Official MetroPCS BYOD discussion thread

By any chance have you noticed any improvement on signal strength using that GSM device on Metro as opposed to the CDMA device.

Honestly, I think it depends on what device you're using. Examples from BYOD Devices I have confirmed and used.

Xperia Z- Horrible Cellular Reception, Beast on data
Iphone 4- Great Cellular, data slower
Iphone 4s- Amazing Reception, great DL for a non LTE device
International S3- Amazing Reception, data was hit or miss
Note 2- My personal favorite, best of both worlds
S4- Great, wished reception was as good as my note 2

Bottom line, in south florida, from my many years of screwing up, screwing around, and just all around knowledge, up until now, Metro's cellular coverage is better then T-mobiles. But if we are talking Data, Metro would get its ass kicked,

I'm also looking at the $100 rebates ($50 for BYOD, $50 for BYO Phone Number). From the rebate forms, it appears that the activation needs to show up on the receipt; I'm guessing that means that the phone must be activated in a MetroPCS store (with the $15 charge)? And does MetroPCS have a good reputation for fulfilling rebates (a problem I've had with some companies)?

I'm also considering the $30 T-Mobile plan. I like the 5GB data and most months shouldn't have a problem with the 100 minutes. What advantages/disadvantages are there for signing up for the more expensive MetroPCS plan (beyond unlimited minutes), anything I should be aware of?

I would assune that if you do indeed get access to the t mobile towers then there really is not many disadvantage. The only advantage t mobile would give you Is that you could buy your phone with credit as opposed to buying the entire phone with one payment. If you get unlimited internet from metro using the t mobile towers for only 60 dollars a month then it is a great deal.

Hey guys. I have a old Samsung galaxy tab 7" from T-Mobile (SGH-T849). Just wondering if I can hook it up on byod for my son. I know metro doesn't have it listed on their website as compatible but thought I'd ask the experts in here. Thanks in advance

As I mentioned in the OP, the advantage to T-Mobile is that the plan I would get is only $30/month, though it only gives 100 minutes (10 cents per minutes if you go over the 100 minutes). I also have no additional fees (I have the T-Mobile SIM), whereas with Metro I'm looking at $10 for a SIM card and $15 for activation. Additionally, I can just move my SIM to a different phone with T-Mobile, I don't have to call the carrier to get the new phone to work.

I did mention I was looking at BYOD, so I'm not looking at buying a new device and will also be on T-Mobile towers, regardless of if I go with T-Mobile or Metro.

Over the years I've noticed this as well.

On many occasions I've seen two people with the same carrier, but different phones, standing in the same spot with very different signal strengths.

You seem to be forgeting that the tmobile $30.00 plan Plus TAX, which can push the rate back to $40.00 so not really any difference just less features.

The only tax, on the T-Mobile prepaid, is sales tax. T-Mobile prepaid is tax inclusive (like MetroPCS). As such, you are not talking more than $33 (at a 10% tax rate) -- and there are ways to buy that you are not charged sales tax. To be fair, I have heard that some areas also have an added 50 cent fee for e911, but that isn't charged in my state.

MetroPCS will likely also have sales tax, at least on the same methods of payment that T-Mobile prepaid has tax. On top of that, I saw something on the MetroPCS site that talked about some payment types having an extra charge associated with it, such as if you pay in store or from a phone.

If this is true, it would seem that Metro has the same or higher taxes/fees as T-Mobile prepaid.

They're called convenience charges

Just thought I'd post that I bought a 5S from T-Mobile yesterday and now its running on Metro just fine without having to be unlocked, these are the speeds I'm getting.

$55 ?
Counting a $5 family discount?

me too, seriously, my galaxy note 2 had the best reception out of every device i've owned, even better then my s4, so I expect big things from the note 3(no pun intended), I will most surely be disappointed if it turns out to be a flop

$60 with a $5 family discount making $55 and I live in South FL.
Oh and I'd also like to add that T-Mobile did not want to sell me the 5S without service even though they offer it on there website, good thing I have a friend that works there or I'd have to end up waiting for Apple to sell the unlocked version. Also, the reps over at T-Mobile are very misinformed saying that the 5S wouldn't work on metro's network these reps need to learn that we now basically use their towers lol.

I just recently activated my At&t samsung galaxy s3 over to Metro, and I erased the old APN settings it had thinking they were no longer in need :o and now my internet, and picture messaging is no longer working. Does anyone know what APN settings I can use on my S3?
