Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

hey ya'll...just want to know what people think about some of the things critics had to say about the evo. they were saying that the battery dies really fast and when using the phone, reception is really bad, not because of the signal but because of the evo? can anyone who has the evo already confirm any of these accusations?

can you link us to a place where this is being claimed? i have read fairly extensively on the evo and i have not heard this. yes, the battery will drain more quickly if you are in a non-4G city and you have your phone constantly searching for 4G.

be interested to read these complaints.

Mayhap I'll call within the 30-day grace period and say that I could get a better deal on Verizon--I get a 25% employee discount there vs. a 15% one at Sprint, so I won't be being entirely untruthful.

Secrets to Haggling With Cell Phone Salesmen

check out this link. I'm going to go into my local Sprint store and see if they can do anything for me--through studentrate, I'd be able to get the Evo for $125, waived activation, and my job gets me a 20% discount. Hopefully, they'll be able to best that. Good luck!

Question: If I do get them to agree to giving me a better employee discount, is there any way to make sure they do--I'd hate to forgo the studentrate discount and not even get the better discount. Also, if I were to call into retentions to hopefully get $10/24, should I be worried that they might remove the employee discount?

haven't seen it posted on here before

These are awesome and I want them NOW!!
The car dock looks slick, and these cases look like they can handle anything:D

Anyone have some info on these....or even where these photos were found?

True. I was more embarrassed than anything because of what happened. I'm feeling better about the whole situation now.

Howdy Bill, good to see you back after everything that happened and congrats on the EVO :D. Only 10 more days now.

I don't see it as being paranoid at all. I downloaded the .apk files but now I am seriously thinking twice before installing them. Swype is possibly going to record keystrokes? Doesn't sound secure for just a regular program to record keystrokes, passwords, cc numbers. WHY is it going to RECORD this info? WHERE is it being stored? Encrypted? Exactly how secure is it? People should ask themselves this info before saying "yes" to that prompt when it asks you if you are ok with this.

Have you ever used Android? Do you know how much access apps have to your personal information? There is NO privacy on these phones and websites anymore, you should get used to it, or stop using the Internet ;). Heck, webOS gives your GPS and wifi SSID to Palm every day. Android is even worse.

I might also mention that I plan on bringing at least 2 (and maybe three) other people to Sprint from AT&T and T-mobile on a family plan, and at least 2 of those people will be buying Evos for sure.

So! Current plan: Buy Evo at Best Buy the morning of the 4th. Go to a Sprint store around the end of the 30 days. Mention that I get better discounts at VZW, have a cheaper data plan on AT&T already, that I want to bring some friends over to Sprint, and (if true) that 4G coverage isn't what I expected. See what happens!

clambert and ruger: Good suggestions. I'll try and follow your lead, including the "sign me the fsck up" line. However, I've... already preordered at Best Buy. Have I screwed myself by giving away my hand? :\

No you have NOT given away your hand to Sprint. Sprint has no idea that you've pre-ordered anything.

GO FOR IT!

Edit: Don't use a local Sprint rep, see if you can't just set up your account over the phone. Sprint don't care if you don't have a cell phone yet. Then in a few days when you go to BB to get your phone the account will already be up and running when the BB guys call Sprint to activate your phone! You'll get the best of both worlds, a Sprint account already set up with discounts and a phone on the 4th with no damn rebates. Good luck!

Your preorder at Best Buy came with a gift card. The gift card is good for anything they sell at Best Buy. There is no penalty for not picking up your EVO. Just go buy something else at Best Buy with your gift card.

Has anyone here seen any advertisement for the Evo outside of the net, RadioShack, BestBuy & Sprint? It's like the phone doesn't even exist. I haven't seen or heard anything about it outside of those limited areas. Wasn't there supposed to be a huge ad blitz or something? It's so strange.

The only thing i have seen was in the back drop at the Nascar All Star Race in victory lane. Said evo 4g on the banner. Didnt hear any talking about it though

Oprah?

Meh, I wouldn't consider that so... Ppl heard her say EVO4g w/ Sprint, but they were still all "OOOOOOH Oprah doesn't want me to text while driving, I need to remember to sign up!" That and the name didn't register, she didn't really show it off... I don't know why everyone is so up in arms about this, who cares they haven't advertised yet, the rest of the country just doesn't know what they are(n't yet) missing!

How can you open an account w/o a device hooked to it? If you CAN I want to go this route also.

That turned out to be bad information spread by a supposed "insider" source.

Just for those looking at screen protectors... Everyone's been talking up the Zagg Intellishield. I've had those for my touch pro 2, but I recently got the PhantomSkinz because they actually give you a free extra one if you buy on the internet, they are way cheaper and this review for the palm pre convinced me: (link) Unfortunately the links to the pictures are all gone now, but I assure you the PhantomSkinz looked better, which is why I got them, and they are not as tacky feeling as the intellishield, so it is easier to swipe your fingers across them for scrolling.

My two cents.

I havent seen a TV ad but it was all over the NASCAR race last weekend. Sprint being the primary sponsor had place a big "ad" on top of the winners car after the race once he was in the winner circle. I also saw some signage about it around the track

I don't know for a fact that this would work but I would just call Sprint and see if I could set up an account, telling them up front that if I can that I am going to buy a EVO on the 4th from BestBuy. I had a grandfathered "fair and flexible" account with a Touch Pro and changed my account to an EVO compatible account before getting my EVO. Now I know that I had an existing account with an existing phone but I don't see any reason that Sprint would care that you were in fact opening a new account with no phone assigned to for a week or so. After all they want NEW CUSTOMERS. I could be all wet on this and Sprint may in fact be stupid enough to not do. But you've got nothing to lose and a whole lot to gain by getting your account set up ahead of time and then just walk into BB and get the phone activated on your already set up account instead of going through the "goat rodeo" of having a BB rep talking to a Sprint rep and trying to get your new account set up correctly.

Just my two cents,

One thing you can do, it activate it on a free phone, then return it on the 4th for the EVO, or see it they will get you an account going first, then attach the phone on the 4th when you get the EVO.

I cannot imagine they are going to turn away a new subscriber, especially if you are coming from At&t, plus that way, you dont have to go through any extra hassle on launch day, you just activate and skate !

Maybe after the whole Pre debacle, they decided marketing is overrated. :)

Anyway, I was gonna call Sprint about this tonight, but I wanted to see if anyone else has asked the question before. How does the $10 upcharge work? Does it automatically kick in when you activate an Evo on your line? What happens if you switch between phones on your account? Drop the Evo, add the Evo?

Pre didn't fail because of marketing. Those ads were everywhere, and the phone did get off to good sales. As soon as quality issues began to appear, Pre collapsed.

$10 upcharge is for the phone and begins as soon as you add the phone to your account. I suppose if you bought online and didn't receive and activate for several weeks you could get credit for unused time, but I was told it starts as soon as you activate the phone on your account. If you deactivate the phone, it stops but then it also will not work with Sprint service. If don't return the phone within 30 days, expect to get the full retail charge for the phone so I don't think switching outside that 30 days would come without getting billed for the full price.

So Idk how legitimate this is to anyone but when I recently met up with Billsmed and some of the other members of the forum here. I got some one on one time with the EVO and we ran it through the acid test http://acid3.acidtests.org to see what it would score for web browsing and page rendering. It was connected to wifi as was my 3rd gen ipod touch. The EVO scored a 93/100 while the ipod got a perfect 100/100. Nothing crazy but just something I thought I would share.

Anyone know if there's a way to connect Evo to a car/head unit USB and play music/navigation through the car speakers?

My car ('10 Honda Fit) has a female USB plug in the glove box. It's designed to plug in a thumb drive full of music files, which can then be accessed by the stereo. I plan to plug my EVO into this thing and see if the stereo can read the micro SD card. It would be awesome if connecting it allowed the EVO to use the stereo speakers for phone calls, but I suspect that's not going to happen. It would also be a nice bonus if it charged the EVO while connected.

Anyway, if your car has a similar plug, it might work to pipe music into your car stereo.

I play Pandora on my blackberry through my truck all the time. I do it through the 3.5mm jack on the phone and the aux in jack on the truck.

My own computer got a 20/100 and my comp works just fine for me..so what is this supposed to test anyway?
