You can remove it per instructions without issue on 2.9.2. Saves some memory.
 
There are some good things on 2.2. Im in no real hurry, 2.1 is fine, but they only thing now is that some apps in the market require 2.2 and up.
 
So after a very weird set of events, I'm back as a fascinate owner. I ended up selling my original fascinate the other day on Craigslist for $225 after I had my little temper tantrum. (I am pretty peeved at Samsung still, lol). I was in a Verizon store yesterday and a lady was trying to return her Fascinate because she decided she wanted an iphone. She was past her return period by 4 days so they couldn't do it so she bought the iphone out right off contract and said I'll just put this phone in the newspaper (do people still list things in newspapers?), so for fun I asked her how much she wanted for the phone. She said oh about a hundred bucks. I said sold, pulled the cash out and now I have a newer Fascinate (not that it makes a difference) and made $150 bucks out of the deal.

Anyways I've decided root and throw superclean on. I was really hoping to not root (not that I am opposed to it, my og droid has been rooted for a long time now) but I felt like I shouldn't have to root it to get Froyo.

Lol. That's part of the reason I blame Verizon more than Samsung right now, though. There's no way the Fascinate is THAT DIFFERENT from the others that this is Samsung's failing anymore. Perhaps at first, but now the blame lies squarely with Verizon. Just get the update out there already. If you're not 100% confident in it, make it optional for now. Lots of people want 2.2 without voiding their warranty or having to do risky techie geeky stuff to their phones. Even though there's lots of support and the risk in rooting on this phone is minimal, it's still a risk some won't want to take - understandably.

You know, rooting would let you use Voodoo Sound, which improves the music output to waay past any iPhone or iPod. :D

Improve the sound in what way? I love listening to music from my phone. I have a set of earbuds, a set of bluetooth headphones, and I can stream my music to my playstation3 which is hooked up to my stereo. Music is my favorate part of the phone.
 
Clean up/properly amp the headphone signal. Won't affect streaming or bluetooth, obviously, but see the thread for more.

Currently only the imnuts kernels have a complete implementation of the latest Voodoo Sound.
 
I was watchin some video reviews on phones and became very happy with my samsung purchase. The review in particular was the Motorola Atrix. Basically a smaller screened version of the Droid Bionic, which is supposed to be the hot new phone coming out. In the review the reviewer said it was odd, even though it has a dual core processor, it had a tone of lag. He showed the camera just to prove it. I then read some forums for people that bought the Atrix and they confirmed what he said. Now it is mostly due to Motoblur, but my point is that despite all of their massive specs, these dual core monsters provide a laggy, choppy experience and my little single core last generation phone provides a lag free, buttery smooth experience. And it does so with a way better screen.

Random thing I love so much I have to share though. I have poweramp for my music player and was shocked the other day when I clicked on the empty album art section and it actually FOUND ALBUM ART and let me replace the empty spot w/ album art the app found online. I have to say that is BEYOND FREAKING AWESOME!!! My ipod doesn't do that :)

Anyway, carry on, I'll keep checking and wishing someone in the central ohio area would provide a service where I could pay 50 bucks just to root this stupid thing so I wouldn't have to deal w/ it.

I was at a local Verizon store yesterday and I asked the guy when we were expected to get Froyo for the Fascinate. He said that he had no idea. Playing dumb, I said that i thought maybe the store managers had a little more information than the rest of us. He replied that , no, he usually finds out when his customers tell him!

An honest rep! he still didn't know anything, but at least he was honest about it. I actually walked out smiling.
 
Honestly, this wouldn't be the first time a promised upgrade never materialized. Samsung made Froyo work on the Fascinate and Verizon let it die in testing hell. They've moved on because they know that the majority of "angry" customers will just buy a newer phone to get the new version of the OS. Sheep pay the bills, not the tech savvy.

As a quick aside, waiting 9 months for anything isn't "worth it," as far as I'm concerned, and particularly when 2.3 is about to roll out on other devices. 9 months is a measurable percentage of your lifespan. Think about that.

But more to the point: nobody is contending that 2.2 wouldn't be just swell on a Fascinate. People have tried the leaked versions, and they like it. We get that. The whole contention is whether or not we'll ever get an official release at all, and at this point, Verizon Wireless doesn't seem to care about its customers. They have no interest in communicating with Fascinate owners. In fact, I'm going out of my way to recommend to *all* potential customers that they avoid Verizon Wireless like the plague and explore other options.

I'll continue to dedicate time to this so long as Verizon Wireless remains silent. :)
 
I was thinking there may be a way for us Fascinate owners to force Verizon to update to 2.2. Everyone who has a Fascinate activate a basic phone on your line. Verizon will lose revenue because they can't charge us for the $30.00 month unlimited data. Then when the 2.2 update is available reactivate our Fascinates. What do you think?

You can't say "everyone that owns a fascinate" because the majority of people don't know that the phone would be better with 2.2 and just use it as it was purchased. The only ones that would do this is the unrooted and complaining crowd which is very few people compared to the whold number of phones out there. The rest of us on the boards are rooted and running 2.2

Well, for pete's sake now, I actually agree with you big time on this one. We need to flood them with calls and complaints. I plan to do so quite persistently now. This is no longer Samsung, folks. It's in Verizon's court, and they are showing they don't care. I, for one, am sick of it. And I'm not alone.

My bosses where I work just have Verizon dumbphones, and they too have noticed a steep decline in Verizon's overall service in the past year or so. I really really really wish Sprint would get some phones that I had an inkling of an interest in. The Nexus S appears to be headed there, but why would I want to jump to another network just to get a curved screen fascinate with OTA updates? Yeah, the up-to-date-ness is nice for people that don't mod and root their own phones, but it won't do me any large amount of good.

Grrr.... Verizon is making me so angry.

Oh how I wish Verizon wasn't the best provider around here for me.
 
So I was at a dinner function for my wife's university and I met a guy who said he works tier 3 tech support for Verizon. He said that the reason we haven't seen Froyo roll out to the Fascinates is because of Bing.

Samsung doesn't want Verizon to continue to use Bing on the Fascinate and Verizon has basically told them too bad. Make Froyo compatible with Bing, until then we will not release an update to Fascinate users. (However he did say that a Samsung phone with the "Google experience" was on its way to Verizon but that's all the could say, Nexus S possibly?)

So it looks like in the end somehow Microsoft is still screwing me. :)
 
That is the whole reason i wanted an android phone to begin with, to get rid of these company's tying my dang hands with all their crap. I mean really, it's essentially a computer right? I will be damned if someone can tell me what i can and can not uninstall on my computer. I bet if we dug down far enough we could find some kind of legal issue here.

Just as i thought all along, verizon trying to make sure they can continue to cash in on their bing deal with microsoft. effers!!!
