Official: GPS fix is being pushed out

I just hope that the fix is something other than the fixes suggested by people on this forum as I have tried the fix listed here in several different ways and none fixed my lock issue. Still takes anywhere from 5 - 10 minutes to get lock.

Question: I tried the fix from XDA Developers where you change the SUPL/CP Settings and other Settings, in order to get some improvement on the GPS functionality. Should I now change those chages back to the original state in order to take full advantage of this OTA fix, or will the fix simply overwrite these changes? What do you think? Sremick, you did a great job for us all.

Same thing here, "No Updates Available", didn't get the subsequent message about no other update attempts for 24 hours this time though.

re: root

Can you simply de-root, OTA update and re-root? Or does the attempted push down flag you as not applicable?

I'm assuming this will be packaged up into a non-OTA update soon after it's released.

I only tested my GPS once and it seemed to work fine, but I understand it's inconsistent.

Until the nature of the fix is known, it's impossible to say what will get overwritten/changed.

If I were you, I'd probably revert to stock settings to play it safe. If they're making huge improvements for you (many people don't get any improvement), then you could ride as you are for now and not revert until your phone notifies you that an update is available. And even then you could wait to see what people on the forum are saying who have already tried the update.

I'm pretty sure the update isn't forced, and that you're simply notified with an option to install at your convenience.

I was tempted to try my social skills on Samsung too but since I don't have a direct business relationship with them, and I'm not an AT&T tech, I doubt they'd be as forthcoming to me.

Since my last post I have successfully unrooted and then rerooted. It is insanely easy to do on this phone. My plan is to unroot once I get the notice that the update is available, do the update, and then reroot.

mind sharing details on how? Also will u lose root required sideloaded apps when you unroot?

EDIT: I just read the vibrant unroot thread on XDA, same method here?

Yes. I downloaded a terminal emulator from the market and typed the following.

su (enter)
rm -r /system/app/Superuser.apk (enter)
rm -r /system/xbin/busybox (enter)
rm -r /system/bin/su (enter)

I also rebooted to see if it would restore the deleted files, but it did not.

The only app I tried that required root while I was unrooted was root explorer, and it said that it could not find root, but was not deleted from my phone.

sounds somewhat fishy (from Samsung) as they would have (or should have) let AT&T know this as it would be going over their network. This would also let AT&T educate people calling in with this problem that a fix is on the way.

I hope its real though, the GPS is pitiful.

I smell fake.

I actually know the OP from at least one other messageboard, and he's pretty solid individual and helpful on technical subjects (networking, etc.). Just based on my previous exposure, I would say +his+ post is legitimate and it doesn't sound like his source would have any reason to fabricate anything. Of course there could be misinformation further upstream (at Samsung), but I'm going to be positive about it until I hear otherwise :)

Yeah, I think it was just good PR on the part of Samsung. They twittered to me this morning that they don't know if/when they'll release an update.

they dont know IF they will release an update?

This thing is going back if I dont hear a confirmation from samsung that an update is coming out. If this is a hardware problem, they better do something and not some blanket crap like Apple.

I heard it was a satellite enhancement attachment:

I'm pretty stoked!

I did not pinpoint anyone as BSer. These call centers - in general a mere mortal can rarely reach any truth via those channels. The chain of phone reps, managers, and managers' managers - they confuse each other, and it is not even in their domain to know what some tech team somewhere upstream will decide. Besides AT&T would have to test and approve this fix.

Guys its safe to say that marketing, PR, and customer service people are the most unknowledgeable people on the planet when it comes to stuff like this. The only people I trust for information are product managers & engineers. And unless this update is confirmed by more than one party (and not just one Samsung twitter account), I'm not believing it until I see an update released.

I don't doubt the OP, but he heard it from AT&T who heard it from SAMSUNG Tech support, who heard it from some Manager, who was told by???

I just think it is quite likely that things get lost in translation and everyone wants this fixed so it is easy to think and listen for the bright side.

That said, I hope this is it!!!

Oh trust me, you don't have to explain that to me! I've been around the block a few times :D

I was just trying to give you at least a little level of confidence with the original poster since he (and I) and quite a few other folks on here are relatively new members.

After the Apple shenanigans, all the cell companies are getting a little crazy, so I wouldn't put it past someone in management to spread an update rumor to quell the noise and try to stop a backlash before it's a big deal.

I hope to see a video press release of the CEO of Samsung waving an iPhone in the air declaring GPS technology isn't a perfect science!!

I believe (maybe a fool's belief) that Samsnung will resolve this very quickly. That does not mean it is going to happen today, but more likely in the next week or so. AT&T is going to be faster than usual because they already have had fun with iPhone 4. Samsung has a lot riding on the release of this smart phone and they know it.

Yeah, sucks to be the new guy and have info you feel like you should share. Why should people believe you? *sigh*

I figured it was better to toss it out there than keep it to myself. If it's true, it'd be the bigger crime to not share it.

And like I said... if it doesn't come to pass, it's not because I was BSing you. And from the nature of my conversation with the AT&T tech support guy, I don't think he was BSing me. But we'll see I suppose... heh. Here's hoping...

Sremick, we all hope just as much as you do. Still I have little trust in some random minuscule att phone support person who miraculously is in the know on the big corporate plans and rollouts.
