The one thing keeping me from running a custom rom is the lack of 4G. I live and work in a 4G area and 3G speeds drive me nuts now whenever I go visit my Alma Mater for a weekend.

I live and work in a 4G area and WIMAX is a joke for me, it never worked properly so I don't feel bad losing it on CM10. Sprint's 3G speeds are also terrible so now I am definitely considering my options on other carriers. At least there is no jitter in the latest CM10 update!

Flash the kddi radio and use Straight Talk. As long as your under 3GB a month in data, AT&T's fauxG is faster in than Sprint in a lot of areas. That and it's about $50-60/mo

That's a bummer, I regularly top 6 Mbs while on 4G and 3G is lucky if it hits 1.

Those of you here who are also members on MOTOROLA'S official forum (aptly titled MOTOROLA FORUMS), I urge you to post in the PHOTON section & related ICS threads & voice your concerns/opinions/questions regarding recent events.

Some may ask "What's the point now, what's done is done?"
While that may be true, I think it's worthwhile to voice your concerns & possible future plans regarding MOTOROLA handsets.
I feel it's the least we could do, to repay the grand largesse of MOTOROLA, the presently worthless $100 credit for another phone, which may or may not receive firmware/software updates.

I feel like I've been Palm Pre'd by Motorola. I'm officially done, rooting for the underdog. If it doesn't sell millions it will not be bought by me. They made a choice not to support my less than 2 year old phone, so I have made a choice not to support motorola, heck I might not even support Google after this year.

Yep me too. That's why CM10 won't work me otherwise I would have done it long ago.

Last night when I discovered the news I was strangely calm about it. Now after some sleep, I want to rage against the machine. This really sucks.

To the motor forum I go.

Per my post in the Moto Forums:

I worked for Motorola for 24 years. They were always a very ethical company driven by a very ethical family (The Galvins). I'm sorry to say that I'm seeing things now that let me know that this may have changed. We never strung our customers along and we always kept committments (even if it cost us more than we originally anticipated. I believe incompetence made the decision to tell the Atrix 4G base that ICS was coming 3Q12 and then somebody realized that its cost didn't support the update. Motorola keeps the profits and we're stuck with a deadend phone. So now, like many others, I have lost my trust in this company. I saw the "original" changes in the Moto Upgrade News on 9/22/12 a few hours after it was updated. Moto changed the page a few days later with this news without even updating the last update date (kind of like they just wanted to slip in the bad news that should have been given on the 22nd). When a customer loses trust in a company every move is suspect. While Moto may be saving some money by not doing this upgrade, upsetting the number of customers using the Atrix 4G (who will undoubly tell 5 to 10 friends) will be much, much more costly. Maybe Moto just has gotten to the point where their head is you know where and they are oblivious to what their customers feel. Perhaps it's time to move to a company that's hungry for our business and truly cares enough to make good on their commitments. This is truly a sad moment for me personally.......

Well, I'm hoping that they will make a turnaround similar to how samsung did. For the past 5 years, I've purposely stayed away from samsung, due to their poor support reputation in the US. That said, they showed their dedication to right the ship, the past 2 years, which is y I'm convinced they can turn it around. it might not b instant, but they can repair all in a few years if they stay dedicated to improvements all around.

I ask you this, other than the Xoom, Photon Q and "Developers Ed." (I'll go into theDev Ed. in a second). When in Motorola's history have they ever honored their promise to unlock boot loaders? Even on devices that by FCC mandate should have never been locked in the first place. The answer is never.

Now about "Developer Ed." phones. There have been numerous reports of some heavys in the dev community having their brand new Dev. Ed. phones being locked fresh out of the box. The response was more or less "Sorry we can't unlock your phone" in regards to a phone that never should have been locked in the first place.

Source code releases. You may not have an idea as to how many time we as devs have requested source code and it takes months/years to get and in a number of cases it's the wrong source code or is so corrupt that you cannot compile anything from it.

Android Update Alliance. I'm not even going to go into this one.

Photon ICS promise. One of the selling points of the Photon was that it would receive ICS. This was in the sales training guidea and was advertised in a couple places as well. The Photon was EOL'd 6mos after release.

(I could continue to go into more instances where your statement is false however anybody that follows Android already knows what the score is)

I will say this seeing you work at Moto. I have, on a number of occasions tried to reach out to Moto and give them the keys to my kingdom. Many folks and tech news sites thought Webtop was a joke/scam, I improved on it and offered all my work to Moto. Moto's response was to hide traps in each Webtop update or bootloader hash check and ignore the numerous requests by Moto owners worldwide to implement my work. They also have never replied to any contact I have attempted. The closest I have received to any direct contact with Moto was having Mr. Soni +1 a number of alternatives to consider with regards to updates and unlocking bootloaders.

No joke. While I'll stick with Android and Google, I'm through with Moto.

This abandonment of the atrix and photon specifically happened under Google's control of Moto. Sure I and many other people woudn't feel so screwed over if Moto didn't lock the bootloader in the last maintenance update!

Moto gives great support to their VZW line, outside of that avoid them like they plague, that's all I learn.

Well I'm attacking the "Official" Atrix forum again. Enjoy the read. Everybody (except for the receiving end) seems to find these types of rants from me funny for some reason. I still can't figure out why. In case it gets removed (like a number of my post the are)

Your other points may be valid however how "fully developed" are you talking about? THIS has been distributable since, get this, September of last year! Due to the lack of ANY tech blog or news sites reporting on it, it's still not available for OMAP Webtop enabled phones. Canonical has also had a functional demo for some time now.

As far as the Lapdock (and similar) concepts being tossed out. You do realize that the core principle of Webtop and mirroring was commercially pioneered by Toshiba and Dell almost ten years ago. Simply look at the Toshiba E740, VGA output and USB host support. There is also current attempts to make sure this stays in the market with projects like NexPhone. Marketing morons and MBA's making development decisions are mostly to blame for us being no futher along than we were ten years ago.

"almost impossible on a phone to navigate a network file structure " I have been using Samba and NFS for over a year now. Also have had NTFS and EXT working for some time as well. How many other types are needed by the average PC user?

"Real work still requires a pc" Check the link I posted above and let me know what it's missing. I believe you will find that it covers about 90% of average PC usage. Except for a couple base things this was done by one person and almost completely out of pocket.

The tragic part about all this is I had everything together and offered it to Motorola LAST YEAR. All they would have had to have done was checksum sign it and put it in an update.
Webtop didn't fail inspite of Motorola, it failed because of Motorola."

This whole situation really confuses me. Google made all the OEMs agree to support phones for 18 months. Google has now taken over Motorola so how are they getting out of the commitment they forced on manufacturers?

Yes, the mythical Android Update Alliance. I covered this over on xda but try to find ANY press release or, well, anything from Google or manufacturers after June/July of 2011. I've searched for hours and have found nothing other than articles asking "So where is it?". All we got was a "hey lets do this" and nothing more. I don't think it was ever finalized.

(request- Can anybody find any of the Photon ads and internal sales training info that references the ICS Update promise from Sprint/Moto and send them to me.)

I wish to root my phone too and put JB, key lime pie (i don't know if is right the name) and all new updates. all i have is a step by step video from youtube to root, and is very easy, now all i need is the video of to put JB on it, is the only way to have our phones updated.

I'm very disapointed with Motorola, i'm a client since 1998, i think. My current cellphone line i have since 2000, from there till now only one phone wasn't motorola and i regreted, sold it quickly to buy a new motorola. Well after motorola get completely to android worldi'm getting trouble, i'm becoming upset with these phones from they. I'm really considering going to samsung instead coz they seems to respecting more ur clients than moto. If motorola doesn't change this attitudes from 2 years from now tops, i won't buy no motophone no more. Motorola stop this! top phones has to receive updates!

The Photon is a fantastic phone. I love how clear it is when making calls, and the good radios. I love the cardock. I love how I can read the screen in full summer sunlight.

But it would be better with ICS or JB. Because we'll never see those officially, I feel like Moto has stomped on those of us who bought into this phone and stuck by it, users and devs alike. I remember the excitement on various websites when it was announced. I remember eagerly reading posts from the one user who got his hands on a dev version early on and posted first impressions and photos. I remember comparing it to the 3Vo and the ET. The halcyon days.

But it seems Motorola never intended to really support it. It was a one-off experiment away from their home base at Verizon. And now after a few minor updates, they've completely abandoned it and we're left thinking about what could have been.

Oh well. It's still a great phone and a lesson learned for me. I'll credit Moto with that much.

The halcyon days indeed.I've decided to quit my PHOTON/LAPDOCK habit,cold-turkey,at least for a few days & possibly for good.

I just turned in my PHOTON to BEST BUY for warranty servicing (worn USB/HDMI ports + crack in the frame in-between the ports).
I bought the BUY BACK program when I first bought the phone & the clerk told me if a replacement isn't available within 10 days, they'll put me into a phone of my choosing (w/SPRINT,of course).

W/any luck,I'll be rockin' a SGS3 or EVO 4G LTE real soon,w/o any additional cost out of my pocket.

In the meantime,I'm using a loaner phone from BB,the OG EPIC.............

Only thing that's preventing me from taking the Buy Back on the Photon is the unlocked sim to use the Photon overseas.

Exactly. Right now the Photon is literally my only option. I'm pretty well fed up with Sprint at this point due to selection, and Motorola due to well... you know.

<rant>I'm going to seriously consider a move to ATT as soon as contract up. I'll sure miss unlimited data, but sheesh, I can't keep wondering what phone I'll have no choice but to use, or what OS I'll be stuck with. I guess beggars can't be choosers, but is it really so much to ask that I have a flagship, global roaming phone(with REMOVABLE sim card), with update support for more than 12 months? SHEESH. Honestly, with a fully unlocked bootloader FROM Moto or at least OTA JB, I could live in photon bliss for YEARS. WTF MOTOROLA.

ACtually, I'd even be happy with upgrading my phone every 18 months if I felt like Sprint would have a reliable selection in this feature set to choose from every 18 months. Photon Q = FAIL as a replacement to Photon 4g.

Would be stoked if the RAZR I made it to Sprint as a true global phone, but Europe only at this point, and probably will stay that way. USA gets the RAZR M which doesn't look to be global, and the way things typically go will be VZW exclusive. </rant>

Why not T-Mobile, especially w/their unlimited data. My contract w/SPRINT is up 12 months from now & unless SPRINT introduces LTE @ that time, or sooner, I will be re-acquainting myself w/BIG MAGENTA & CARLY(one can dream.....).

Good call. Tmob has fallen off my radar but should take another look. A GSM carrier is in my future either way. Or maybe I will just keep my photon for travel, and get GS3 for domestic use....

I absolutely agree. Hardware wise, the Photon excels against most of the plastic crap that is for sale these days (Samsung phones mostly), not to mention the best radios of any phone that I have used since the old Nokia phones of the 90s.

Flash the kddi radio and use Straight Talk. As long as your under 3GB a month in data, AT&T's fauxG is faster in than Sprint in a lot of areas. That and it's about $50-60/mo

Screw that, I'll be getting a GSM phone with HSPA+/LTE for my next phone with either Straight Talk or Simple Mobile. Hopefully the next Nexus phone isn't made by Crapsung...we'll know in a few short weeks!
