Official OTA Update Discussion

I talked with Samsung level 3 support today and he advised me that the problem with phones not accepting the update has been recognized by them. The problem is a software one. They are preparing a corrected update they will be releasing in a few days to correct this.

wow,the plot thickens, lol i wish they would recall our phones and fix them, hell i will even pay for my shipping to and from, had 0 problems getting the update, but the gps? yeah you know it

So a update that we can't get will fix are phone (in the future, sometime, never....)

The OTA update for JH7 bricked my Captivate. I got the fix downloaded and started the update. Got a message that said "update failed. Your phone will boot now." Then the screen went black and stayed that way. Phone would not power on, and I tried multiple charged batteries. My phone is stock -- not rooted, no side loaded apps, no lag fixes, no deleted AT&T apps, no changes at all, excepted for market loaded apps.

Took the phone to AT&T store and they called warranty support. AT&T would not replace my phone in the store, because I am outside 30 days. Warranty support is sending me a new phone (refurb?) with a box for returning the bricked phone. Warranty told me that the new phone would have JH7 already installed.

Also, I have ordered an iPhone 4 through my company, primarily for Exchange email. I can get Exchange to work on the Captivate, but my company's security policy installs a password that locks the entire phone. I don't want this password lock on my personal phone, so I will use the iPhone for work, and my Captivate for personal. Now at least, I will have both phones and can determine through actual use which one I prefer. Up to now I have been a committed user of Windows Mobile, but I decided early that WM7 eliminated many of the functions that I liked about WM. Let all of the early adopters shake the bugs out of WM7, and maybe I will try it after my Captivate contract expires.

I really, really want to love this Captivate, but Samsung and AT&T are making it difficult. GPS problems. Lag problems, unless I am willing to install unofficial fixes. OTA updates that are difficult to install and can brick phones. The hardware is great. Android is doing fine. But the execution by Samsung and AT&T is terrible.

I manually updated last night on edge. Took less than a half hour downloading and installing. Got the message congrats and all is good. Havent tried gps yet, so I hope it still works. I have a trip back to Michigan in a couple days and if the gps doesnt work, I have to use the iphone.

Mine was bricked by the update as well. How many have had this happen? Any solution? They're sending me a new phone....which leaves me phoneless for a few days.

I am experiencing this as well, and had no indication of an error during the update. Furthermore, everytime I power down the phone and power it back up, upon getting to the home screen I get the "Congratulations! New software update for phone installed. Phone is ready for use.". I get this message every time after I reboot.

Yes! Me too! Every time I reboot the phone I get the Congratulations New Software Updated message too! Very annoying, makes me wonder if it really updated it correctly at all.

I updated my captivate a few days ago and now when I go to check for updates I get a popup message that reads "no firmware". Has anyone else had this problem?

A lot of people have had this problem, people are even getting it who haven't done the update yet. I have no idea what the answer is, but it worries me too.

I JUST did a factory reset as per someone's suggestion on this forum, and I am going to try the Software Update again and I'll report back.

UPDATE again, the factory reset was successful! That fixed my "No Firmware" problem! Now I can run Software Update again just as normal!

So there you go, try a Factory Reset of the phone, it will erase all your data on the phone including contacts, mms, and programs installed, but it won't erase your SD card.

Dont know if this is too drastic, but I did a factory reset and then went to the software update and it worked. I didnt get the no firmware message, it installed perfectly...

WOW! Your suggestion worked! Thank you so much, this has been plaguing me since I updated, I just did a factory reset, and now Software Update behaves like it did before, and it still says i'm using the new firmware. So this fixed my problem.

To anyone getting the "No Firmware" error, try a factory reset, keep in mind it erases all contacts, mms and programs installed, but not your SD card data.

No problem man, I just glad it worked for some else beside me...

This update did wonders for my battery life! For the first time, I got through an entire day ( off the charger at 9am, moderate/heavy use, and I have 15% left at 12:20am) on one charge.

I noticed a positive battery gain as well. My display was ON for a little over 2 hours, running maps with gps on for 20minutes, and 30mins of phone calls plus a variety of other apps and I'm sitting at 54%. Very nice in my opinion.

Don't get fooled. For every problem you report they have a standard answer. For a different problem than yours, when I talked to level 1, 2, and 3 support, all of them told me it was a known problem without even understanding what problem I was talking about. After they accepted that it was a known problem, it took them another 10-15 minutes to understand my problem. Looks like they have outsourced their support to some company who doesn't even know about the product.

I think you're confused about how this works, because it certainly doesn't work the way you describe it. Once you select "Check for Update" and it doesn't connect or doesn't find an update, you CAN NOT use that function again for 24 hours.
There is no way, you could use it twice in 30 minutes.
If you initiate an update and it isn't completed for whatever reason, there is the option to "Resume Update" which can be done any time.

lol,,, whatever, this phone is junk, looks pretty.gps? no good. locksup alll the damn time, stock everything,no free or paid apps added..have fun with it;)

you talk to a guy from India:rolleyes:,good luck understanding....when will americans wake tfu????

I updated mine via Kies, went very smooth. GPS still doesn't work right. It locks on quickly, but still puts you no where near your actual location, while sayign accuracy is 10 meters.

I have this problem but frankly I dread the idea of a factory reset. It has taken me a month to get this phone customized to how I want it to be. I don't think I have the patience to start over. I assume I could restore the apps with app brain but what about the rest of the settings and the home screens? After a factory reset, do all of these have to be re-customized? Is there any way to backup this work without rooting?

Samsung Support is saying the following on Twitter, however, no such firmware has been released to the public. Anyone out there heard of it and know what the differences are?

From Twitter (GalaxySSupport):

"I'm compiling your feedback on i897DH7 update & will present to my team. My most sincere apologies to those experiencing difficulties. ^Leah"

When I called AT&T to start setting them up for a phone exchange, they got me into a three way call with Samsung Tech support and the same firmware was mentioned. At first I thought the same, probably confused and said the wrong letter. However, now I see Samsung's Twitter account saying the same.
