Official MetroPCS BYOD discussion thread

I also asked a t-mobile rep yesterday at a store whether the phones would work and he told me they wouldn't. They are either misinformed or lying.

I purchased an at&t Samsung Galaxy s3 on ebay in great condition. I went to a Metro PCS store where I was able to get the phone on the BYOD service. Everything has been working for fine except for my DATA. All I get is EVDO and when I look at a friends Metro PCS GSM phone they have 4G. I checked my my coverage and I am positive there is 4g and atleast 3g. For a split second I did get 4g lte until I called my friend which then it went back to EVDO. Can someone please help?

In settings -> about phone then status can you tell us the mobile network type

I have an AT&T Samsung Galaxy Mega unlocked and working fine through Metro/T-Mobile.

My question is, how do I update my phone to any new T-Mobile towers? The *228 doesn't work as that's Metro, the upgrade in the phone settings is looking for AT&T upgraded towers so how do I update T-Mobile towers?

No need to worry. Its done automatically on GSM phones. We dont have to punch in anything.

Would it be better to BYOD to Metro or T Mobile? I am with Metro now and for 3 years I have no complaints.
From what I have read that's rumored...It would not make a difference. Either/Or.

I would switch to that t mobile plan if it had at least 300 minutes. I don't talk much but 100 minutes is ridiculous.

Right now I have 500mb data plan (since I'm always on Wi-Fi) for $40 unlimited talk/text. So I guess that MPCS is the place to stay.

I agree with you on that, I use more data then talk

How do you manage? I burn through that in a day sometimes

I'll be using much more data now that I'm off that buggy metro 4G, used about 1GB last month, before the combine a minimum of 3GB

I know how he manages it. I am using a CDMA phone with a $50 dollar plan of 2.5gb. I noticed that metro only counts the data used for streaming video and music. Everything else doesnt count. I spent the entire month and only used about 10%. I am going to change to a gsm phone soon and i am kind of scared that the new phone changes how they read the data used. I rather have slower speeds and keep the plan i have know. My cell phone signal sucks though. I want to try the wifi calling feature on the new gsm phones.

Yea they changed that plan selection in like early 2012 I believe

Depending on your data usage, the T-Mobile $30 plan might still make more sense. If you are using, for example, 4 GB of data most months and 300 minutes of talk, you'd be paying $50 for the T-Mobile $30/month plan ($30 + 200 extra minutes at 10 cents each) whereas you'd need the unlimited plan on Metro for $60 to get your 4 GB unthrottled.

I have a couple questions....
1.I already have an account with metro on the $25 plan...I DONT want to upgrade that one BUT I wanna add TWO new lines(They were on metro a while ago but I left because at the time there was no GSM)..Do I still qualify for the $100 rebates?

2. I sell my phones on ebay and CL alot....Do you I have to always call *228 to activate phone, or can I just do it on my own on the website?

3. Since I have one line already on the $25 plan, would that line get the family discount as well with the other two lines?

4. Does Joyn work on any GSM phones?

5. I have an HTC one and an S4 im trying to port over...Will the hotspot functions on my phones still work? Im on tmobile now, but I brought them from ATT and the hotspot works perfectly fine now with no extra charges.

Sorry for all the questions....I just wanna make sure this is what I wanna do before I truly switch back over to metro.

Thanks again!

1. I am pretty sure metro promotions only qualify for new activations. I am pretty sure you can get rebates if you buy a new phone using while activating a new line.

2. I bought a new LG Optimus F3 from Amazon the other day. I saved myself tax and the shipping was free. :). When i received it i activated it online in under 10 minutes. Very fast and very easy. It saved me the $15 dollar activation from the Metro store (complete ripoff).

3. I think you have to get 4 lines in order to enjoy each line for $25 dollars. Also remember each of those line gets only 500 mb of data. In total you get 5 dollar discount for every other line that is activated up to 4 (i think).

For example if you have two lines in the family plan and each has 500 mb data plan you are going to pay $35 dollars per line instead of the regular $40 dollars. If you get three lines it will cost you $30 dollars each. If you get four lines it will cost you $25 dollars each. Pretty sweet deal if you don't have to use too much data.

4. When i use the "joyn-capable" filter on the metro website under the phone tab the only phone that comes up is the GSM Samsung Galaxy S3.

Android Phones | Android Smartphones | Prepaid Android Phones | MetroPCS

Honesly i am not even sure this is true. I was pretty certain most of the new smartphones that came with Metro allowed for joyn. I know for a fact my CDMA Galaxy S3 use to be able to use Joyn.

5. I am not sure about the hotspot question. I would assume since the new Metro PCS gsm phones have pretty much the same software(like wifi calling integrated) and hardware as t-mobile maybe you can use hotspot. But i think Metro charges extra for that service though. You are going to have to ask somebody at a metro store. That is if they have any idea what they are talking about. Half of them are clueless.

Can't wait to start hitting these Watch out AT&T: Verizon
Some markets with tmobile should be able to next year

that's cool, but what they are saying is most of those speeds are theoretical because no one is on them yet, they even said it should have problem been faster, this is probably that LTE-A that they were referring to on the G2 as well, still awesome though
