So are you saying in a few years we'll be saying bye bye to CDMA and GSM in favor of WiMAX and LTE?
No and yes.
No cdma and gsm will survive, but not on the frequencies used by the current members. Each gsm and cdma carrier has different bands they operate on. Verizon's cdma, Att's and tmobile's gms, and of there data will have to be changed to lte. Sprints cdma and pcs will not be effected. Unfortunately, lte does not have the bandwidth to anything.
But yes, gsm and cdma use spectrum that is need for lte and no current solution for this. There are many different possiblities. First the fcc needs to move things around to open spectrum. secondly, wimax will fill in for lte, allowing gsm and cdma to survive. Third, sprint does not need to change over the cdma or iden networks, so sprint will always have cdma. Lastly, all the system we currently look are not complete.
Let me try to describe what the future is like.
You will turn on your phone. It will look for a wimax, lte, and cdma signal.
When the phone has a wimax signal, it will use wimax as the connection, but when you enter a spot that does not have wimax it will use lte. And you will use lte/wimax/cdma for the voice connection. When you move to a low usage area, your phone will trade between lte and wimax depending on area.
Wimax will cover you in high density areas. Lte will cover you in low density areas, and you will use both for data and voice. Wimax will connect the lte to lte towers, covering up to 4 miles and cover you. Once you leave the town you will use lte. That is how the technology is going to work in the future. Both lte and wimax need each other.
There is no other choice for lte. They do not have the bandwidth to deliver voice and data. The current lte release does not support voice over gsm/cdma and lte. You have to turn off one radio to turn on the other. Some people thinks they got that fixed but I doubt it.
So the up shot is, sprint does not have to turn off their current system, to keep voice working.
But verizon has to turn off all their voice to convert to data.
