I think you're confused about how this works, because it certainly doesn't work the way you describe it. Once you select "Check for Update" and it doesn't connect or doesn't find an update, you CAN NOT use that function again for 24 hours.
There is no way, you could use it twice in 30 minutes.
 
From what I heard, you will get a message from AT&T saying that you have an update available. They are appearantly rationing this update out to 15k units a day so I am not sure you can "force" an update from their server. I could be wrong but, this is what I understand from reading some of the information about it.

What I dont know is; will modded phones need to be "rolled back" to stock before updating? This update does not seem to include the promised GPS fix (according to the official changelog from AT&T and the JH7 version people have been playing with for the last 3 weeks.) Will they then be releasing ANOTHER update in the next few days to address the GPS problem to keep their September promise? Or is this JH7 a tweeked version of the older one and they just left out listing it on the changelog to torture us (which doesn't seem likely)?

I guess we will soon really know when people actually start getting the push and posting info on it..
 
Has anyone actually received the update? From all my reading I can't find one person with a confirmed update. Seems highly unlikely that not one of us from the captivate online community would have received it if they did indeed release it. I doubt they have rolled it out yet.
 
Let's be reasonable. Samsung promised a firmware update by the end of September. at&t is releasing a firmware update throughout this week. Put two and two together. This IS the promised update guys. There will be no other this month or next month.

So, the mystery is this: Why is there no mention of the gps issue in the update notes?

Well, what are the possibilities?

1- This could be simply an oversight by at&t. Firmware updates aren't publicized by companies or followed by many people. You will never see an ad on TV saying, "Firmware abc123 is coming soon." So it's possible some at&t technician wrote a quick note and posted it and nobody checked it.

2- Remember Samsung didn't say they were going to fix a "gps problem". They said they were going to "optimize" their gps. They have been sugar-coating and/or ignoring the issue for the most part, while probably working on a fix silently. Did we expect them now to come out and say, "OK we have fixed our gps screw up now"?? They might be releasing the fix silently to make it go away and not have anyone talk about it.

3- Samsung, or some sources close to it, had said they were actually testing a firmware update. It IS possible the gps test results were negative, and they couldn't do anything about it, couldn't figure out how to fix it, and decided to release the promised September update anyway, with all the other updates and fixes (like lag problems, media scanning, etc). They're not going to come out and say, "We intended to fix the gps problem, but we couldn't figure it out." Instead they will just not mention it. They had a deadline to meet.
 
If they already told the public that they were aware of the GPS problem and were working on it, how does providing a silent GPS fix help anything?
 
They did say they were going to"optimize" it though, and would/will need to acknowledge whether this is that optimization or not. Honestly, the way they recently ignore the issue, and their language choice surrounding it have me worried on whether they can fix it or just make it better. Now that the vibrant fixed leaked firmware has been around for a while, has there been any confirmation that the fix endures beyond a couple of days?
 
Have a feeling we're not going to get an update, no one has received it yet. Been looking around the popular sites and there's no news of it being pushed other than what we've heard so far.

It depends on your bootloader/recovery and firmware version number. If your version of rooting your phone kept the same bootloader and uses the stock recovery, the update will apply just fine, if different you should be able to grab the update's url (probably will post on xda, once the update lands), and flash manually (you would probably lose root in doing so). Also, you won't receive notification of the update unless your firmware version is exactly the same value as the stock one ("2.1 eclair-update 1" I think, or something similar to that), and it might not work if the firmware id is different, as it sounds like that is the first thing the update checks for... This is just a bug fix, and chances are that whatever rom you are running has them fixed already or soon will.
 
To be fair, the GPS isn't broken so Samsung was correct in its choice of words. It needs to be optimized to provide more accurate fixes and maintaining GPS locks...at least in my experience with the Captivate's GPS. I haven't had the issue where the GPS (AGPS off) is totally unable to locate me. It locates me, sometimes accurately, other times inaccurately, but it "works"...lol...I sound like a marketing department.
 
If a piece of hardware or software does not deliver within the specs, hate to break the news, it's broken. My GPS takes forever to lock and loses the lock constantly. When it does work, for the most part, shows me way off my actual location or going in the wrong direction. Sad that a phone of this caliber suffers from something so critical given how the GPS is tied into a lot apps.
 
You seem very dissatisfied because of the gps. Why don't you just return it instead of complaining about it in every post you make?
 
I'm beyond the 30 day window, however, plan to give Samsung and AT&T till the end of October before I go back to my local store and demand that they take back the phone. I can even wait for Froyo, would love to see Flash on the phone but that's really not my main concern. If they fix the GPS and lag issues, I would be a happy camper. The phone has a ton of potential, the reason for sticking around hoping things turn for the better.

Good luck returning it if you are pass your 30 day window. I really wished I would or returned it. I bought the phone about a week after it came out. I kept it hoping Froyo will be worth it and they will fix the GPS. Now I am pass my 30 day window and stuck with this phone.

I won't be surprised if this does not get fix or we don't get a froyo update. According to Engadget, Samsung Spain just push back there release date to late October.

In Europe, they had there phone for a few months BEFORE we got ours and they STILL don't have an update.

I was hoping that Samsung would release it soon because this is there flagship phone and now they are bringing out a tablet using the same name. I know samsung has a really bad track record of keeping there promises but it would be really stupid if they don't fix this.
 
If the GPS issue doesn't get resolved soon, I can see AT&T having its hands full. People aren't going to hold of much longer, they'll eventually demand a solution or be given the option to move to another phone. I don't want my money back but I'll sure fight and aggressively for another phone, at this point an IPhone 4.
 
if this update doesnt fix the gps im gona be pissed..they promised us and they should deliver..hopefully..so lets keep our fingers crossed guys
 
Engadget just reported that the Fascinate is just begun to receive an OTA update that tweeks a few bugs they have... I know it esnt mean anything. To us, per-say, but it does mean Samsung is up to something.
 
My phone has locked that fast before and just as fast it has lost its lock. The fact we can't confirm any of his statements and we are trusting what he's reading, leaves me doubtful. A true indicator is when we see folks start posting about the OTA update. That has yet to happen, you can't hide 15K people, trust me they will go online and brag about their update. Especially if that updates resolves the GPS issue.
