[Official] Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE Pre-release thread - Sprint official launch is Saturday, June 2

Ahh, I forgot about that. :turtle:

I think the 3D pre-orders started in early May, so it was an even longer wait time until the 3D release.

Thing is, I'd take it all with a grain of salt. The release date for the LTEvo will probably be strategized by Sprint on the spacing between devices, so that they can ensure a good "P & L" for all of the superphones they plan on releasing.

speaking of that...know of any alternatives to using the long press search button for voice commands??? since if I'm correct the search button will be gone, is there another way to simulate that process??? I use that a ton and am gonna miss that. I'm hoping there's another way without having to place an icon somewhere on my home screen

.

I always use the search button on the end. When I need a phone number I say dial so and so. I don't really use it to say text so and so but I also use speaktoit assistant for lots of stuff but it only dials numbers in your contact. I like saying dial target or starbucks to the search button. So we won't have that on the new phone? Just home back and menu?

can anyone shed light on if there's a reason phones like the OG and 3vo for example have the black border on the left and right sides of the screen? why not go all the way to the edge and gain the extra room, or at least it would so appear...would it throw off the aspect ratio or something similar? some of the gs3 rumors speak of the phone screen going edge to edge from left to right so I was curious why this isn't pretty standard already...
I would expect it's to allow for a necessary amount of overlap of your skin when holding the phone. We have hands, not pincers. Try picking up your phone, now hold it with the screen facing down, like you would on your back. If you have a good grip on it, your fingertips will probably be overlapping the front edges of the phone. Now try holding the phone in that face-down position, but this time only by the outer edges without wrapping your fingertips at all around the front. You will be able to do it, but it will take a little more strength to squeeze the sides of the phone. That extra squeezing will cause your fingers to fatigue much faster than if you had the extra leverage of simply allowing your fingertips to overlap the edge slightly.
When I pick up my phone, I grab it that way. They never do in commercials, probably because they want to to see the entire device. But when picking up an object it's natural to allow your fingers to wrap around it, even slightly.
If the phones were designed to have the screen run all the way to the edge, it would require users to pick up the device with a more unnatural "pincer" type grip, or else risk touching the screen and thereby launching an app or swiping to another screen or just generally launching some unanticipated interaction.
Granted, my example is only when holding the device face-down, but this can apply just the same when using the phone single-handedly in any position. I love my Evo, and I always want a good grip on it. It would irk me if I had to always watch out for the screen edges. As it currently stands, my Evo's home button has sensitivity that runs a little too close to the left edge for my liking, I find that my palm sometimes activates it during one-handed use.

I would expect that a touch-screen device, that entire dispenses of a bezel, would tend to be a pain to its users. They would either have to engage in one of the two aforementioned tactics to hold the device, or they would probably tend to purchase a case with a lip on it that prevents that type of mistake. And come to think of it, if that were the situation where there was no bezel, there could be no sturdy case for the phone, because there would be no place for it to securely wrap around without overlapping the screen. In either situation, I would avoid such a device.

I am incanting magic spells to have an all-knowing mysterious stranger appear here with all of our button answers, especially, search.
2-second press on the back arrow is currently not taken. Neither is 2-second press on the menu key. If those don't work, personally, I'll put voice search on my Wave Launcher so that I can always access it. Wave Launcher has been my solution for the Evo 4G's lack of dedicated phone and camera buttons.

A wizard AND a wordsmith; your talents are never ending my friend.

It's probably not what you guys want to hear, but it appears as though the search button/voice command activation has been replaced by a widget:

Search%2001.png

In Stock apps, there's a bar along the top of the screen:

Search.png

And most ICS optimised apps have a very similar bar along the top/bottom too. If they don't, generally, the three dots you see on the end there function as the menu button and there's normally a search somewhere in the menu.

It works, but it's not as handy as having a dedicated button. It's not something that is a major issue for me personally as I didn't use the button that often, but I can understand why the change would irritate people.

Anyone else's guess is as good as mine, but I'd say reducing the "bezel" is as much a hardware limitation as it is a design issue. Screens frequently need surrounding hardware too and this is obviously something that is being reduced as our technology gets better, but if you look at TVs, there were no bezel-less flat screen TVs until the past few years.

Also, I think it's pretty well known that there are considerable packaging/size advantages to AMOLED displays. Phones with AMOLED displays can be built thinner than traditional LCD displays (since the pixels are self-emissive, there is no need for a backlight), and I wouldn't be surprised if the same was true for the bezel.

I just put the widget on my phone now cause I forgot about it and I guess I'll deal with using that. I'm used to the button but whenever I need a business phone number I reply on that search so pressing the mic on the widget will be ok for me I guess.

I hear what ur saying but I hate (well strongly dislike) having anything but my wallpaper on my center home screen. with the screens becoming even more beautiful and now especially with the reported fabulousness of EL TEvo's screen, I love marveling at a nice hd wallpaper with nothing on it. I have to leave at least that center one empty...

with that being said, I do believe as it was mentioned that sense disables the permanent search bar, which I'm turning out to really appreciate now that we won't have the dedicated search button, because I'm now just thinking I'll put the widget on one of my other screens and it shouldn't too much of a hassle to just go to that screen to initiate the voice commands...ok I feel better about it now....thank goodness it's not permanent

also wondering if we can set up a shortcut directly to the voice command prompt...I'll have to try that on 3vo...

this would make sense to me if but for the fact that for me the majority of the time when I'm picking up my phone from a resting position or so, the screen is off and phone is locked etc. once in hand, the placement of my fingers don't interfere with my ability to read or see something I'm looking at. and of course if I go landscape it's altogether a none issue for the way I hold it at that point. the case argument seems valid though, although I'd like to think some cases don't wrap around the left and right edges and instead line up with them while the top and bottom edges are wrapped (never seen one, but then again never looked either). good points nonetheless amigo/a

For those of you that are similar to me (minimalist approach with homescreens, while still having functionality and access to as many apps as possible, without losing view of the wallpaper), I have an alternate suggestion for something I just recently discovered using Widgetsoid:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/...nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5qaW0yIl0.

Widgetsoid found a way to allow you to create a widget that would also be viewable in the notification bar, for quick toggle access. What's even better is, if you only want the widget toggle to be visible on the notification bar, but not anywhere on the homescreen, there's an option to have the widget hide (and it doesn't take up the space that you initially created the widget). You can customize the color to make it match your notification bar (or however you see fit, to match your overall theme). On top of that, it's not limited to just the "toggles" that come standard on the phone, so you can create shortcuts to apps, as well.

I don't use the search button that much, but I can easily see myself adding that to my notification bar widget, just for ease of access (no matter what I'm doing). It's really not complicated to figure out at all.

In regards to a May 18th release; I find it Ironic that when I called Telesales today and asked to move my June 1st upgrade date up, they said May 18th was the soonest.

Still trying to figure out how to get the pre-order on May 7th instead?

That's because they can only bump upgrades 18 or so days before your actual upgrade.

I may have to try this. I don't like my main center home screen to be too cluttered neither but I don't leave it blank. I have clock weather and I have folder organizer and I have a folder called email and messaging and one called games and I keep several apps in those folders but I don't really like that. Games I play alot I would like to just be on my screen by themselves. I have to many apps though and too much clutter. I like some widgets but I could really use more than 7 screens LOL! I'm gonna check this out later.

I thought you could still preorder even if you upgrade isn't till June 1st. That's what I did last year I preordered ahead of time.

I am referring to bumping up your upgrade, not pre-ordering. I'm sure you can pre-order even if you don't have an upgrade.

Oh Ok sorry mis understood. Someone said if the EVO goes on sale May 18th like rumoured and your do for a June 1st upgrade they will bump you up 2 weeks only. That is what I was told cause I was worried cause I was due on June 1st for upgrade and now there specualting a 5/18 release date but who knows. Maybe they will let you like more than 2 weeks early.

When I worked for Sprint they were extremely serious about the upgrade bump up. Even if it was a day before they could not do it. It had to be a certain amount of days before your upgrade or less. No ifs, ands, or buts. They can't budge on that.

Seriously. Wave Launcher. Doesn't take up space in the notification dropdown (not that that is a problem). But more importantly, wave launcher is available from any screen, even when the notification bar is hidden by whatever app you're using.

Siri is the voice command ability in the new iPhone 4S right?
Yes, Android does have a voice command ability. As all things in technology, iPhone released its new groundbreaking technology, Siri. Then, as is always the case with other companies competing with Apple, Android, in an effort to catch up, developed and implemented "Voice Search" ...2 years earlier. Lol, seriously, it has been around since 2009 in Android OS. Pick up your MoPho, or any other android, and hold down the search button for 2 seconds. It should go straight into voice search. However, if a menu pops up, select voice search. Once you see the popup with the microphone, hit 'Help' and then 'Watch Video' to learn everything that it can do (WAY more than just google searching).

In all seriousness, I have heard that, like with most things, Apple made some improvements with Siri. Apple isn't ahead of the curve by any means, but they do have a heck of a track record for taking tech developed by others and improving it just enough to call it their own.

I am by no means a big fan of Apple, the do make some nice stuff though. I have not played with my wife's iPhone 4s much, but she loves it.

I knew about voice to text and voice search. But as you stated, Apple has taken it a step farther. I was hoping that the EVO LTE would be able to the same or more. I am self employed, and a "Siri" -like, enabled device would make it so much easier for me to send text messages, make voice notes, set appointments and dates on my Google calendar and access my Google music. I plan to stay with Android, because I like it.

Perhaps with the evo lte, I will find even more features that i am missing.

This is all I have to say about Siri...LOL
