Official Metro GSM device/network/Tmobile-ish discussion thread

on the L9 your going to get hspa+ on the F3 your going to get the lte. both are good depending on your location one might be better then the other. and both the l9 and F3 should have better speeds then the avid and motion because from my understanding they only use the reformed metro towers

So when it comes to 4G we have..

HSPA+, WiMax, and LTE?

How does GSM/CDMA come into the mix here?

Really just trying ton make sense of this all. Would the coverage be different on the L9 vs the F3, or just the speed?

yes 4g is HSPA+, WiMax, and LTE, LTE being true 4g
mostly LTE is better but in some parts HSPA+ is faster

metro only has HSPA+ and LTE

cdma is what metro used before the merger with big T witch will be shutdown 2015, and if you have a cdma phone with lte your only using the reformed metro towers not the tmobile network. its not bad im geting around 13mb in new york

gsm is what they are moving to, if you have one of those phones you use tmobile network with LTE or HSPA+. you can check the coverage on tmobiles page. but in order to activate your location has to be on the byod list

These are GsM speeds in ATL. Depending on location, speeds should be fast.

damn I want those speeds but i dont want to fork over 600 bucks for a gs4 or 150 for L9 or F3. i thought the moto x was going to be the phone ill buy but they messed up the pricing strategy. ill w8 for the nexus 5 Google don't let me down

Really appreciate the help fellas.

So the L9 would be a GSM phone, correct?

Also, what are 'reformed Metro towers'?

I live in NJ, right across the bridge from Philadelphia. Sprint 4G WiMax exists in the city, but not over here (where I spend 99% of my time).

I don't need great speeds, but reliable connection to display web pages in a few seconds or less would be nice. If the HSPA+ coverage was good, it would be fine. If the LTE coverage would be significantly better, I think it might be a better idea to get the F3, though it has a smaller screen.

Spec-wise the F3 is the better of the two phones. In addition to having both HSPA/4G and LTE, it also has a better CPU and bigger battery. I've had mine for a couple of weeks now and it's a fast, smooth operating phone. The only real advantage of the L9 is the larger screen if that is important to you (it wasn't to me).
Unfortunately they both have about the same amount of limited internal storage, this can be at least partially addressed with root and use of Link2SD.

Today, my HSPA signal has been on and off, and when its on, data is completely unusable. Does that mean that they're upgrading the towers?

It likely means either they are refarming the HSPA in order to prepare LTE deployment, or just standard maintenance.

When they modernize the towers, does it extend the range of HSPA or 2G? If the map on opensignal is accurate, I live just outside of the range of 2 towers and barely get any coverage at all, but solid coverage in the city.

It probably depends on each individual case, but I'm not really sure.

Both since it replaces both technologies so both run through the new Integrated Radios which is the reason for more coverage

I was curious, I comparing specs on a couple of phones I'm considering buying; why is it the F3 is running on LTE, but the L9 is running on HSPA+?

I just wanted to let everyone who hasn't checked the metropcs website that there is a new phone The Huawei valiant. They are also selling the SIM cards online now.

I was about to buy the sim card, but it doesn't give you a choice of what kind to order. You won't know if you're getting a mini, micro, or nano sim.

Why did they bother? Aside from it being a Huawei, it's not even 4G.

Yeah, I was looking at it too, and it's only a 3G phone. It is a GSM 3G phone. How odd. 'Course, it's no more odd than the flip phone that they are selling now.
