Official Release Date Rumor Thread

Hello my fellow android lovers.

This is my first post, but i have been following it for about a month plus now. I have reached a tipping point, and felt i need to express myself.

AT&T have so pissed me off, its unreal. I cannot for the life of me, understand, how a company, decides, to release the BIGGEST, most SELLING android phone to date, to THE biggest market out there.....dead last...and still pending!

How can you from what, a MAY release? And still....STILL...not only do we not have it....but we have NOOOO idea when its coming out. NO ONE?!?!

I had the Galaxy S Captivate from last year, up until 2 months ago. I sold it on Ebay, getting ready for the Galaxy 2. And current using the Blackberry Bold....please shoot me.

I actually worked at AT&T from November 2010 to April 2011. Just before i quit i was already into the Galaxy S2....I was the only one. No one else knew about it, i had to inform them of that information.

Let me tell you this, working there in that period....NOBODY knows squat about anything techy. I worked with these "salesmen". They only care about one thing....commission...commission...commission. They have 0% interest in whatever phone is coming out, they only care whats on the show floor. So when you go there, or you call...dont for a second think these people actually sit down....research...and look into the future of whats coming...they dont. You know what they do when they are not selling phones? They are looking at sales screen and checking, rechecking, how much they sold, how much their competitor stores are selling, and how much they need to beat them out. THATS what they know..

Anyways back to my Galaxy S2 rant....sadly im at a point where, YES, i would seriously think of just not getting the S2 now...cuz lets face it guys, at this point...the S2 is BARELY gonna hold the tech crown when it releases.....its SOOOOO much delayed that its at the back end of its technology.

The sad thing is, if you decide to wait....will we going through another NIGHTMARE with the Galaxy S3? Will it be release in May 2012, but wont come to the states until 6 MONTHS after? Thats the dilema.

Kudos to Sprint...even though they are MONTHS after it really released, at least they wasted no time to get a release date the second it was officially unvieled to the states in late August.

But the worse of it all, the worse is......we dont know NOTHING! Thats what pissing so many of us off! We dont know when FK its coming out! Its been delayed, delayed, delayed....were always in the dark, they give us nothing to work with.

Ah man i can go on and on, im just fking fed with this BS way these US carriers do crap, i really am, its disgusting. Freaking Malaysia gets priority rights in June over the states...tell me thats not fked up...

too bad there's no way to verify that roadmap. assuming it's authentic, we have 11 days at most. but at this point, that just doesn't seem likely. if i were at&t, i would've released a date by now, if only to appease the geeks.

Yea...like I said earlier....I'd be happy to give my business degree back if someone can explain to me how Samsung/AT&T's handling of this "iPhone killer" phone makes good business sense.

They had the perfect opprotunity to sweep up disapointed iPhone users after the summer letdown by Apple (I'm one of them), and lock in a bunch of Android users that are anxious to get ahold of a super phone in the big summer lul. I know I would have loved to rub this beast in my iPhone friend's face 3 months ahead of the iPhone 5 launch.

Waiting to drop this a week or 2 before half the US goes ape-crap over the new iPhone (and weeks before superior or equivalent Q4 Android phones) will burry any anticipation people have left for this phone. What a waist...

Another lost opprotunity. The AT&T stores have the least informed sales representatives out of all the AT&T resellers, and have one of the most strict return policies as well. Considering how competitive many of the resellers are.....I don't understand how no one at AT&T is not recognizing this as a weakness in their business model. Maybe the numbers say something different....just doesn't make sense.

Maybe their secrecy is so that people who got sold 11 month old phones by their used car salesmen won't find out that their phone has been replaced 1 month later.

Well....the egg may be on our face. It's looking like AT&T will only be getting 1 other similar grade phone in 2011. We may be getting the Celox with the 1.5GHz Snapdragon & LTE. Otherwise, it will be the same as the SGSII.....and its rummored that the SGSII's processor (while 300 Mhz slower) might actually be better.

If you're not grandfathered in on AT&T's unlimited plan.....you have more 2011 options available to you (Verizon's Nexus Prime)....but for those of us who can't really leave AT&T, the SGSII may be the best Android option we've got until mid 2012.

There was never a date given for release, in fact the device was never announced until a few weeks ago. Every date you have read online was misinformation from USERS and BLOGS. Everybody's whining is based simply on ASSumptions of release and articles written on web blogs from people who want publicity and have no facts.

You sold your Captivate .... and that was AT&T's fault? Duhhhh.

You can switch to Sprint or buy one from Expansys dot com for $575 or on eBay for $550 with the money you got for your Captivate if you are that anxious.

I understand you're being anxious but don't blame AT&T for anything other than keeping quiet which is how all corporations treat product releases until they are ready to announce. No different from Apple not releasing iPhone 5 dates yet.

The amount of business the delay of release will cost AT&T can be measured in grains of sand on the beach. Hardly anyone cares about this device or anything but the iPhone except a small vociferous group. ATT is a multi-billion dollar company and this won't hurt them 1 iota. Everyone is severely increasing their personal value to ATT.

I sold my iPhone back in early June for this phone when the iPhone was at it's highest value ($600+) and simply bought a used Infuse to keep me going until the time came. I just may by-pass this device now and see what comes out between now and 12/30/11. I will easily get 80% of my money back for the infuse so I consider it a 6 month rental for $50-$70.

True....AT&T never "officially" announced anything until August 30th....but conventional knowledge told everyone that this phone would be hitting the US....especially considering the sales numbers after the first month of being live internationally.

Especially when leaked roadmaps & FCC records show all the work going on behind the scenes....it was evident early on that AT&T was getting this phone...much earlier than August 30th.

With that said, I still don't understand AT&T not getting out timely information to its consumers. So that their salesmen can push Samsung Infuses & Moto Atrixs for a little longer? And at the risk of these folks getting seriously pissed when they find out AT&T was obviously not looking out for them?

Again...bad business.

I just don't get the secrecy. If it takes a cell phone manufacture 4-6 months to react to competitor information and get those changes to production, whats the harm in letting it's customers know info on the phone atleast 1-2 months ahead of release?

What does it benefit AT&T or Samsung to wait until 1 week before release to let people know that this phone exists?

Celox and holiday.. and MAYBE a new Motorola w/lye

And my moneys is still on Oct 2nd. With that stupid robot movie preloaded on it

I don't know Ed.....Android OS holds about 10% more marketshare for SmartPhone OS than the iOS.

I've seen ALOT more people walking around with Android phones in the last 6 months. Before then, if someone had a smartphone, it was almost ALWAYS an iPhone. Even some of my technologically unsophisticated friends have discovered Android and have nothing but positives to say (aside from the app market)

I'm not suggesting that any Android phone will have a quarter of the fanfare of an iPhone launch.....but I also don't think that the vast majority of the people purchasing smartphones are completely clueless idiots.

Especially considering the majority of Android users are more sophisticated, and are more aware of phone specs, models, etc.....you should be getting more timely info out to them given the heavy competition in the market.

I sold my Captivate for about $230 on ebay. Its a used one, thats about the high you would get for it. So its like 1/3 of getting a S2 overseas, so thats not an option for me unfortunately.

And how the hell is the device announced just weeks ago? Its been announced since way back before May 2011. I mean if you want to call announce specifically for US release then fine.

And i will blame AT&T for this shit. Theres no logical reason this phone should of tooken anywhere near this long to be released in the states.

And its not even a fair comparision to the Iphone 5...because the iphone 5 hasnt been released ANYWHERE yet...imagine if it went overseas for over 6 months, and STILL no one knew shit about it for the states......thats the dilema with the SG2. I can understand when a phone is FIRST released its all hush hush, but this is not the case here at all.

I agree. If this was a new phone it would be different. Instead this is a 6 month old phone and I am sorry, but the way they are handling this is inexcusable. The only reason they have to not tell us when it is coming out is to pad their pocketbooks by keeping consumers in the dark and buying old devices. You can't blame it on manufacturing delays or anything of the sort because the hardware is no different from what has been out for 6 months now besides a capacitive button where there was a physical button. I am highly confident that AT&T knows exactly when this device is going to be ready, but for some reason beyond consumer benefit has decided not to share it.

Why doesn't Apple get out timely information to it's customers? Why do they wait unil 1 week before it is in the stores to officially announce it despite the fact the whole world knows it exists.

It's not a conspiracy it's simply what any corporate entity does to protect marketing information until they are ready to reveal it. Everyone is turning it into this big conspiracy against the subscribers. Maybe they do want to sell out other devices first? So what?

We all have the option to vote with our wallet and go elsewhere if we aren't happy.

Of course you are seeing a lot more people with Android devices than IOS. There should be especially when you can get them for next to nothing as well as on pre-pay across dozens of carriers in the US alone but there is only ONE iPhone and hundreds of different Android smartphones and many of them cost ZERO or $9 or $19 or $29 etc. etc. You can't fairly compare "generic" Android like it is 1 device to 1 iPhone that is $200 or $300. Yes, you can compare a LG Thrill or a Galaxy whatever to an iPhone 4 .... that's 1:1. You are comparing hundreds of devices on every carrier in the world to one device on a limited number of selected carriers. The Android penetration SHOULD be more than IOS. It should be a lot more.

And how the hell is the device announced just weeks ago? Its been announced since way back before May 2011. I mean if you want to call announce specifically for US release then fine.

It was announced 2 WEEKS AGO BY AT&T. The fact it is used all over the world means nothing because up until 2 weeks ago as far as AT&T was concerned it didn't exist.

And i will blame AT&T for this shit. Theres no logical reason this phone should of tooken anywhere near this long to be released in the states.
Feel free to blame who you want. You have no idea why it has "tooken" so long. Maybe it was due to all the lawsuits going on against Samsung. Maybe they wanted to clear out other inventory? Maybe they just wanted to make you angry? Maybe they have an agreement with Samsung that they have to wait 2 weeks after the Sprint release? Maybe T-Mobile has to wait 4 weeks after the ATT release? You have no idea what goes on behind the corporate veil.

So use the iPhone 4 or iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS same thing. They were announced here 2-3 weeks before released and they were announced here months before they were available overseas so those folks had to wait like we are for this device.

Please, take a zanax and relax. ;) Don't want you to have a stroke. :) It only a phone and it's ATT corporate business. You, me or anyone has no idea why they are holding off and whatever the reason is they don't have to tell us anything.

I'm not saying its a conspiracy.....I'm just saying its inept. Unless someone can break down the marketing theory or give me some use cases where this sort of in the dark speculation (followed by disapointment) is a positive thing for AT&T & its customers....all I'm left with is just plain old ineptness or a bungling due to corprate wrangling between Samsung & AT&T.

Secondly....Apple gets away with what it does because it holds all the power. The whole iOS business model is a very centralized one....where as Android is very decentralized.

While Android accounts for 10% more of the smartphone market than iOS.....ONE company provides iOS.....while several (just one being Samsung) provide Android devices. Samsung makes one of the best Android phones out there....but they don't have the barganning power that Apple does because Android is sold on many other popular brands.

It's why Apple gets to sell their phones in their own Apple boxes, instead of the stupid generic AT&T orange / white boxes. It's also why Apple isn't saddled with all the carrier specific bloatware either.

Apple calls the shots and they get to because who else are you going to buy an iOS device from?

Again...not the case for Samsung.

And if they want to be the company that sells Infuses to people right up until the day the SGSII comes out, then that's their business (no pun intended) They will also run the risk of losing customers to competitors...especially as these unlimited data packages get phased out. It is literally the only thing keeping me from seriously evaluating other Android phones on competing carriers.

I am highly confident that AT&T knows exactly when this device is going to be ready, but for some reason beyond consumer benefit has decided not to share it.
Of course they know. There are probably thousands of them in warehouses all over the US.

It's simply a conspiracy against mankind, or maybe just a business decision due to a contractual agreement with Samsung. Nahh, couldn't be that logical. I like conspiracy better. ;)

Corporate wrangling, absolute possibility. Samsung may have said that ATT can't sell them for 2 ,3, 4, or whatever weeks after Sprint debuts it, and T-Mo can't sell it for 2, 3, 4 weeks after ATT debuts it.

Makes absolute sense and there is no ineptness about that. It's just big business.

And for the other folks who say the phone is identical to the European version (other than the button) is incorrect. Any single change in the internal boards requires a major redesign and I believe the EU models didn't have NFC and have a hardware button so obviously it is a hardware rebuild requiring retesting on US carriers and government approval. All which takes time.

I agree with you for those reasons you stated that there should be a larger Android market than iOS.

I was just responding to your post that hardly any of the smartphone users care about anything other than the next iPhone....and that this Android customer base is just a group of people you can shrug off.

My contention is that they SHOULD care about Android users....and they should because they hold the majority of the market share of smart phone users.

Look....at the end of the day, they get to do what they want. I think everyone realizes that. But, it doesn't make it "right". It doesn't mean its the most productive or positive approach to the situation.

And thats what these discussion forums are for....for us to talk about stuff....what when and whys. I think its perfectly reasonable for a consumer of a product or service to have a say in how a company is doing.

Just like AT&T has a right to tell us nothing, I as a PAYING customer have a right to get angry about it. I also have the right to take up their representatives time on the phone asking about it when they could have just told me.

It was announced 2 WEEKS AGO BY AT&T. The fact it is used all over the world means nothing because up until 2 weeks ago as far as AT&T was concerned it didn't exist.

Wrong. This phone was announced 6 months ago. Anyone can try to spin it how they want, but this is in no way a new phone nor is the situation anything like the iPhone. The iPhone is released shortly after it is announced. They don't announce a phone and then release it 6 months later. Also they don't announce the phone and then refuse to give the customer any dates either. Don't try to convince me that AT&T is handling this situation correctly because you are wasting your breath.

Whatever case, the bottomline is this phone should not have tooken anywhere this long to come to the states. Surely you must agree to that at least.

I did a little digging up and got info on the first Galaxy S to get some perspective here, if my dates off, please correct me.

Samsung Galaxy S - June 2 - Released in Europe countries
AT&T Captivate - July 18th - Released in USA

Launch of Galaxy S from initial launch to USA took about 47 days
Launch of Galaxy S2 from inital launch to USA (AT&T) is about 144 days and PENDING

Of course they know. There are probably thousands of them in warehouses all over the US.

It's simply a conspiracy against mankind, or maybe just a business decision due to a contractual agreement with Samsung. Nahh, couldn't be that logical. I like conspiracy better. ;)

Do you think I care if it is because of a contractual agreement? The blame still lays on AT&T for agreeing to the terms.

But Ed, why would Samsung make a deal like that with its flagship phone with a carrier that quite possibly has the worst coverage out of the big 4?

I'm not saying its not possible what happend.....again, I just don't get the business logic behind a decision like that considering the carrier you pick to exclusively champion your flagship phone to the public is Sprint.

The T-Mobile version makes the most sense for the delay due to a completely different hardware spec inside.....but still don't understand the motivation to hold the AT&T version back, even if it was to give Sprint exclusivity.

I have been following this forum for about 2 months now. I have been waiting for this phone to come out since JUNE and finally let my frustration boil over today. I called and talked to 3 different levels of people and about a dozen supervisors and told them I'm sick and tired of waiting and unless I got an official release date I was gonna switch to Sprint. They all told me the same thing. They said that AT&T is honoring Apple's wishes/demands and releasing the S2 AFTER the Iphone 5. They said that the Iphone 5 is "supposed" to be released on 14th or 15th, but that is not set in stone and could change. It could be an additional week or two until the S2 released. So it could be late October or early November. Feel free to call and bitch them out and see if you can get similar results. But thats what I was told. Looks like we'll be waiting 4-6 more weeks. Effing Apple!

Here's my take on the whole thing.

I think ATT is bowing to the manufacturer that has given them the most revenue and power. ATT pushed forward thousands and thousands of upgrades to customers in preparation for an iPhone release. What other manufacturer do they do that for? I would not be surprised in the least if they are holding off on releasing this phone until the next Apple product is officially announced. This way all the upgrades they pushed ahead go towards the manufacturer that has benefited them the most! While it doesn't make sense to me because they make their money off of contract renewals and not actual phone sales -- but why not help out their best friend that has made them something. I'm not saying it's right -- but it makes sense from a business partnership point of view. And give the Apple and Samsung legal woes I wouldn't put it past either one.

Secondly, given the dynamic, you can not fairly compare iOS to Android in market share. There is iOS -- one manufacturer one company. And then there is Android -- several manufacturers and hundreds of devices. If you did a fair market share -- take the best selling android device ever -- and compared the market share it would be well over 80% in iOS' favor. The fact that one product is even competing with hundreds speaks volumes. I'm not a big Apple fan. I have had an iphone for the past two cycles but I'm going with Android this time around because I think it'll fit my tinkering and personality better -- that and I loathe iTunes. iPhone will always be an institution not just a device. But I think there is some serious competition ahead. Which will leave no room for error when it comes for any partner involved to drop the ball on a launch like I believe ATT has on this phone.

I have been following this forum for about 2 months now. I have been waiting for this phone to come out since JUNE and finally let my frustration boil over today. Haha this just makes me laugh, in utter disgust. If that is true and were looking another 1.5 months, then ill tell my bro, go ahead and use my line to upgrade and get your GS2....im not gonna waste an upgrade on about 8 month old tech phone in the world scene....and ill take his captivate and have that hold me over. Seriously, screw the GS2 at this point, screw it.
