***Official G-Nex first impressions thread*** Love it? Hate it?

I just flashed my first rom last night and I bought the extended battery so after the new battery syndrome ends I will report about it on the new kernel and rom :-D

Reception on this phone is AWFUL!!! Just got off the phone with escalated VZW tech along with a Samsung Tech support brought in to the convo. Samsung claims they're aware of the 3G and 4G switching and reception issues and they're working on an update to be released first week of january to fix the problem. Good thing the return window is extended to January 15th cause this crap will be going back if this problem isn't fixed. I have no bars to 1 bar of 3G that barely works or doesn't at all where my friend has full strength 4G running 30 down and 8 up on his Rezound. This is complete bull crap! I sacrificed my new every 2 $100 and left month to month that i've been on for 3 years for this phone and I'm PISSED!

I've ordered a Galaxy Nexus for a good price but the place I ordered from has it backordered until mid-January. (Conveniently or inconveniently post CES depending on how you look at it given all the hot new devices that will be announced.)

I'm sporting a Droid X now and I really love the idea of an open, stock Google device. I loved tinkering with my DX at first, playing with Tasker, etc., especially compared to my wife's "magical" fruit phone-the only thing her work would support. Having said that, I increasingly just want something that works.

After looking at the reviews on this thread, and all over the internet to be honest, I'm more than a little nervous about all the posts regarding people having to return two or three devices to actually get a working phone, missing features I'm used to like built-in DLNA, or possible deficiencies with the camera, call quality, and signal strength. (How is it review can be so frustratingly different?!)

To make a short story long,
1) Would folks recommend the Galaxy Nexus? In order, I actually need/want to use it as a telephone, a camera, and to stream video to my home theater, and then all the general Google Apps stuff.

2) Given the number of returns people have made, should I bite the bullet and just buy from a Verizon store, for $130 more, so I can easily return it with minimal downtime if I get a dud?

Thanks!

I bought my nexus on Thursday this week. I was also getting nervous based on some of the problems that had been reported. I have to say that I have been very pleasantly surprised with my phone. The 4G signal has been fine, the battery life over my first two days is similar to my Dinc, and my overall experience has been great. I'm hoping the pending updates will make it even better.

1) In places like these forums, and reviews in general, people who are unhappy with a phone are much more likely to be vocal about it. A lot less people who are enjoying a product are willing to take the time to go online and complain about it... thus problems here are grossly misrepresenting of the phone as a whole, so take them with a grain of salt.

2) Unfortunately Amazon had a bunch for sale yesterday but it's on back order again. Keep watching and if they get them back in stock you may be able to grab one and cancel your other order.

3)Based on what you've stated and having the camera as the 2nd most important thing, I would suggest looking at something like the Rezound. DLNA can be solved with apps (not as good as native, but still manageable), and the camera may be improved with software updates, but right now based on reviews I would say the Rezound has the better camera.

What I liked
-Over all physical design. Sleek/Thin/Smooth
-Screen is a beaut
-ICS is a very nice upgrade to Gingerbread
-Phone charges in a relatively short period of time
-UI is very zippy
-Unlocked bootloader is of course an Android tinkerers dream

What I didn't like
-Battery, I find how quickly the battery drains unacceptable, even with the extended battery.

-Signal, I have read the articles about "Signal Bars" and frankly there is a huge difference between low signal displayed and no data connection what so ever. I have owned 4 android phones and a iPhone4 and none of them have experienced such horrible reception in southern AZ. I went to Tucson for new years and had 4 bars LTE and it would not hold a signal. The constant switching between 4G, 3G, and no data at all drained roughly 10 percent of my battery an hour while I slept. Now I am back on my Bionic and I am seeing 4 bars where I only saw 2 (or none) on my GNEX and able to stream HQ video in my living room.

-Streaming, I was unable to stream more than an hour of anything (Tune In Radio, Google Music, etc) on my GNEX. I would assume this is because of the bad reception it was receiving. Wifi signal seemed to die out when screen went to sleep, and yes I double checked Keep Wifi Alive. Streaming seemed to work better on 3G but the signal was so inconsistent that you shouldn't expect it to stream for long.

-Camera is decent but for a "high end" phone I was disappointed. I would give anything for the versatility of my iPhone4 5MP over my GNEX 5MP. Zero shutter lag with a bad sensor means a can take more bad pictures faster.

-Speaker is too quiet, I'm not down with buying an app to improve the audio of a 300 dollar on contract phone.

-Navigation voice sounds like the woman has been beat and is crying compared to other devices.

Summary
Now your travels may differ, I may have had a bad unit, but now I am currently back on my Bionic using the latest firmware and I am loving life again. What good is a beautiful screen if I am always plugged into a wall and I never have a data connection. If it is such a great phone and as "future proof" as the hype had us believing then in a few months I will try it again. If not then I will get the next best thing. Unlocked Rezound anyone?

tl;dr - Great design, great screen, great UI. Sub par battery even for an LTE device, speaker too quiet, poor performance of Wifi radio and cellular radio, camera is disappointing

Just got my GNex!

I'm curious to see how the battery performs, especially considering I've read VERY mixed reviews on this very forum. Some people claiming to get 14+ hours with moderate to heavy usage and others claiming the battery life sucks. Will be interested in seeing what type of life I get. I'm in Baltimore so will be using 4G/LTE.

Cheers to my fellow Nexuns and thanks to everyone who has participated in this forum... some real gems of GNEX threads.

Battery life for me has been both great and horrible but I did just receive my extended battery so I don't think I will have any complaints anytime soon

It seems to vary from 6 to 14 hours in 4G for most people, assuming moderate usage. I think it depends on the location and how apps are used. I'm somewhere in between around 11 hours in 4G.

But there is interesting battery tip discussion here about WiFi trick and battery saver app.

Stay away from 3 apps and you'll conserve a lot - words with friends, hanging with friends and (unfortunately) the Phandroid app. When I run those I get about 5-6 hours. Without them I can get 9 or so.

I'm happy with my Nexus so far, but one thing that bothers me is the way widgets are treated. So many apps have 5-10 widgets and I wish there were a way to either delete some of the widgets or to put the widgets in folders within the app drawer. I know that Nova launcher allows you to put them back in a list, but it would be even better if they were groupable or selectively deletable.

I also wish the app drawer scrolled up and down like my DInc did, and not side-to-side. Just seems easier that way.

I guess these comments are really ICS related....

I have to agree. As beautiful as the rest of ICS is, the widgets look awful in the app drawer and navigation is a pain. Even creating the option to make them a list would help.

amen the phandroid app is broken :( and its sad keeps the processor at 100% and the only way to kill the app is to reboot the phone

I just have to say reading through this. I know there are a lot of mixed reviews, but it just surprised me what some are willing to put up with after paying $299 for a device and the monthly contract to go with it. To each their own, but it just surprises me.

All 3 can be adjusted for better battery performance. Change to notification/update time in Settings for the "with friends" apps and you can turn off sync in the Phandroid app.

I do. It definitely helps. I just know not to use them often if I want conservation to happen. :)

I think some people know that the minor quibbles like widgets scrolling by page, and not grouped into bunches, will likely be addressed with updates, custom ROMs, or alternative launchers.

The major complaints like battery life and/or data dropping problems are larger in the grand scheme and are more questionable to tolerate, although people posting about complete loss of data for extended periods of time might do well to exchange their device before blanketing the G-Nex entirely in the suck category, or alternatively, keeping the unit despite the problems.

Also, sometimes some people complain about something and don't even know (or ask if) they can do something about it. An example right here is the Zynga 'With Friends apps as well the Phandroid apps. These apps are what they are. With Friends apps are a drain on all Android devices due to poor coding. Set the synchronization to none or once daily (which is what I use). Phandroid app I've never used on any device, but it looks like you can turn the sync off completely. If it's an ICS problem, give them some time to update the app.

The way the stock email app behaves on Android has been well documented and persists. Sometimes I wonder if google doesn't make the app better in order to push people to gmail.

No device is without minor quibbles. It's the major ones that every person needs to ask themselves if they can live with for 20 months.

The screen is gorgeous. After that the hardware doesn't make the phone a leader. Its slower than the wife's Rezound (yes stock 4.0 vs stock Sense). The camera? May as well bust out a tablet and some charcoal, you'll get a better picture faster. Zero lag shutter doesn't mean much if the camera wont actually take a picture. May work fine outside during the bright of day and your subject doesn't move. But in low light? Forget it. Thing wont even focus sometimes.
After paying $300 for the flagship Android phone should you really have to download an app just to be able to hear it? I would say no. Though the Rezound's speakers wasn't really any clearer, it was at least louder.
As some people have said there is a heat issue after what seems like just a little use, but its relegated to a quadrant and not over the entire back of the phone.
Other than that the software is great, not mind blowing, but then again I have a honeycomb tablet so it wasn't that new. So yes I've had issues with apps not working, fine, its to be expected. Only the camera has forced close on me.

I've already asserted how great I prize this phone.
I only have a doubt: wifi seems at the same level of the crap I had before; I was expecting some improvement

Thats stupid... :) I think if your close enough to a girl to get a up skirt shot it's not going to be the shutter sound that gives you away.

Feature, not a bug. It's for privacy reasons -- to prevent certain kinds of photos being taken, like upskirt shots. There was a big fuss over this kind of stuff in Japan a few years back, and the "feature" spread throughout the world.

Developers, however, can disable the sound with custom firmware. (Actually, it might not even need a new ROM - there's probably another way to disable it. But it definitely will require root at the least.)

I've had mine since launch morning.

My only complaint (minor) is the speaker loudness .. it really is not that loud. I do have to make sure I use LOUD ringtones so i don't miss calls in the car or walking outside.

Camera is ok for me. I have an SLR for serious pic taking.

Everything else has been great; reception (which i was worried about) is fine, the display is gorgeous, and the battery life is BETTER than I ever expected. I don't use too many widgets (minimalist) so the phone totally flies through tasks.

ICS took a little getting used too, but now I love it. I would HIGHLY recommend using Nova Launcher so you can tweak various visual things. It's just a slightly modified version of the stock launcher, but you get more control.

To root or not to root? kinda holding off for now. i always rooted to get rid of bloat or get back to vanilla android. . . but, that is no longer an issue with the Nexus!! So, i'll probably root in a couple months..but for now I'm good.

The Rezound was my backup plan if I didn't like the Nexus. But .. after a few weeks .. I love the Nexus.

just my .02

Greetings all,

I have both the SGSII and the GN,

HARDWARE -

To start with the GN is a great piece of hardware.
design, battery, size, screen, specs, you name it... so is the SGSII

However...

- Storage
the lack of MicroSD Slot and only 16GB is a complete fail for me,
when I purchased the phone I ASSUMED it had MicroSD slot,
major fail on my behalf, it reminded me of the iPhone 3 i ASSUMED had many standard features available at the time
I just didnt think to check if it had these STANDARD, available features.
I mean, WTF?

For this I give the SGSII the prize.

-Display
Great size and still practical, great res, but barely noticeable with general mobile usage....
...obviously one over the SGSII

-Camera
SGSII 8MP... GN 5MP... and a noticeable difference when displayed on a PC, especially after crop and editing to compose image.... this may not be a necessity for some.
but....
....SGSII again.

Even though the GN hardware specs are brilliant, no MicroSD card slot and only 16GB.... SGSII takes the cake, even though the screen is slightly smaller and lower res, the noticeable difference is negligible, and the ability to expand memory for movies and music is invaluable.

SGSII wins

OS-
SGSII Android 2.3 Gingerbread
NG Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

Well to be honest this has been the biggest factor in my judgement of the GN, other then the obvious aesthetic and system performance improvements, which will soon be available to the SGSII, I have found NG ICS some what... empty, like the apps draw. Obviously this is Google providing a platform for developers to create data and economic remuneration for themselves, But i feel like I have some what of an empty canvas. The outrageous and unnecessary permissions required on many apps are totally unacceptable, and to provide them to some obscure nobody developer to do who knows what with, is just rude. ICS is an app platform, requiring many installs to get standard functionality, where as the SGSII comes raring to go.

If this is what is to be expected from ICS on the SGSII, there is no chance of me upgrading.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

GN ICS has FAILED to provide many features, out of the box, that I had become a custom to and use regularly with SGSII Ginger Bread, with out providing an alternative.

I will begin with the fails....

NO...
-default FILE MANAGER/BROWSER, SGSII has.
-default TASK MANAGER/KILLER, SGSII has.
-'Set As' ringtone, from file manager/browser or music player, must copy file to ringtone folder, SGSII has.
-Swype keyboard, SGSII has, and SlideIT sucks comparatively.
-Default NAVIGON, Google maps is great, but NAVIGON does NOT require internet access, SGSII has.
-Notification Bar Switch at top, SGSII does.
- Equilizer, features or settings in Music Player, SGSII has.

I have no doubt, having had the phone such a short time and finding many practical and functional deficiencies in the Galaxy Nexus, I will find more issues to address and post about.

If the SGS3 is an improvement upon the SGSII using ICS, and still including many of the practical and functional features, then holding out for the SGS3 is my suggestion.

When comparing the 2 and considering the overall feel and functionality of the unit, I have to make a tough decision and say the SGSII is an overall more practical and functional phone, out of the box.

Before all you tech heads start sprooking to ROOT the phone or promoting an endless list of suitable apps, I would like to remind you that i am talking about 'out of the box' condition here. ROOT is not suitable, practical or even recommended to many many users, and as my phones are still under warranty, and having had to replace my SGSII once, due to a random dead pixel, must remain factory until the warranty period has ceased.

To all you that have managed to complete this post, thank you and I hope to hear any comments ;)

Use widgetsoid for toggles... Its better then touchwiz, or sense because u can add custom apps.. Like Flashlight I have on mine and Audio pro.

I ordered mine from Verizon's website the morning of the 15th, so I've had it for a few weeks now. I'm definitely in the "love it" category.

First, I was pleasantly surprised that it was delivered on the 16th, even though the tracking estimate was for 12/19 (the following Monday). I had it in hand on the 17th (had it delivered to my parent's house since I didn't want it left outside the door of my apartment).

I upgraded from the OG Droid, which was my first smart phone, so a lot of my wonderment with the Nexus would probably be the same upgrading to any of the recent phones in terms of dual-core processor, RAM, internal memory, screen size, how light weight and thin it is (without a slide out keyboard). But that being said:

What I love about the phone:
-huge screen, with a great display
-4G speeds (when Verizon doesn't have an outtage)
-unlocking the bootloader was very easy (using the instructions provided from links here) and rooting even easier (with one-click)
-stock Android, and I really like ICS so far
-front facing camera (tried Skype on it using 4G and it was pretty good, at least no worse than using Skype in general can sometimes be)
-lightweight and thin (especially compared to the Droid)
-lot of different LED colors available (again, compared to my OG Droid)
-runs very fast and smooth thanks to the dual-core processor and 1GB RAM
-Google Wallet (pending actual use). I have it loaded and got the free $10 credit, but haven't had an opportunity to try it yet and I didn't want to waste it just to try it. Looking forward to it though.

What could be better, but I can live with:
-The placement of the power and volume buttons. Sometimes I accidentally take a screen shot.
-speaker phone could be louder, and sometimes it seems the person on the other side can't hear me too well either

I've ready complaints about the camera, but using the touch-to-focus, the pictures look good enough to me (I have a point-and-shoot Cannon, but since getting it I mainly used my OG Droid and this is at least as good if not better). I haven't tried the Chase app to take a picture of a check for deposit yet (not sure when I'll get a check to try it with) but if that works then its definitely an improvement over my Droid.

Battery life seems at least comparable to my Droid, possibly better since I had to overclock my Droid towards the end to get more out of it and I'm able to underclock my Nexus and it still runs smooth. I also have a charger at home, work, in my car, and keep the one that came with the phone to take with me when needed, so I'm not too worried. Only time it might not last is on a plane (with no USB charging in the seats, which is most domestic flights).

I kept my OG Droid for over 2 years and I can see holding on to my Galaxy Nexus even longer, especially if this ends up being Verizon's only Nexus phone.

Hello!

I've had my GNex a couple of weeks. I was one of those knuckleheads pestering the Bestbuy kids for the launch date for a couple of months. I got the second phone right off the truck and felt like a kid on my birthday when I finally got it into my hot little hands.

This is my first REAL smartphone although I had an LG Prime for a couple of weeks and with that became quite a bit acquainted with the whole droid (quasi) 4G thing, which I have to say just knocks my socks off.

For the longest time we had gophones because we didn't want to commit to monthly payments and weren't into all this cell phone/iphone hoopla. But due to a terrible storm that knocked our power out for a week, we had to join the 21st century.

Found out about the Gnex while messing around online and when I read about it and all these possibilities I returned the LG Prime pronto, before my 30 Bestbuy days were up. I figured I held out this long, I'll just hold on and got myself a $5 gophone and a very nice ASUS tablet and patiently bided my time. As of today, I am loving it.

Even though I know almost nothing, it's clear this is not a perfect thing. But I've been around computers for a while so I know none of them are, especially something very new.

And one thing my Baby has that even my husband's sexy little Charge doesn't is the ability to dump every single app and truly recreate and personalize this little droid. I like that this is MINE. I have no use for what I have no use for. And that one thing - all those extraneous memory sucking crapapps drove me nuts on the LG.

I agree giving permission to every tom dick and harry developer to track me morning noon and night does not seem right, and in fact creeps me quite a lot, and bears watching. I am very sparse in my app accumulating and keep an eye on what's doing what. And why. I keep trying to learn. I'm into being free and UNMONITORED. This may not be possible but that's my goal. Even with a droid.

ICS is lovely. For me interface is fast and very okay. Not quite so fabulous as I'd like but again...this is new to me so I'm not really knowing what it can do vs what I expected it to do/look like/how it should handle.

Speaker sound stinks. I installed the free version of Volume+, couldn't find the free full version so I'll live with it not blasting it's crappy sound to all the world, because I think these little speakers ARE extremely crappy/tinny.

Just put in some of my music and I'm trying to figure the Bluetooth/music thing, which I think I saw in one of the threads is a "known issue" so that's one glitch that I'm hoping will be resolved relatively quickly. I'm not into Google playing mother to me and my music. Honestly I have my reservations about Google period, knowing they were perfectly okay helping the Chinese government monitor the Chinese people. I'm feeling like so much of these devices infringe on my privacy and how I interact. This is a serious issue.

I'm a big believer in my GNex's state of the art superiority and do not want to see it falling short. Add to this the pressure of my husband laughing at the Baby whenever his Charge beast comes up to or acts like it's kicking my Baby's ass. Very unpleasant. His is cute, though, I will give him that. But mine is definitely superior. And bigger. BIGGER. :)

In fact, size is larger than I expected. I have relatively small hands so I was glad to encase the Baby in rubber/plastic to get a better handle on it. It always felt as if it was about to jump out of my hand. Or get grabbed and run off with! I was very paranoid in the supermarket that first week. it felt like shopping wearing diamonds. Quite weird.

Most of the negatives are superficial piss in the bucket. I think this is a supersmart smartphone, incredibly stylish, huge screen - nearly tablet sized, great speed, fabulous interface, lots of but not enough apps, pretty reliable. Maybe I'm living in a fools paradise, but I'm okay with that, being an old fool.

Glad to have a place to find answers to my questions. So Happy New Year to you all,
Cynthia
