Official Release Date Rumor Thread

I called ATT about this last week.. You CAN NOT get your discount status back after 30 days.
It's not really "discount status" you lose it's "upgrade status." Slightly different because any retailer can sell you a phone at any price if they want whether you are upgrade eligible or not. Of course they usually don't unless it's 3yr old stock they want to dump but Costco is a different situation.

If you return a phone to Costco in 89.75 days (they allow 90) if something better comes out <wink> what does COSTCO do?

Do they just give you a refund and send you on your way which is pretty lousy since you can't officially upgrade anywhere else or do they let you take another phone at a discount price?

They won't sell phones at unsubsidized prices no matter what (I tried getting an Infuse from them back in July at the $600 retail price and they refused).

If Costco (or any non-AT&T corp store) wants to discount a phone out of upgrade they can. AT&T has nothing to say about that. It might hurt their bottom line but that's their problem. Costco is a different animal.

I remember when you could return a TV or camera at ANY time after purchase. Even 4 years later. And people did and they eventually changed their policy to 90 days for electronics which is still outstanding.

The Costco lady that I had asked when I bought my LG thrill was very clear when she explained I only have 30 days to return retaining upgrade eligibility anything beyond is an exchange only
or return for purchased price and lose upgrade eligibility.

Exchange only is fine because it would have to be at their discounted price (same as if you were upgrading).

Yes, you couldn't go elsewhere and upgrade because as far as AT&T is concerned you're no longer upgrade eligible. Buy something there in 2 weeks and you're good till mid-December. By then all the good stuff will be out! :)

Sorry if I was unclear, she specifically stated exchange for SAME EXACT item OR return for purchased price and nullifying upgrade eligibility. She might be wrong, but she seemed pretty familiar with the policy.

Um... really? I thought horses were smart? (no offense Mr. Ed)

Mister Ed, you are making terroristic remarks towards your fellow comrades, and frankly, i don't like it. What part of returning a phone, getting the discounted price of $40 knocked off of a $600 dollar phone sounds appealing? If you buy a tire on sale, a few days go by and you want to return it for another one that was on sale, but that sale is no longer going on, they don't just say, oh, here you go, we will give it to you anyways

Crystal clear. This is America, land of loopholes that benifit the company, not you

The thrill has really impressed me so far. the 3d is much better than I expected. far better than the evo3d. the screen color isnt as deep as tthe samsung screens...but I am impressed.

still have some tweaking and experimenting to do but so far i am impressed.

(and for those wondering....it has scored higherthan the sgs2 in every benchmark i have run Except quadrant)

Hey Mr. Ed, how much was that GS2 @ entertainmart? I just found one at the Plano location for $350 and bought it. nobody there even knew what it was.

So if the thrill is scoring higher.... Does that mean it's a better Phone? I'm really wanting to wait for sgs2 on att but you sound like the thrill may knock it out.

IMO, I'm pretty happy with the Thrill. It's performance is superb and the 3d feature is so damn good that now I can't be without it. When I bought it, I was thinking I'd use it to tide me over and return it for SG2 when it comes out but now I'm convinced I'm going to keep it.

Had Samsung released the SGSII to AT&T in the first week of August....I feel they would have had more sales from Android users looking to upgrade, and iPhone users who were bumbed that the new iPhone didn't release on schedule.

Here's the problem...you're blaming Samsung but it takes two to tango, who knows what was going on with the carriers? Ultimately in the USA it's the carriers who have all the power and the manufacturers (save Apple) are just peons.

I get the impression the carriers just werent jumping up and down at the chance to carry the SGS2. Almost that they didn't care if they got it or not, or that Samsung had to beg them to take it. Heck Verizon still hasn't got it.

Now, if I'm wrong and the late release was Samsung's doing, then I'm wrong. But we really have no idea what happened, and I got the feeling the carriers were the ones dragging feet not Samsung.

One reason I may think that is somebody posted an article a few weeks ago from a Korean language newspaper, where Samsung executives basically said the USA carriers were balking at the SGS2 and that was why it wasn't out in the USA yet. Was that report true? I dont know.

I think you need to look up the definition of "loophole". Because the only loopholes in question here seem to be people who want to buy certain smartphones, then return them (after more than 30 days) and get other newer smartphones ad nasuem. Rather than just waiting in the first place for the latter smartphones like they are supposed to.

But I know, children starving in Africa, and Americans main worry is big bad cell phone company was mean to me (and by "mean" I mean, providing a great service at a low price, by and large).

I am tempted to do the same, but I'm wary of phones without keyboards. I drop mine too much to believe that a touchscreen-only phone would tide me over until my next upgrade. :(

Oh no, ATT wont let me return my LG Thrill (well actually they will of course, just not for another newer phone at a subsidized price) after more than 30 days, you know, that's just the end of the world, screw capitalism. It's so hard being an American at the mercy of corporations everywhere. You know, he might be stuck with that damn crappy LG Thrill, that only has a 4.3" screen and 512MB of RAM, the horror (well actually he wont, since the policy is clearly explained, YET STILL HE WAS DRASTICALLY WRONGED, play along here). And people starving in Africa think they have problems.

lmfao... wow... you sir, are a moron for just about every single point you made. Your like the people who want to get on Jerry. And your example of the 'loophole' isn't even about there being a loophole, its about people wishing there was a loophole, people wishing they could cheat the system. My statement about corporations are correct, they purposely word things a certain way to benifit them, not us

Sooo.........not straying to far off of cellphone topics lol, how would the benchmarks be better on the Thrill Mr. Ed? Were you expecting this? Also, If I'm not that much into 3d stuff would the Thrill still be for me? Just curious.

more than likely, its the dual memory, the memory processes get there faster, even though its got half the memory

This is unbelievable. I can't believe I was actually exited about the conference in NY, its not like anything is happening anytime soon. And today I find out my iphone 3g's (yes its 3 years old) speaker just stopped working... I can use the headset and speaker works but not the part where you normally talk. I havn't dropped my phone lately or anything. I can faintly hear but barely. I've been waiting for this phone since march and my iphone is slowly dying on me I don't know if I can wait anymore! Why would you announce this phone with no release date!!

Trust me, we all feel the pain. I'm still rockin my 3 year old BB Bold with a trackball that barely works and a completely broken speaker. If this thing doesn't come out on the 18th I'm going to go bonkers!

Maybe I'll start to take a hard look at the Thrill but I'd rather have the 8mp camera and Gingerbread. Plus the 3D is useless to me and it looks a little bulky/thick but I have yet to check it out in person. Has anyone tried the GPS on the Thrill yet? That's a huge part of why I'm switching to an Android (vs. another BB) so it better work at least ok on the SGSII.

BTW, thanks everyone for the updates and info so far, but damn you for making me check this thread a million times a day!! lol

For sure....the carriers have a huge stake in all this chaos.

But why? I don't get the motivation. Considering there were virtually no changes to the hardware between the AT&T version & the international version.....why wouldn't AT&T want to have an "iPhone 5" caliber Android phone on their shelves 2-3 months in advance of the iPhone 5 release?

You have all these disappointed Android users of the Attrix (the only other dual core processor phone out), and all these disappointed iPhone users (that are on the fence) that are PO'd about the non-launch in July. It would have been a perfect opportunity to get a phone of that caliber to market early....with a reasonable time frame to get in the beefed up Q4 phones in time for the holidays.

I just find it hard to believe that AT&T pushed this deal off because they weren't convinced it would compete with the iPhone. (Verizons reasoning) Especially when they were in the position to port this thing straight over...considering the spec they settled on.

Your speaker issue may have an easy fix. Google "iPhone speaker stopped working". Lint in the earphone jack may be your problem. My wifes had the same issue and I was able to fix it fairly easily..
