Official HTC ROM 2.73.405.5 Update - Impressions

I'm rather surprised everyone is having so much problems. I updated my phone just Wednesday and have had no issues with the latest HTC Hero firmware. I have a black, unbranded HTC Hero on AT&T.

The HTC clock with weather was dissappointingly limited. Now since the flipclock no longer 'flips' I would have expected a different widget icon that still had the presence of the weather combined with it. Otherwise I can't report any problems, it still being the best phone I've owned.

My experience has been completeley flawless with the new ROM. I have the unlocked (or "unbranded" as some say) UK White model, and I DID NOT went with the non-official rom update, I decided to wait for the official one to appear in the UK page, I downloaded and everything went fine, so I'm also very surprised to see that others are reporting issues.

Totally agree with earlier comment that updating ROM was not without issues esp the lack of a auto or prompted backup for Apps and Data. Fortunately i did view Readme (a first!) and 'My Backup' app worked almost flawlessly (did not restore the contents of my folders though !...just the folder itself.)
Good - Definitely faster and less stutters esp scrolling web pages and contact lists etc
Bad - The messages widget now buggy..only shows 2 of 5....gets confused between chomp SMS and messages.
Some icons when you try to move them actually just create a copy of them (is that a feature i missed before?..could make sense for key apps i suppose)
Ugly - have seen this also discussed on developer site. When browsing in landscape and hit Search key you get a keyboard that is very very jumpy and a notifications bar bouncing around. Have since noted from handbook that HTC expect you to use MENU + click in URL bar (and this does work) rather than using the SEARCH key.

Sorry for long first post but its all so exciting...actually love this phone/OS

Wifi still not fixed - what's the point of the ROM upgrade?!

Any suggestions anyone pls? I use a Belkin FSD9230-4 on Virgin Media in the UK and it drops connections all the time.

HTC support told me to turn of MIMO which I can't!

i believe that the wifi does turn itself of when in 'idle' / 'standby' mode.
i use an app called wifilock.

i havnt had any wifi disconnection problems im virgin in the uk and use a belkin router.

I'm not having any problems with my phone but I've used the Modaco 2.2 ROM. One of the things I've found with people having force close issues is that it is generally caused by not clearing the data out of the phone. I haven't used the official release ROM because it re-writes the HBOOT to prevent access via the official Android debugger utility (comes with the Android SDK).

However, I found the factory reset (which does not restore your stock ROM - it only clears the data) did not clear the data properly, and the old data formats were causing problems with the new ROM - I was getting a force close with com.htc.provider every time WiFi connections were happening. You might try doing a factory reset after flashing the release to see if you can clear the old data residing on the phone (yes - I know the official flash process should pre-clear the data) - this would require a reset up of your phone.

You can also try clearing the data manually, by going to Menu -> Applications -> Manage Applications and then going into each application and clearing data and cache. I did my data clear the quick way by going into the Android debugger mode (adb), USB booting a recovery ROM, and then using the data clear option in that ROM to really clear the data portion. Note that this latter option of USB booting is blocked by the latest release ROM (there is a way around it but again, it's only for the serious hacker). Instructions at xda developers forum if you want to restore a HBOOT that allows you access into your phone's OS.

Cheers.

I have a white sim free hero which only arrived 2 days ago, and I upgraded it last night so haven't had much time to compare and contrast the two versions, but currently the phone seems smooth and responsive.

No problems using My location either with GPS or the mobile cell functionality.

Ye Gods though the upgrade software is kludgey! It took two reboots before the downloaded RUU software would recognise it had an updated image to push to the phone. Once it found that, nothing I could do would make my Windows XP Pro machine update the phone - it would look like it was working and reboot the phone, but the software iteration wouldn't change. It did work on the second try when I used my wife's netbook running XP Home however.

Even the RUU UI is painful - clicking the "Read Documentation" button opens the doc in a new window, but because the RUU application is modal you have to close it to read it!

I understand that HTC has a limited interest in improving the RUU as it's not really it's core product and probably works just about well enough to be useable, but a bit of polish here might do wonders for confidence about the rest of their product suite!

Just installed 2.73.405.5.
Installed fine no problems.
UI seems a little snappier, less lag between screens.

Did a backup of apps and data before hand and restore afterwards.
Didn't realise that backup and restore of apps meant "reinstall" or that I'd lose all my application settings :( All fixed now but a bit of a pain.

Had previously rooted my Hero and new ROM has unrooted it.
Previously I used these instructions : Rooting the HTC Hero/G2..(success) - xda-developers. These no longer work.

When I try to fastboot boot cm-hero-recovery.img, I get a "not allow" error.

Any ideas ?
I'd like to get my root back.

Cheers.

Yup, the bootloader (hboot) has been replaced with one that won't allow (easy) booting of custom recovery images. You'll have to use the FlashRec app to get the new .img onto the device.

See this thread for how Chegs worked around it.
