Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

Argh. What I've been trying to say is that it has nothing to do with megapixel count. Please realize that 720p is 1280x720 resolution which equals 921,600 pixels, which is less than even 1 megapixel. Yes, that's right, 720p is less than 1 megapixel in resolution. So, with everything else being equal on a 720p camcorder, there is no visible difference in resolution between a 1, 8, or 12 megapixel sensor. What's impressive about the Nokia N8 video is how clean it is in terms of noise and compression artifacts... and how smooth and consistent the frame rate is.

In terms of resolution, the EVO is more than capable of producing similar results. However, the jury is out on the rest of the hardware and software within the phone.
Yes, when you talk of a camera ability to take 12, 10,8, etc...in MP it simply is the ability to fill in pixels.. Anyone has zoomed up on a 1.3mp image and seen how it turns to crap. I am sure other people have snap a shot with 8mp and beyond and the results are impressive. The thing that helps with improved MP is not only the crispness of a shot, but the ability to zoom up to the image and still have the same crispness. I mean the EVO is coming close to rival most dedicated camera's in that regard IMHO

Cary had a link in a post quite a while back, or possibly in another thread, which showed a company that does custom painted on skins, to give you all kinds of different groovy colors. very expensive though, but so worth it. I will probably do it. around $150 if I remember.

Hey Norril -

Are you referring to this? This is the same company as the invisible shield and lets you design your own skin on the same type of protective material - about 20 bucks or so:

ZAGG | ZAGGskins | Cases, Screen Protectors, Covers, Shields, Skins, Invisible Shield

This company actually takes your device and paints it with their own proprietary powder coating paint method - the super expensive one:

ColorWare

Hope this helps

In terms of video, all those extra megapixels are going to waste. There is no difference in video resolution for 720p video shot from a 1mp or 10mp sensor, because the final video is being stored and compressed as 720p (less than 1 mp). What you're referring to is "digital zoom," which is the process of cropping the outside pixels of a photo to make the final version appear as if it has been zoomed into. However, no additional detail is being created. Also, once a video is stored at 720p, all the extra pixels from a 10mp sensor have been binned. Those details are never recoverable again.

The point I was hoping to make was that 720p video shot from a Nokia N8, which has a 10mp sensor, will not appear sharper than 720p video shot from an EVO, which has a 8mp sensor, because the final video format can only handle a resolution of less than 1mp. The determining factor for video quality then will be things such as compression type and bandwidth as well as processing power for consistent framerates. If anything, if two sensors are different in megapixel count but identical in physical size, the quality of the pictures coming out of the lower-megapixel sensor will generally be of better quality (though less sharp). These images will have better dynamic range and less noise.

This is why an image from an 8mp phone cam like the EVO in many ways might actually look worse than an image from a 5mp phone cam. It may be sharper, but dynamic range and low-light performance generally suffer.

I just want to make sure we all have realistic expectations for the EVO. I know that Sprint is billing it as a replacement for other specialized devices, but I hope people will recognize that specialized devices will almost always outperform a device like the EVO, which has size, weight, and budget constraints. I'm definitely excited about using the EVO to take pictures and record video, but it will not replace my DSLR or even a good point and shoot when I'm concerned with technical and artistic quality... in the form of shallow depth of field, wide dynamic range, and natural low-light shooting (all things a phone cam can never accomplish because of the limitations placed on small sensors by the laws of physics).

For impromptu shots, though, the EVO's going to be great!

:)

about the whole sending pix on the evo thing...

if i remember right, my nokia n95 with a 5mp camera would automatically scale down a pic if you send it via mms. hopefully something like that would be in the evo?

Although that would be nice I doubt it. I have to manually crop down the pics from my hero in order to make them MMS appropriate.

As for the camera things I get what you guys mean. I remember going into the mall and checking out the HD2 and it raped my Hero in video quality because of the Processor and the good frame rate even though they have the same 5 MP camera. I would just enjoy something decent-good with the Evo so I won't have to carry around a camera when I have an awesome phone to use. (The reason I didn't end up just get an iTouch and got the Hero instead for calling and media.)

Yea the Hero couldn't even send pictures that you took with it because the file was to big. I would have to email it or email it then send it back to my phone and save it to my sd card then send it. basically anything taken with the camera was to big of a file. but send it back to yourself it works fine or use handcent or another messaging app and it works fine. I hope the EVO doesn't have this issue. Not that it's a big one but that's like an extra step to be doing all that. Little nick nack stuff should be cleared up.

Coming from the Pre, where this wasn't an issue I was really let down by this personally. Do all android phone's have this issue or was it somthing limited to the Hero alone? Another thing seemed to be phone calls. I seem to be missing calls becuase it'll only ring on my end twice maybe 3 times, but when I ask a freind if they just hung up they'ed tell me the phone rang forever.... I'm liking Android, but I hope this isn't the extent....

i'm assuming this is why Hesse was so confident in saying the EVO would have flash 10.1 out of the box. adobe probably assured them it'd be ready to roll by EVO release, and make EVO the first android phone (phone in general?) with full flash support. fantastic :). can't wait for the NY EVO event, Google I/O, etc. just a few weeks away!

Hasnt Google/Android...maybe not so much Sprint, has clearly said the EVO would be released with 2.Whatever or Froyo either on it, or the update would be relatively right after.

So if Flash is coming before Froyo, and that is not til June, then we really shouldnt be expecting the EVO before then.

By the way, since Im not too familiar with Android....are these updates, like Froyo, OTA Updates?

Nobody said Flash had to come with Froyo and Flash could easily be delivered as an app or maybe an ota update. Froyo will not be an ota update but should pave the way for future ota updates to fight fragmentation.

You lost me a little. The consensus is that this phone will be released in the 1st or second week of June. Thus the statement is right in line with the percieved release date of our precious EVO. Also regarding the last part of your statement, supposedly Froyo is to eliminate the fragmentation of Android. While in the past you had to wait for updates through your independent carrier, Froyo intends to provide any future updates of Android through the marketplace and thereby available to all whenever.

And to add to Sassy's question, what does that mean for Sense enabled devices (like the EVO)? I keep hearing that Sense needs to be updated whenever Android is which is the one problem many people have with Sense.

YouTube - HTC EVO 4G Demonstration Part II

Look at the video again at about the 2 minute mark and look in the left hand corner of the EVO screen

That video proves nothing in terms of Flash coming with Froyo. Actually it just proves that the EVO will have Flash, which everyone knew. Adobe themselves said they have been working on getting Flash ready for mobile devices. My personal opinion is that Flash will already exist in EVO or be side-loaded through the marketplace. I believe it to be a seperate entity in terms of Froyo. Froyo is Froyo and Flash is Flash. They don't go hand in hand.

eieio, when you say "about the 2 minute mark and look in the left hand corner of the EVO screen". What exactly are we supposed to see? Also, just beyond the 2 minute mark, the person demonstrating the phone said it had Flash on it, but obviously, it's not version 10.1. I would assume that can be updated with an OTA update in June.

In your quote from LatinP, he said Froyo would not come as an OTA update. If that's true, how will be get that update?

I am not disagreeing with you. The video was just to show flash running on the device..

Agreed. If anything they could just bring it all together since Froyo is all new but yes, separate.

Well I tried out an Incredible today...

Gotta say I was not impressed. The 16:9 screen ratio that it shares with the motorola droid really makes it too cramped in the width of portrait mode. I also noticed the colors are way over exaggerated on that screen, while the droid and eris were normal on the same web pages.

So for me at least, 4.3" is my minimum from now on - I'd go bigger with the scorpion in a year if it's an option, or a dell streak style device with less bezel and made by htc, but I will never be tempted or impressed by the commoners' many 3.7" devices, it's way too ordinary already.

We're all ready for the first real superphone Hesse, bring it on!

Wow really? I thought it looked a little skinny for a screen in videos but never held a 3.7 screen in my hand. Just seen it at a distant. I think the purpose for that screen is to keep it thin in all dimensions. I would like to go see it for myself though. Just to see through the hype. Every nice phone will have it's hype even the EVO. But I will respect the EVO's hype more.

does any1 know if the evo or android supports viewing pics in portrait and landscape mode. i checked out an HD2 yesterday and the tmobile rep nor myself was able to change a portrait pic to landscape and vice versa. my pre is able to do this so i was wondering if maybe the phone was glitching or not tilted enough or something

um yeah, don't ya just flip the phone?

we smacked it up, flipped it and rubbed it down, to no avail...and the reps apparently had no clue...after we failed in doing so, the rep said it was not possible with the device

as i said, i've never used an android device so i'm trying to learn about it prior to getting my evo...sorry if it's a dumb question

Keep in mind the HD2 runs on Win-blows-mobile and that hampers a lot of the potential in that device.

Yea it does. Does both. That's standard for android. That's why they give you the option of a gird mode or slide mode when looking at pictures. My Hero does it. The music doesn't and I wish it did. Music apps in the market can though.

It can go in landscape in just about anything. Just not the native music player and certain parts of the settings.

And it's not a dumb question. You didn't know.

If I had to make a guess based on that video, I'd guess that Flash is coming on the device. This is probably one of the "tweaks" to the OS (and probably the browser) we've been hearing about.
