Official GSM Hero 2.1 Thread

So one week till the say it has been delayed till August

lol I'm not even thinking about this update anymore, I;m more excited that ppl are developing froyo for the Hero... if it's 450x faster than 2.1 then that's much more interesting.

HTC doesn't care about Hero owners I accept that. I also accept that Motorola, Dell, and many other ppl will provide Android phones... so when I'm looking for a new phone I'll just keep in mind past experiences with platform providers.

... so when I'm looking for a new phone I'll just keep in mind past experiences with platform providers.

For sure, we all will.

The problem is HTC, at the moment at least, are making the best Android hardware so it would be a case of "cutting off our noses to spite our face" and they know that.

What HTC have to be careful of is, like someone else pointed out, ending up like Nokia and just over-saturating the market and the quality starts to drastically slip. That's when people will stop buying their products.

As for this June date, I, like others, am not even thinking about it because of the inevitable :D

HTC sent me an email stating it was the first week of June we recieve the preliminary update to prep our Heroes and then like 2 weeks after we get the full update.

'prep our phones'??? what exactly do they mean by that. does that mean i finally get to talk to my phone and tell it that i love it but its about to get the biggest upgrade since tv went from analogue to digital...I think my phone has been let down by HTC too often now...i wont prep it until i see the actually message telling me to download 2.1

On another note..for those sprint users who have 2.1 already, was it worth the wait?

2.2 is out for nexus and hero is still struggling to get the 2.1! apparently 2.2 is 450% faster then 2.1!! HTC wake up! Pls dont dissapoint your fellow HERO fans twice! surprise us! get 2.2 out QUICK!

On another note..for those sprint users who have 2.1 already, was it worth the wait?

The few times I've ventured over to the sprint forums it seems a lot of people have issues with 2.1 actually. So who knows how ours will do.

Sprint is an American network. Their phones are a bit different to ours and so their 2.1 update won't work on our phones, unfortunately.

Well, for those of you asking about how the Sprint update went.. Well it looks like it's going south quick.

Trust me, just root your phone, get a rom and be done with it. Most 2.1 roms for the hero out there are MUCH BETTER than the stock 2.1 update Sprint gave out, and will be better than ANY update HTC puts out.
I'm not even on sprint, I am on a small North American carrier, which uses the exact same phone yet we're getting just as much run around as you GSM folk, so I finally just gave in and rooted.

Now I have 2.1 and all these things you can't do unless you root:
Ability to customize/add anything I want
WIFI tethering! How sweet is that?!
of course root terminal access

And that's just to name a few things. Think about it. The Hero is HTC's purposely orphaned child, and hackers are it's new found parents. *And these parents are way cooler*

The Hero was a flagship, but now HTC has a new flagship phone, and now that Google has announced updating is going to slow down drastically with O.S's this tells me, this whole android kick v.1 (i.e. any phone < 1ghz) was just a test run. I believe they had good intentions but when Apple decided to start bitching, Google got hotfooted and knew they had to start pushing out some tougher minimum android specs to compensate and see that they get on top.

The real downside to this? We are just a FRACTION of the people who have these phones. Most people who got these phones don't even know about 2.1 let alone 2.2, and they just think these new phones coming out are totally different than the hero's and g1's and such that's out now, and they will buy into the craze and so the process repeats.. Unfortunately cell phones have not gained up to PC status where you buy one, upgrade as much as you like and it still works as long as the hardware supports it. Bottom line, get root, get roms and to hell with HTC.

Since the official 2.1 update for the Hero haven't even been released yet, how can you claim that rooted ROMs are better than HTC's?
You might be right, but for now no one knows how the official 2.1 update performs.

Interesting post hexskrew, and what you say makes sense, but HTC have been architects of their own backlash.

Business practice and politics aside, to bypass two major software milestones reasoning they wanted to give us the latest and greatest release, then make us wait the best part of six or seven months with no official word is bad PR to say the least.

Hell it still remains to see if we will get 2.1.

Had they (HTC) just given the Hero the 1.6 or 2.0 update, like they should have done, then turned round and said "that's your lot", most of us would have accepted that. Instead they have chosen to give us the complete run-around.

You do have a point, but I am speculating what I have seen from the Sprint 2.1 update. Don't get me wrong, I do feel that it was hastily put out, but then it makes me wonder if they will ever come out with it at all for everyone else. The reason why I say this is this has happened before on previous HTC phones.

And to Red Skies: Yes. You have a very good point and are completely correct. The thing about it for me is the fact that after all this time they have not completed all the work to get sense to work properly? I mean... It's just a lame excuse really, especially when you look at all the other home theme apps out there that come out with updates and releases sometimes monthly.

Even if they just straight up coped out and said 'Here is the update version, but without sense! Do not update unless you can use it without our Sense technologies. Hopefully we will have a small update to add our Sense 2.x technologies and widgets to this update as soon as we fix the development issues we are experiencing at this time.' then we would have been happy. I highly doubt there would be so much negative vibes around HTC now if they had done this as opposed to the crap they are putting us through.

Sure there would be people who yap about it not having Sense on the update, but who could really argue if it's the update but without all the eye candy that you can just add yourself anyway? Honestly I am starting to notice that sense is really not such a big deal anymore, and it actually hinders a lot of users who are not so savvy about the platform from using better and more unique styling for their phones which is what is supposed to be part of the Android platform anyway.

I totally agree with you. As far as I'm concerned any hardware that hasn't received updates in more than six months should be considered abandoned. So if HTC decides NOT to upgrade Hero to 2.1 as they had promised I wouldn't be surprised.

Well.. June's coming up.. we'll just have to wait and see.. If nothing happens I'm rooting and staying away from HTC products in all eternity ;-)

Waiting patiently for htc and telus. If it is like other times, I think we are screxxx. I think we should start raising hexxxx and telling HTC we've had it. Lets just root our phones open them up and changed providers freely with the best support and best price.

You know this is in fact very true. I myself being on Cellular South, and the phone doesn't use a smart card, all other phones I have had have been stuck on CS because you just simply couldn't get any other software or even a mindless hack to work on it to change providers, but now... We own the phone in every possible way! It all comes down to the PRL PRI and radio files, so I could very VERY easily hop this thing on sprint's network or on other networks :D

HTC never changes and never will be...I dealed with it all the past 8 years starting with the first windows mobile device...and it never ever update an old device officially to a newer OS!

I used HTC Himalaya, BlueAngel, Magician, Universal, TyTn, TyTn II and Raphael...HTC never updates any of those devices to include new software...it updates the ROM from time to time to solve some problem only!

All I did is using unofficial updates and that's what happening now with Android...but using a very fast changing OS like Android is not like WM so you have to be a super patient or you have two choices:

1.use unoffical updates ;)
2.buy HTC devices from Google...

and I did the second one...I ended up replacing the Hero with Nexus...

Same here. I heard all the wonderful words from

http://www.mobile-phones-uk.org.uk/htc-hero.htm

and was existed when I heard about 2.1 being released on the Hero at the start of the year.

Which made me buy the phone and say wonderful words to everybody (as it is a great phone and OS), but the business side of it is a little let down. But I dont think I will get a HTC again.
