Official OTA Update Discussion

This is built in feature not sure from android or samsung. It was not enabled by default but when I setup my exchange email account I had no option but to create a password.

So this exchange email account allows you to use an actual password to lock your entire phone??

Yes it replaces the pattern thing, once you setup this password. I guess it might be to secure if you are setting up office emails.

Is there a way to recover data w/o needing to go to homescreen? Any hack or anything?

I used the Captivate's "Software Update" feature to perform the update a couple days ago. During the update install, there was an error message ("the application device management processcom.wssyncmldm has stopped") but the update appeared to proceed and the phone works fine. (GPS almost never locked before the update and it almost never locks now.) But if I go to "Software Update" now, instead of taking me to the update screen, all I get is a message saying "No firmware". What does that mean?

Today there was an AT&T software update available. No indication of what it's about. Download took about 4 -5 minutes. Is this the GPS fix? My GPS seems to load a lot faster, secures 10 satelites, and has 16' accuracy. Is this it?

You are not alone, I, and many others have experienced this issue. I wish people would take it seriously, there is an obvious bug.

The Software Update feature no longer functions for me.

I am experiencing this as well, and had no indication of an error during the update. Furthermore, everytime I power down the phone and power it back up, upon getting to the home screen I get the "Congratulations! New software update for phone installed. Phone is ready for use.". I get this message every time after I reboot.

what happens if you get calls or text. Because of my job, I get lotsa calls, emails and texts. Just worried that it will cuse havoc. Should I first turn on airplane mode?

During download process, you can still make/receive calls and texts.
Once the installation starts, your can not use your phone for anything until installation completes.

Dont know if this is too drastic, but I did a factory reset and then went to the software update and it worked. I didnt get the no firmware message, it installed perfectly...

OTA does not work on my phone I tried and tried so many times by changing date I need to wait like 150 Hours before next attempt.

Anyone out there with "Super Root User" done to their phone with "One Click Lag Fix"
got OTA ?

I really dont want to use Odin 3.

Thanks

30 minutes ago I did a "Check for update" and downloaded the update.
Everything went fine. I can see Quickoffice already trying to open pdf files so I know I got it.

I'm backing up the ROM as I type this.

I'll check the GPS after I get it off of the charger.

(OCLF, Clockwork, AT&T garbage removed)

what he said, the phone will even warn you that you will be unable to make or receive calls, including emergency calls

The OTA update software is designed to block out all interference like calls and texts.

This is a given standard for all OTA activities across the industry. It's not specific to Samsung.

Ok.....the recent update we rooted folks can't get........

1) Was it worthwhile?
2) If so.....anyway to put it into a useable update.zip?
What all was in it?

I was still receiving and replying to texts during the download portion. I didn't attempt phone calls. Of course, once the phone resets and begins the actual update process, obviously, it's not in a state to even receive calls, emails, or texts.

Still haven't received the OTA update. I unrooted and manually checked the servers but every time it went into the installation mode, it progressed steadily to 34%, jumped to 50%, and failed. My GPS hasn't worked at all, not a single lock, so I really need this update. Should I just take my phone back to AT&T or wait for them to push me the update?

Try upgrading the firmware via Samsung Kies/USB.

It apparently works even if OTA says failed... At least that's what someone at XDA says.

So I took the leap and updated to cognition, its great. My question is Im on JH7 now and what will happen when future updates come out? Will I get them, will this ROM prevent the OTA...where does this position me for future updates and changes?

The great thing is I just got a new captivate today and GPS signals are twice as strong as before. When I threw cognition on it, the GPS has been great and I mean great so far. Who knows, its only day 1 and there are plenty of stories of great working GPS on day 1.

Modded ROM's won't prevent OTA updates but the updates would probably fail. So your choices are to wait until a modded ROM comes out based on the new firmware or restore back to original and get the OTA.
