was friggin 2GB in size! Made it using FRAPS and I was like, damn this is huge, its gonna take forever to upload to Youtube. Basically it was a similar video to yours, took down the Giants and Mammoths at Bleakwood. Apparently, I can take down a Giant in one shot now (if I was sneaking), 2 shots if not (unless the x3 crit kicks in which makes it one shot).

EDIT: Sadly, no dragon came swooping down when I was there at the time.

Same here... the video tape took me like 4Gb but i used Camtasia Studio Pro to share it directly on youtube... It took lie twenty minutes and it's also 720p. ;)

How does it share faster? Using same connection?

Anyway, I started my next character. At level 58 the only quests I had left were the little side quests and the College quest and the gauldur amulet, I think. It seems off to get the Archmage title when the character I'm playing is not a mage so... I'll wait for the next major patch with more missions to play him and get him Mage perks in conjuration.

I'm gonna try to make a Breton mage with no destruction spells. LOL. I wanted to try making a Nord and side with the Stormcloacks this time, but somehow, deep down me, I think that if I should do so, I need to make a Nord for siding with Stormcloaks, and not a Breton. LOL.

I went full double handed weap nord to start with. A Proper smack it till it dies class. I want a fast dual wield hack n slash class next time round. Suggestions for best class/race combo?

There's none really. If you want a dual weilding hack/slash high elf you can do it. You just have to pick between the special powers. For proper "look" though, a Bosmer or a Khajit would make the most probable sneaky dual weilders, while a Nord, Imperial, or Orc for the heavy armor guys. Maybe an Argonian too.

An orc is probably the best tank though for 60secs because of berserk.

Mine was also disabled at some point due to a bug but....

[Hide]
After the war the wizard showed up standing in the middle of the Windhelm castle -- I was able to talk to him then and the quest got going again, but my bug was in a different spot.

It sounds like you didnt talk to the Windhelm guard who mentions the blood spatters on the ground (which you should then follow).

Otherwise if you're on a PC you can always advance the quest via console commands.

But there are several people in the inn worth talking to as well, they all could possibly push things along....dunno

hth!

Hmm... I'll have to try it again this weekend (hopefully time permits ;))

I seem to remember talking to guards about The Butcher  at one point, so I'm not sure if it is that... I haven't been to that city in quite a while in that save file, so maybe the bug has resolved itself?

I think it was the civil war quest in general. All three quests (Imperial, Stormcloak and Blood on Ice) offer the chance of buying a house in Windhelm as part of the rewards.

If i change my race during gameplay do i lose something excepting race bonuses? I want to change my race to Khajit via console command showracemenu

Not sure, but I would bet money you'd either a) get the new races bonus, or b) be able to set your race bonus via another command.

Yea haha i've seen this before but it's still funny as hell... anyway i'm tired of "arrow to the knee" jokes.. they're outdated already :)

has anybody played this:D

^ hahaha

So how's everyone's progression in Skyrim going? I've once again re-created a new character... I'm such a perfectionist lol ;) (hint hint Android ;))

the first was a orc warrior named Kruk... didn't like the heavy weapons and armor

Breton Mage with a real long pathetic name... Nathaniel Luke Johnson LOL but got tired of just standing around and casting stuff.

So now I'm playing a Khajiit theif named Exodar! and I'm loving the play style... his level is between 13-16 I can't remember lol I only play on the weekends.

Try this:

Make a Jedi:

Bound Swords with Magicka swords Mod to make them look and sound like lighsabers

Main spells would be Illusion and Alteration, and maybe a bit of Restoration.

Perks would go to Illusion, Alter, Speech, Resto, Conj, One-H. (not sure if block affects blocking using weapons?)

Wear robes to look like Jedi, or Nightingale (Darth Maul) or Nightingale+Dragon Mask (then name him Anakin or Vader).

Does anyone else have a lot of trouble creating names. I always end up looking through other TES games for inspiration. Like when naming the Khajiit, you do some Da'kiir or something like that. I think that was the name of my character. ;)

Agarth... mage or knight?

haha I have trouble with names too, I'm really picky about the names. I named my Khajiit Exodar, after one of my favorite places in another game I used to play.

as for Agarth... I can see it being both a mage and warrior, but not a thief. Personally I think it's better for a warrior, with the mage a close second.

LOL. I tend to use names from books, myths and legends, whether ancient or just contemporary lore. If you're having trouble with names, try WoW's random name generator which will make a name based on the character's race. LOL.

I got tired of my Bosmer archer since I smithed enchanted the hell out of him.

I am currently playing a Breton mage named Merlin, at level 19, with the handicap of no fast travel, but I think I'll restart him from scratch. A guy at the Nexus forum was blogging about his exploits in no fast travel, so I got an idea. I will make Merlin again from scratch, and blog his life in Skyrim into a first person journal. LOL.

My handicap will be:

1.) No fast travel other than 1 time use of cart from Whiterun to Winterhold. At that point I'll be too weak to take on Sabre cats, and there is a fort of bandits on the road to Winterhold, so sort of very little choice.

2.) No destruction spells. Just Conjuration, Illusion, Alteration, Restoration. Will use enchanting, but not sure about alchemy yet.

3.) No armor, pure mage.

4.) No companion unless quest forced.

5.) Be a good guy as much as possible.

6.) Play totally immersed, as if with no previous knowledge of quests or locations.

7.) Try to explore as much as possible.

8.) Will not use exploit (use enchant to make better potions to make better enchanments to make even better potion), I will just use the 25% alchemy enchantment and whatever enchance enchanting potions comes out of that if I decide to use alchemy.

I think it will be more fun to play this way and more immersive. LOL.
