Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

I got a date that will make us all happy Bill. Release the darn thing on May 7th!!!!!!!!! So I have said, so it shall be! PLEASEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!! I would take it now wouldn't you? :)
Of course! Most of us have been drooling over this thing since CTIA.

Bill if you do somehow manage to nail this date right you will be forever called and known as the fortune teller.
No, no... that's your job :)

The worst thing about all this speculation (release dates, etc) is that while it's just speculation, it makes so much sense! Bill makes great points about why May 22nd makes perfect sense, and while I really, really want to believe that Bill is right, if Jackson says June is more likely, personally, even without Jackson giving a reason, I'll believe him until he's hopefully proven wrong about June(again, sorry Jackson).

May 22nd makes sense, June 6th/13th did make sense (before this whole Apple thing), and just about any day in May (prior to Memorial Day weekend) makes sense (if the phone is really ready). I just hope we all don't get disappointed on May 12th, if something we don't want to hear is announced.

had a fun time reading the last 5 or so pages haha. i still cant see sprint doing something smart. its just not in them lol. theres so many factors in determining anything right now. i just hope it doesnt come out during my finals lol. i would never get any time to study or sleep haha. id be in awe of the evo.

haha love you too Bill, if someone didn;t go against the grain once and a while than this thread would not be half the fun. Could you give me some insight where you getting the day of the 22 from? I said it was possible that it could be moved up, infact it may even me likely, but i was thinking somewhere around labor day. Maybe explaining your 22nd reasoning could help clear some things up for me?

Jackson
LOL Labor day is in Septmeber. Don't you mean memorial day? I hope evo comes out on the 22nd of May and not on Labor day in September.

A lot of people travel long distances, go camping or boating, hang at the beach, etc. A holiday weekend wouldn't be good and the 28th is too close to WWDC anyway.

I agree bill they need to stay as far away from WWDC as possible!!!! I was looking on Engadget's review for the week and the Steve Job's statement about flash had almost two paragraphs and the Incredible had a whole 3 sentences. Not to mention Apple found a way to make a headline every day..

I would love for that to be true, really I would - but I just don't see it happening. If (when?) it does I'll own up to it too.

I love Jackson's posts, but I am gonna side with pokey on this. I was there for the massive Pre release last June and what a low turn out that was. I know this is a hundred times better, but still...

If I am wrong, do I have to eat something? I am really just fine with you pointing at me and making me look like a moron :)

Wow! This board is moving fast tonight... Hard to keep up. A few things..........

It's May, finally! Two weeks ago it seemed like two years before the Evo release. Now, whether May 22 or June 13, I feel as though we're counting down the days.

I too believe there will be surprises on the specs and special 4G apps. Who knows what we'll see in the final production.

I also think Sprint is more concerned with 4G rollout than any Iphone timelines in regards to release dates, but I tend to waffle on this one.

The Nexus 1 will be the 2nd 4G phone released by Sprint. Same operating system, same handset maker, different size to appeal to those who want a smaller form factor, and... Verizon not getting it so, if you're gonna make a cdma N1, go ahead and stick a 4g radio in it and call it the Nexus 1 4G from Sprint! Too easy.

Just my speculation.

I said this about a week ago and people thought I was crazy.. lol... Now i know I am not alone!!

I agree. See why I chose the 22nd?

Yeah, I forget who it was also, but someone made that point a couple of times.

I made that point! :) And here's another one...while I agree with the idea this phone could...and should drop before Labor Day....the one and only thing I can think of stopping such a release is if certain things are set in motion already...such as prearranged advertising.

And here's my most recent thought that someone might address! What about the fact that Sprint employees were being told not to take vacation? When exactly does this vacation block start? It could be....and this is really off the chart speculating...that employees were told not to be off during the scheduled launch. Now...if the launch was always being secretly scheduled for earlier....this would make things go more smoothly...but if you plan a phone release early...will vacation schedules be thrown off. Once again...all highly speculative...and perhaps a little overblown....but vacation and advertising.....how set in stone were the plans?

Edit: To clarify...what I was saying originally is that I agree with the idea of an earlier release...and that it would be smart to take advantage of Memorial Day weekend...and how people like to have a new phone for traveling...and like to show their new toys off to friends and family. So...while I didn't have an exact date picked out....I think...sure why not...May 22nd...works for me! With this said....see my comments above....is it too late for Sprint to change the dates? Was this the diabolical plan all along? Inquiring minds want to know!

I think i would prefer a release that comes a week after they announce the date!! At this point anyone that plans on getting one has already made up their mind.. Make other companies work hard to come up with a media story to steal the attention from the EVO and the new 4G coverage areas!!

Thanks, andiron, I believe the advertising part has been underway for a long time. Prior to CTIA nothing was being said about the HTC Supersonic and I was getting bummed out about it. Then, on March 23, wham! All hell broke loose and everyone was carrying the story, much to my delight. I think we're in a similar situation now and Sprint is doing their best to keep everything under wraps as much as possible. They don't want to tip their hand and that's why we're not seeing anything, but all of that is about to change.

So I don't know if this has been said or not, but the pricing for the EVO 4G has been decided on, both in terms of the phone and the plan, but no one besides the team working on the EVO know, not even my contact in billing R&D.

Also, because Sprint billing does not have a mechanism to charge separately for 4G tethering vs. 4G data on the phone, there is good chance that there will be an extra charge if you want to use 4G of any kind on this phone. The reason 4G doesn't cost extra on a Overdrive is because it is rolled in as tethering cost.

Welcome, mayanka. Just so I understand you correctly, are you saying there's a good chance there won't be an extra charge for 4G. I'm curious, because that's what Hesse said at CTIA, but you actually said the opposite. We've also come to believe there will be a $10-$20/month charge for using the EVO as a hotspot.

I am already sitting on the edge of my seat any further and I will fall over!!!
Sorry, I guess I should get some Zzzz's as well. I think you know what I meant.

Well, what was told to me was that there is not mechanism set-up, at least not YET, for Sprint to charge differently for just using 4G data vs for tethering (aka hotspot).

So based on that info, there are two options - to include both 4G and tethering in Everything Plus (I really hope so!!!), or sadly, charge extra for 4G, but include tethering in that price.

Also, just as a heads up, all voice (so for calls) will be going over EV-DO, as 4G has only so far been set-up for data. Later when the network is more fleshed out, will they be able to do VoIP on 4G.

Another point - this phone has been in internal testing since October(!) so it better be stable...unlike the Incredible turning off!
