Root oh my another root thread!

hey guys!
been on here for a lil bit looking and searching about this phone and root. had the dx for a lil bit but never got around to rooting it. i have had this phone for a little over a week, and i really like it. havent had any problems with it so far. and my battery isnt that bad. going 12-14 hrs with mild-alot usage. ive been having a great time with it, i dont expect the battery to last 3 days with no charge or anything so the 12-14hrs im getting on it is just fine. plus if i do need a charge mid day i can always just plug it in at work, car or wall charger.
okay so ive downloaded the 3 files to root and have done adb. ive probabbly watched/read the tutorials about 7-10 times since its been out. so i believe im semi ready to root it.
my only question is what rom to download for me to be the easiest. so i can slowly get into the whole chapter in rooting(custom roms, radios, etc.)
gotta crawl before you can run.
im currently running android 2.2.1
baseband 1.16.00.0223r
kernel: 2.6.32.21-gb05544a

so if someone can help guide me through this on what rom would be a good STEP 1 into this root thing thatd be great.
im either gonna start rooting it tonight or tomorrow. depending on my mood:p

you might want to consider simply running the rooted OTA rom while you research. youll be safe on rooted,current firmware so your phone wont pester you to update,and you can takey our time reading the various rom threads and looking at the screenshots.

make sure you read all the sticky threads,and ask anything youre unsure of or uncomfortable about,its better to ask before you have prollems,rather than after ;)

just take your time with the root process and follow the directions exactly.the manual method is fun and is invalable experience to have for later use :)

just make sure that you understand youll need to flash SOMETHING immediately after. either the rooted OTA rom and radios or some sort of custom rom.
 
Yeah be sure to flash the radio as well go ahead and download it before you root so if you flash a gb rom you can have signal as well

what one is the rooted ota rom?

+1, rom manager just causes problems, it downloads roms slower than the browser and often corrupts the roms (happened to me more than once).

A screenshot app like shootme if your rom does not have the ability built in if you want to take screen shots, and terminal emulator if it is not included in your rom if you wish to overclock.
 
downloading the rooted ota rom...
when i root do my apps automatically restore or do i have to go and download them one by one? and what about the ones i payed for?
 
adb didnt work! having issues with adb right now. looking at the video links and walk thrus. computer is taking forever to update drivers on it
 
i followed natemil video and thunderboltforums.com adb process....
and copied and pasted things exactly
but it keeps saying:
windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it
the parameter is incorrect
 
pretty sure i used htc sync drivers,just installed it,then uninstalled it. ive got 3 htc phones so its a lil fuzzy now what worked with what :o

i personally used the first video to get adb set up and working.

rest assured once you get adb set up and working,the rest is pretty easy :)

the end result that youre after is be able to open the cmd window,type adb devices and get an output of your phones serial number with the phone plugged in and in charge mode.
 
wooo, it recognized my phone on adb
just took a little while. but my computer is still showing: installing device driver software
on the bottom right, in all the lil icons
later tonight im going to root it. gonna head to work right now
 
question:
when i root my phone do i lose all my data? on some tutorial it says it will wipe all my data. even pics on sd card? and what not?
and do i download titanium back up and root explorer before root or after?
 
you will lose all your apps,and your homescreen setup,and things of that nature. anything that is stored on your SD card,however is perfectly safe. if you want some peace of mind,you can back everything up to your PC first,its not a bad idea to make a backup of your sd card now and then,IMO :)

unfortunately there is not really a way around losing your other data,yet. youll have to wait till after youre rooted to be able to use titanium and root explorer,so no real need to download them prior. but the goodnews is that after youre rooted,youll never have to re-download all your apps,or lose game/app data again. :)

just make sure when you use titanium you dont backup up or restore any system data. only apps and app data. restoring system data across roms can lead to force closes and prollems :eek:
 
If you want to save your text messages so you don't lose them when you root you can D/L SMS Backup +. It backs up all your SMS (no MMS support currently) to your gmail account. Once you're rooted and you're up and running go to the market and re-download the app, click the "connect to gmail" box, enter your username/password, give it permission to access your account and then chose "restore".

I use this to restore roughly 9,000 texts every time I have to wipe my data and it works great. Between your Google account for emails/contacts, auto restore of apps and SMS Backup + it makes wiping so much easier.

FYI, if you have a lot of texts like I do sometimes you may have to "restore" more than once to get them all back and in the correct order in your SMS thread. Either way it's worth it, IMO
 
Haha, touche, sir. In all fairness, though, those 9,000 texts are mostly important and that's why I saved them.
