Official GSM Hero 2.1 Thread

Hey guys, I've just got a quick question... Will the 2.1 update come with some kind of security update making rooting/custom ROM impossible/more difficult?
Looks like 2.1 will be the last update Hero users receive... officially anyway.

Meh, too little too late. I'm now seriously considering an iPhone over another Android handset, at least I know it's good for at least a couple of upgrades at release, rather than waiting 7months and still not had either of the last 3updates. hTC have lost a customer, and probably lost Android one too.

hey mate,
not need to do that.
I got my hero just 3 months ago, and I really liked it... but I know that in a matter of a few more months I'll get a Nexus One and problem solved.
I'll have the Android that I like and ALWAYS up to date ; )

The only Android I would consider would be one that didn't have any tampered with OS, like hTC/SE and others, that seem to mean the upgrade path has an extra hurdle.

So I'll see what's on offer in a few months that has decent hardware, by then the N1 will be 'old', but the iPhone will still be quite fresh.

Most probably! Don't upgrade yet if you want to stay with the custom/rooted ROMs.

As the upgrade for the Sprint Hero was on the 21st May which was on a Friday and now they are saying today is an upgrade for the GSM Hero which is also a Friday then its more likely to start today as roomers suggest or maybe next Friday (last Friday in the first half of the month so should be the 11th June I think) if there are any more delays.

It's going to be a long update process if they are only doing it on Fridays :D

Seriously, they've already kicked off the updates today, unless there is a major problem I can't see why this can't be a simple procedure....oh wait it's HTC we're talking about :p

The Taiwanese ROM has English Language Support It's over on XDA Developers now.

Everyones loving it and say batterys awesome, super fast ROM.

I've just sent 3 an email regarding the 2.1 upgrade for my hero, asking what their timescale is for getting it out to us,

"10 BLOODY DAYS":mad::mad:

About this update, a lot of sources are saying it'll update from 2.73.751.13, I've just looked at mine, and it's 2.73.405.5, will that make much of a difference? Thanks in advance :)

Yes. The update will only work if your phone is Taiwanese (aka build no. 2.73.751.13).
