Official OTA Update Discussion

Well my GPS was shot before the update, now it works, perhaps it's also a regional problem? Maybe if people said where they were when the GPS worked or didn't? No idea if that'd make a difference. I'm in Cambridge MA.

Complete Stock was warranty exchange 2 weeks ago. Battery was almost full.
Update started got to almost 50 % and then the phone went black. No warning, just like the screen timed out. I waited a few minutes and nothing. Waited a few more minutes still nothing. Tried turning it on, took out battery, put back in, absolutely nothing. Tried plugging in phone just in case.
Anyone else with this issue or am I just so very special? Thought I would check here real quick before calling AT&T. I spent enough time with all them before they finally warrantied out my phone.

"Whew"!!! Had a scare there for about 10 min. The phone paused at 50% also, then 2 min later finally finished, rebooted, stayed at the Samsung Galaxy "S" screen for more than 10 min. I thought the phone was bricked. I panicked and walked out to calm down and "Wompa" I see this message "Congratulations! New sofware update for phone installed. Phone is ready for use" **Phone is working like a charm**. Now to check the GPS status. Will post update. :D

Terrifying. I just got my Captivate yesterday and I'm excited about this update, but I've had terrible experiences with phone updates and this is just not encouraging to hear.

Too late now for me. Download cancelled in the middle and ended up bricking my phone. And to make it even better, they don't have any in stock by me...

It's a true YMMV scenario. There are quite a few varying results. If you'd like some encouragement, downloading the update took me about 45 minutes because I'm on EDGE (not personally). Then the actual update stopped at 50% for a couple of minutes and proceeded to completion. The reboot hung at the glowing "S" for about 10 minutes, then the home screen appeared successfully.

GPS? Well, I haven't checked every 10 minutes for updates since I believed that the fix would come in due time. It's never been a biggie for me. I'm pretty patient - except for unreasonable people. That said, I tested it and it's fast and accurate to within about 30 feet.

Encouraged?

Beware of the perpetual naysayers. Some folks aren't happy unless they aren't happy.

Oh don't get me wrong I'm absolutely loving the phone! I live and study in downtown Atlanta so I'm never wanting for a lock on my location with wifi. I'll just be waiting a few days to see what the general consensus on the update turns out to be. I have no pressing need to update and certainly no need for a useless phone for any period of time. :)

Coming from a Blackberry 8320 (which I never was able to actually update the OS on), this is just stellar. No complaints from me.

Is it possible to download the update over WiFi or it only downloads over the network?

If it is a big download, I would prefer to wait until I get back home (no open WiFi in the office) to download and update.

I just downloaded at work with wifi on. However, the 3G/Edge was also showing at the same time. Normally, with the wifi connected, the 3G/Edge symbol goes away. So, I don't know if it downloaded on wifi or cell. I will have to check my AT&T account later to determine which one.

The update seems to have fixed the GPS issue. I get a lock inside a building within 5 to 10 seconds. Before the update, I could never get a lock inside a building. Dead-on accuracy now (where as before it would put me about a half mile up the road). The lock is solid, the little blue circle no longer appears when first locked...which I assume was the "accuracy radius" indicator? Subsequent locks (after the initial GPS lock after a phone restart) are nearly instantaneous (due to cache I assume?).

Very happy with this update.

And I love mine, too. Yes, I had to replace it twice to get a unit that didn't randomly shutdown, but the third proved to be the charm. You're wise to wait for more feedback. Sometimes the hurrier you go the behinder you get.

I am also skeptical. However, I just completed the update and then went outside (I'm in a metal cased building) and the GPS Status app got a lock in about 15 seconds varying from 9/10 (used/satellites) to 11/11 with accuracy from 5 to 10 meters. That's better than I've ever seen before. However, time will tell whether this is a permanent fix.

DO NOT PANIC if the update seems to be taking a while. It does take some time to update and it will stay on the Galaxy S logo for some time. Be patient and let the update process complete, and put it on the charger if you can. the stock units should all update more often than not.

U Sir! are correct.

Did mine using 3g , and timed it. Total time start to finish, seven minutes twenty six seconds. Went very smoothly.
