Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

hey guys so from what i;ve heard so far the meeting last night was indeed about the supersonic. The employees were told this would be the android 2.2, Sprint, and HTC flagship device. They went into explaining what android is and all that good. Stuff. At some locations an Evo was on hand, at others not soo much. THe details of the phone were highlightes but not really anything we didn't know about =[. From what i have been told there was no mention of a blackberry slider jut Evo. There were handouts that had product descriptions and info for employees to tell customers. Maybe something more interesting will fuddle though thourghout the day because this is all i got.

On the plus side android 2.5 looks like a beast! Can;t wait to get it in my hands!!

It's been pretty much confirmed that the EVO 4G will have the latest Android update (Froyo), but will it be Android 2.2 or Android 2.5? I know it's only a number, but 2.2 seems like an incremental upgrade, where as 2.5 sounds like a major upgrade. I'm hoping it will be 2.5. From the description of Froyo that we were reading yesterday, it's Google's solution to Android fragmentation.

"Froyo will be detached of the usual set of first party applications and core components that currently populate the OS. Instead of bundling those applications with the operating system, Google will instead make them available through the Android Market for download".

"This new approach will apply to both Android applications and system components. So for example, if Google brings a new update to the virtual keyboard or email application, all one would have to do is download the update directly from the Market as it instantly becomes available. No longer would users have to wait for their carrier or manufacturer to make it available for download".

That pretty much seems like a hard right turn to me, so my feelings are that it could be 2.5. Heck, it might even be Android 3.0.

It looks like we're one step closer to me just running
Code:
$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
on my phone to get all the latest and greatest :)

It seems like we'll have to wait just a little longer to learn more about the EVO 4G. As far as that Sprint employee meeting last night, some information might leak, but I don't think we'll learn much. If what Jackson told us is true (and why shouldn't it be) we're going to start hearing a lot about the phone starting in a couple of weeks.

I had a lot of anxiety about the Supersonic because information was so slow to come. Now, since the announcement of the EVO 4G, I feel relieved to have pictures, videos, and specs. I still think we have CTIA to thank for all the information we have already. Had it not been for that, we might not know anything about the phone yet.

I read an article last night confirming that Best Buy is going to start taking orders for the EVO 4G next month and their customers will be the first to get the phone, so it's getting very close.

If Google wants to slow down their updates it would make sense to have it as 2.5. Hopefully we hear more about Froyo soon and EVO pricing/availability.

I do not believe it is fake. The virtualization of apps on phones is something I have known was in developement, so that devs could write apps once and then run on any phone. Seriously, what will apple have left to boast about, after this goes live?

Apple: "we have 130000 apps!"
Google: "we have our 30000 plus your 130000 plus Palm's 2000!!!"
Apple: "well, on AT&T's network, we can do voice and data at same time"
Google: "On Sprint, we can do voice and data (unconfirmed, but I know it will on 4g), plus be a 4g wifi hotspot for 8 people, while on the phone"
Apple: "... yeah, well.... but iPhones are cool??"
Google: "...chuckle..."

so have any of you actually downloaded the file in this article? i think they might have SOMETHING real atleast, i downloaded it expecting a picture of a lolz cat saying "you gotz prnked" or something BUT all i got was a readme with a link to a description on how to use system.xjf.gz files and then googles system.xjf.gz file itself... it's ~64mb of data so it has to be SOMETHING, although it seams a little small for an OS a ~64mb file in .xjf.gz format seams a little over the top for a prank...

someone who actually knows how to see the contents of this file time post back with what you find
Gizmodo got fooled by a fake Froyo ROM

Would this not make the Android OS lite ? Kind of like Google Chrome vs Firefox browser? You add what you want vs bogging down the OS with stuff some will never use.

EVO would be much faster with smaller OS, right ?

Now once you load 5000 apps and start running more it will slow down but this would be the users choice, right ?

I think it's a great approach

I like the idea of Froyo...starting with a base product and giving the user the option to add components via app store. I think this is a great way to avoid the discrepancies and differences between each build and carrier. So now they can focus on innovating apps and making sure we get the most out of our experience with android instead of dealing with the maintenance nightmare of trying to keep builds consistent across carriers

I agree. Hopefully the android market can now compete with, if not destroy the appstore. It definitely has the potential to do just that, if it is done properly

I think you are right Bill. The importance of the changes in froyo would have to constitute a higher number change than a .2 from .1

I have always like the idea of being able to choose what it is I am using when it comes to software. that is why I have always built my own computers so that I can choose what Is put on it.

I have never anticipated the release of any device as much as this one.

NEEEEEED MOOOOORE INFOOOOO
