Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

I have a question that may be completely ignorant or sound stupid, but I just wanted to clarify regarding 4G/Wimax and using the EVO as a wireless router. I wasn't sure if it was more appropriate to ask in here or the WiMax thread, so I'm posting it in here first (Mods can move later if they'd like).

If 3-4 friends connect to my phone as a router, does that mean they'll be connected to the 4G network (through my phone) for browsing at that time? In other words, would the EVO (in essence) provide the same type of service that the Overdrive does?

On top of that, will there be security features available (just like any wireless router), where we'd be able to set a username/passcode to prevent from other devices connecting to the EVO?

Thanks, in advance, for those that know the exact answer to these questinos.

In short, yes.

We can't know for sure YET, but given the marketing: yes, the EVO is basically an OverDrive + Phone.

It is just like WMWifiRouter on a Windows Mobile phone or a Mifi or Overdrive device. These programs have been around for ages but never officially adopted by carriers. Over the past several months they are starting to get behind it and with 4G Sprint will have the bandwidth to handle the traffic easily.

That's awesome, dude. Please keep us informed! Does it look legit? Did the email come from an @sprint.com domain?

Oh it's definitely legit. It took me to a registration page behind a sprint.com domain where I filled out my information to sign up.

When I first entered the first of my two business emails, it didn't go through, but did after the second one. So clearly this system is aware of who got invites and only allows those who did to sign up.

I'm definitely curious if they'll have 4G turned on in NYC for the event. I know NYC is already wired for it (and it just requires the "flipping of a switch").

Amazing. This is the first we've seen firsthand of this event being fully legit. You should tip Engadget so the major media picks this up!

Thanks for sharing.

I wonder if the event is at the Javits center...

Thanks! I kept thinking to myself that using the phone as a hot spot isn't a function I could see myself using that much (out of all the "selling points" for the EVO)...but then, I realized that there are so many times that I'm nowhere near a place that has wi-fi with friends and this would be awesome to provide a higher speed connection for them!...LOL.

Exactly! One of the ways I convince people that i need this phone is this:

"Imagine you're driving somewhere with me and you need to do something on your laptop. If I have my phone with me, you've got a wifi bubble that moves around you."

The short answer is yes and yes. Sprint showed off the iPhone running off the hub in 4G. The EVO is supposed to do the same thing. In one of the videos I saw, it showed a settings option for 4G where you enter a password to protect it.

I didn't realize the event's existence was even in question. I could have told you guys a while ago it's been very real for a some time! I just hadn't gotten my invite up until last night.

EDIT: And no, it's not at the Javits Center. More west than that.

I've been skeptical about the event because only a couple of small Android enthusiast websites have reported it, and no major sites like Engadget or Gizmodo or BGR.

More West than the Javits center? Hmm...The Intrepid?

LOL...I guess my thoughts about getting this phone were completely selfish because I kept thinking to myself, "I don't need to worry about that extra charge for using the phone as a hotspot because I'll never really need to use that." I guess I was completely wrong.

Now, my main concern should be having a portable charger in the event I plan on doing this!...hahahaha.

A car charger and extra charger for my desk at work are going to be my first accessory purchases, immediately followed by a car dock.

Exactly, even Sprint had a Press Release for the event in LA on the 17th but nothing about NY!!!

the only thing that sucks is i have like 6 of the chargers for the prior series of htc devices so there all gonna be sitting in my old boxes

Hey all, just wanted to update my last post about the May 12 EVO party in NYC. I just got my invite to the event and will try and get some info up to you guys as it happens! Two weeks from tomorrow!

Maybe I'll even post to the forums from an EVO!

Is there anything in the fine print, of your event invite, that prevents you from revealing additional information to us? Can you/are you interested in Live-Blogging the event for us? Wish I could offer you something in exchange.

If you are like me and only need a portable hotspot on occasion, you should look into one of the third party apps that do that for a one-time charge or for free. Might be a few months until PDANet or whoever puts out a Wimax-capable version but it'll happen. I use my Pre as a hotspot in the car maybe twice a year when I go visit the gf's fam up in rural PA. Not worth a monthly charge for me.

HTC Car Dock is #1 priority

As long as there's a microUSB>USB cable, that'll work for my need to charge at work.

But on the road, if I'm out and about, I'd like to get that solar key chain charger that I was reading about. That'd be ideal, especially because my phone batteries always seem to go dead when I'm not near a car charger or home charger.

Oh, sweet! I didn't know those existed...hahahaha. Never thought of it because 3G wasn't fast enough for me to bother with it.

Yeah, that'd probably be ideal for me.

Sell them on ebay. That's what I plan on doing, since they'll all be irrelevant to the EVO.

Jeph, can you confirm that the invite does in fact a HUGE typo about the EVO being the first Android phone? Or, did they correct it?

My Pre is going straight to eBay on June 7th.

Hahaha...Same with my Touch Pro. Just hoping there are still people willing to buy it. Considering ALL the accessories I have and the good condition of the phone, I'm hoping there are still people that'll want it, even if it's just for the accessories (which I think if I added up the amounts, the accessories would be close to the actual phone price).

Same here...I hope that a touchstone and 2 AC adapters will sweeten the deal.

I believe the Intrepid is north of the center. More west than the javits center would be the hudson river! :D

I don't believe that a solar charge will provide enough juice to even maintain your battery level if you're charging and using at the same time. I hope I'm wrong, but solar charging hasn't really taken off.

Hi all! Wanted to introduce myself - I am a LONG time lurker (been wanting the supersonic -> evo since I first heard rumors about it late last year) that finnaly decided to show myself. I have an ancient nokia dumb phone on AT&T and will be switching to the EVO once it is released. I am super excited about the android platform and am even thinking about doing some simple app development for it. I am usually a pretty quiet guy when in forums, but I will always be lurking ;-)

And the plot thickens:

Samsung Galaxy S launching on June 1? (Phone Arena News)

If Samsung actually pulls this off it would be a major blow to the Evo, IMO. Much more so than the Incredible.
Hi. Good afternoon. Looks like that will be expensive. But I have had the instinct and well we know how that phone sucks. LOL I will stick with EVO. Evo will be better than galaxy. Galaxy looks like its $800 or so..but that to is a rumor according to that website. Evo will wrap fingers around Galaxy.Just my personal feelings.
