Even excluding the possibility of companies making interchangeable backplates, wouldnt you want a case for the phone anyway? Regardless of choosing the N1 or the Incredible, I'm not going to break this phone. I'm 100% getting a case. Waited far to long for this phone to get it, and then break it. A case will take care of the back - I'm no longer fretting over the red cover.

I personally can't stand having a case on my phone. I have done well with phones to this point so I trust myself not to break it. The only time I've broken one is accidentally hitting my hip on a pool table and my phone was between my body and the table. It cracked the front screen (flip phone), but it was still useable and all.

I'm starting to lean towards the feeling that the Incredible won't be out until April...I'm thinking 15 days til N1 comes to see us....I really wish the N1 had sense, I'd be all over that thing.

If you're the adventurous sort you could root the N1 and put the Desire ROM on it. But if we don't know the launch date of the Incredible by the 23rd odds dont favor even April.

15 days until a Google announcement that the N1 is available for sale...15 days until a Verizon HTC Incredible announcement at CTIA, then a week or so more until the release of the HTC Incredible...based on previous experiences

Point noted on the root, and I am rather adventurous in a general sense, but I'm relatively afraid that I'll either brick the phone or it won't run as well as it would on the Incredible. Thus why I'm here and still waiting haha.

Waitaminute... I've been reading every post, but maybe I missed this. Has this been confirmed or is this just more speculation on what we "think" will happen at CTIA? Remember what we "thought" would happen at MWC...

Although I prefer to be a realist (that leans toward pessimism) I really hope that you are right on this one.

If there is only a couple of weeks difference between launches I'll go with the Incredible (this of course means it will be 3 to 4 weeks). But I could be happy with the N1, I liked the Droid except for its 3 home panels and replacement apps kept FC'ing on me.

If they don't at least announce the specs of the Incredible at CTIA, the Verizon execs better sleep with one eye open.

I'm not telling you to root because I've never done it (only had a Droid for 2 weeks). But if you follow the step by step directions and use one from one of the more renown ROM makers (like cyanogen) you should be fine. The bigger problem would be a possible void of warranty. There are videos of the Desire ROM on the N1 I believe:

YouTube - HTC Sense on the Nexus One (Desire ROM)

Between the members on this forum, people over at Xda-Developers, and Modaco; you shouldn't have any problems rooting. I'm a member at all three and everyone seems very friendly with answers to almost all questions about rooting. If I get the N1, I will definitely root. From the general consensus, it looks like it only takes about 15 minutes to root if you know what your doing. The control you get over customization is ridiculous.

I will likely root my N1 and load a sense rom on it. XDA has a very large HTC dev community and many threads and tutorials to walk you through this process. I was very hesitant when i did this to my XV6800 but after the first time it becomes fairly simple. It will void the warranty but if you have insurance you will be fine.

March 23rd has been mentioned for the N1 ever since you could see Verizon on the order page. The Incredible is already in the inventory system. It can't be that long till launch. Isn't it only supposed to be like a month from inventory to launch?

Neowin.net - Google's Nexus One coming to Verizon on March 23

^^ Think the March 23rd rumor only started sometime in the end of February. Its a fairly recent rumor. Same with the Incredible inventory listing though.

The March 23 N1 date has been around since the first week of February - maybe as early as the last week of January. I can find the evidence if needed. :)

If I remember correctly, I believe the first March 23rd rumors seem to have come from Leo Laporte.

Maybe. Perhaps I have something about Vodafone in my mind. But its something about a launch of the n1 2 days into spring and it was almost the same day that the N1 launched.
Anyways CTIA is as good as any place to launch the phones. Short of invites going out to a Verizon presser slightly before CTIA (google gave a weeks notice for the N1 launch) March 23 would be the most logical of dates.

I was looking at the CTIAwireless website and Google isn't going to be there as an exhibitor. They don't have a booth according to the website. Is that weird or normal? Wouldn't they want a booth to show off more of the N1 and Android? I mean if the N1 is launched it won't be at the HTC booth (I wouldn't think) and I would think Verizon would really only announce it if they were going to sell it in store (I don't see Verizon making the official annoucement before Google. I do think Google has a keynote speaker for one of the sessions though, so Google will be at the event in some form)... Just a thought. Otherwise Google will annouce it to the media from their HQ or just open it up on the website? Does that make sense? Kind of seems lack-luster doesn't it? I know the phone was already officially annouced, but making it available on VZW is kind of a big deal (especially if it will be sold in stores).

Also, this was mentioned earlier, but Verizon's booth number is 1034 and HTC is 1045, so pretty close. ATT doesn't seem to be anywhere near either and Apple will not be there (surprise, surprise lol).

Google launched the n1 through its own press conference. Could be Verizon makes an announcement simply with someone from Google or HTC there. Google isn't going to make the Verizon launch that big of a thing. So a Verizon announcement makes sense. Its not as if showing off the phone is going to create any additional waves for the N1 because we've already seen it. So it will simply be an announcement and most likely nothing more.

Here is another point... If the main reason for delaying the N1 was/is the screen and they fix it and launch it on 3/23. The Incredible should launch then or real close to that time frame since it uses the same screen. Isn't the rumor for the possible Incredible delay because of the screen (I think I read an article online saying that or titled that)? I think if the N1 is launched on the 23 then the Incredible will be announced officially at CTIA and will be released soon thereafter, as in 1-2 weeks.

I'm pretty sure delay rumors are around for both phones because of the reason you sited, the same screen. Though the multi-touch issue may be bogus. But yes there is no reason outside of Verizon wanting to torture us to have the phones launch too far apart from each other. I only checked with the BB Storm 2, it was 1 month from inventory screen to launch. March 23rd would fit into that time frame for the incredible.

awesome, thanks man.

As for the part in bold..
I know all the articles about the Incredible being in the Inventory Screen, but was it confirmed that it was "Verizon's" inventory screen. I remember looking and see the numbers and name and whatnot, but I don't remember seeing it was a Verizon inventory screen. I didn't see Verizon anywhere. I am sure I missed it, and it is probably obvious as hell, but do we have a confirmation that it is Verizon's inventory system?
