Official Motorola Atrix Review Thread!!

since so many people seem to be debating its usefulness before the review's actually up, I figure I should give the head's-up to ya'll that Engadget's posted their 2 cents.

quick spoiler: phone's a 9/10.

I don't think anyone posted this yet, but the Engadget review for the Atrix is finally available (link in the OP)! They gave it a 9/10 and loved it except for a few small issues. The accessories, on the other hand...

I have to admit I thought you were just messing around. Thanks for the info.

Engadget basically said it was the best Android phone they've ever used. They seemed impressed with everything about the phone itself...laptop dock and AT&T, not so much. Glad I didn't wait to read it before I preordered.

If you absolutely need your phone to pull double duty as an entertainment dock, just get a long HDMI cable -- you, and your wallet, will thank us later. -Engadget review
Does this mean that we can use the webtop without any docks?

I'm disappointed that Engadget didn't discuss the fact that At&t hasn't rolled out the enhanced backhaul to must of their network when they mentioned the standard 3G-like speeds they got with the Atrix. I'm guessing a lot of potential buyers will walk away with the wrong image.

Yeah that's a big issue. They have the clout to contact AT&T. They should have put forth the effort to confirm that "4G" speeds will become available over time in different coverage areas. Would have been nice to see them pressure AT&T into giving up some timetables on those network upgrades.

Someone in the engadget review comments mentioned something about there being a special hspa+ sim card. They say your regular sim will not provide the fast speeds. Is this true? I would like to swap my iPhone sim back and forth. I have a micro to regular sim tray.

I wonder if Josh really checked into this or he's just guessing about the bootloader. No sideloading we knew.

Adding insult to injury, Motorola (or AT&T, who has a habit of doing this sort of thing) has locked the device down in a way that not only prevents you from flashing the phone with a custom ROM, but also won't even let users install apps via email or SD card.

This one is interesting too:

we're a little disappointed by the fact that Motorola and AT&T are loading up the Atrix with a considerable amount of bloatware, and there's nothing you can really do about it. Vlingo, a handful of AT&T apps, Blockbuster, and a smattering of other programs all ship on the handset with no option to delete them.

Which contradicts what CNET said here:

Of course, you've also got your obligatory AT&T services--AT&T Navigator, AT&T FamilyMap, and AT&T U-Verse Live TV--on there, but for once, you can actually uninstall any of these apps if you wish.

EDIT: Josh now says "some" can be uninstalled but not all.

I liked the phone from the CES showing. I was planning on getting it if I go to AT&t anyway regardless of the reviews. I am surprised it got rated that high on Engadget looking at how he rated the LG 2X.

I like the UI on the LG 2X. Must be like I guessed, the software must be a lil more stable (or dare I say better?) on the Atrix than the LG 2X. Right now anyway. I know LG wouldnt mess up their first foray into high end Android phones...

I've been told this too. There is also a special feature code for HSPA+ and I'm sure that wasn't enabled.

There is no special SIM card but there is a new feature code for HSPA+ that does need to be enabled. If this wasn't during the review, that would explain a lot. Guess we just have to be patient and hope for the best.

I just canceled my pre-order and I will be waiting for the phone to be released first to see it in person. I don't want to be disappointed and pay a $35 restocking fee to AT&T (I hope not)..
