Ohhh Nooo...DUST!!!

Well people, I hate to be the bearer of Bad news...
But yes, these screens on the TB are not sealed right! And there is DUST UNDER MY SCREEN! Isn't that just great...

Gettin a car wash this morning in sunny NYC, took my phone out to send a text, sun was shining right down on my beautiful new toy, and I noticed what I thought was lint on the Top, and bottom right corner. And after wiping it off, I realized that's not lint on the surface, that's DUST under the screen. Years ago, this stuff would drive me nuts when it happened on the Blackberries...the original curve had the dust problem bad! But that was years ago, and BB were made of cheap plastic. This is a Flagship Android phone, are you kidding me? Well anyway, that's the reality of it. These screens are not sealed right, and YES, Dust is going to make its way in there and be chillin under the screen. There is no FIX, its a manufacturing build quality issue. And I doubt HTC cares to correct it!

Oh God. This is whats scaring me to be honest.... I wanted the Iphone b/c I thought it to be a quality product. But I waited it out for the Thunderbolt b/c I honestly love the Android OS and what HTC has done to it.

I was unable to purchase my phone on launch day because I'm waiting for a Best Buy Gift Card in the mail (Which I want to use towards the phone) so I'm still without my thunderbolt.

What scares me is that I'm beginning to think that this is the type of phone I will have to babysit. I have to make sure no dust gets into that little hole now, I have to babysit my apps and 4G toggle to keep its battery up, I will have to constantly watch over it?

Kinda lame.

This is making me start to believe that apple really does make the most quality products out there, despite that it has less power.

I wouldnt let this steer you away from Android. It's such a great OS, and platform. Honestly, HTC makes beautiful phones...however, yes the TB does have battery issues, and it looks like some build quality issues with light leakage and now Dust! There is no reason to believe this may just be an initial first batch issue. But to me a Flagship device having the Honor of being the first LTE 4G device in VZW's lineup should be free of issues like this...bugs and what not exist. But a tiny battery for a monster like this, and not being able to seal the screen properly are unacceptable!

Op is missing a very key word in his post. SOME. Some TB screens might get dust under it. I wouldn't cry wolf like this will affect all TBs. It's not like we're talking about the og bb storm here. Lol

Just like with every other phone out there some units which have larger gaps than others and might get dust under the screen.

No dust under mine. Really enjoying the TB! AWESOME phone.

I am more worried about the USB port & microphone jack getting clogged up with dust

Guys , seriously now! I been around long enough to understand how this stuff works. First off, a screen protector will not stop any dust from getting under the screen. It's most likely entering through the bottom border, and the screen....there is a space that separates the 2. Nobody is crying wolf here!

Just one of those things that will bother you if you let it. I've got dust under screens in the past and I just let it go, saying "oh well, so is life" and it never bothers me again.

If you're the type who lets things get under your skin and you obsess on it you will obsess on it and see it every time you use the phone.

It's like two people staying in the country for the first time. One of them gets awoke by a rooster and thinks "mmm, a rooster. oh well, back to sleep" and the second one gets awoke and starts freaking out "oh my god a rooster woke me up, now im awake, oh my god, im awake, how'm I going to fall back asleep? ? !! ??" and then they are awake for the next hour from stress and obsessing over the fact a rooster woke them up.

Hahahaha....I like the rooster analogy!...it is what it is!

It doesn't bother me if I've had the phone for a while but with a new phone I "just" paid for, I'll return. I returned my Atrix for dust under the screen. 1 speck turned into 3 the next day.

.......

I guess the TB crowd has the same types as the EVO crowd..

What your analogy completely fails to address is that its not just dust under the screen. Its not just a little light poking out when its dark. Its a failed seal.

You know those wet apply screen protectors? Well the whole idea of being able to get your screen wet, without damaging the phone hinges on the idea that the outer edge of the screen is perfectly sealed.

Ever hear of someone's phone getting damaged from steam from a shower? Do you think if dust can get under the screen, maybe steam can?

Most people just put a good chunk of change, and/or signed their soul away for the next 2 years for this phone. I don't let "things get under my skin" or obsess over things. I refuse to keep a warrantied item that I JUST bought that has a defect.

I just hope people wake up after the TB and realize HTC just can't build phones. They cheap out on the wrong parts, and then they don't fit right. They tried 4 build revisions on the EVO, and the 4th basically has every problem the 1st did, except the charging port fits a little more snug now. Now the TB comes out which is 99% the same phone, they've had almost a year since the EVO came out, and it has the same piss poor build quality.

When i first walked out of my Verizon store Thursday morning holding my phone i saw the gap... I thought, oh %@$!, blackberry storm all over again. There really isn't much worse than having a new phone with a bunch of uncleanable specs under the glass. If some phones have smaller gaps or no gaps at all I would really appreciate the heads up as I will be exchanging mine ASAP. As of right now i have no dust under my screen, but as I have experienced in the past it only takes one freak incident of pocket lint to ruin your brand new display. I really don't think screen protectors are the answer to this, and I think most cases don't get anywhere close to that gap. I really am surprised this far into the game a company like HTC would still be making design mistakes like this, non the less this is my first android device, and I have to say - I'm hooked. Dust or no dust there's no denying this thing rocks! until the battery runs out anyway lol...

Put a zagg on mine.. Nothing is wrong.. Just people over reacting over little things

Man , i have to agree on your whole statement!

Honestly if your bathroom is sooo steamy you are worried about steam migrating under the screen via holes barely big enough for dust you probably shouldn't have it in the bathroom.

Phones have so many other points of entry (around the on/off switch, batter cover, USB port, docking port, etc. etc.) that if you reached so much steam you're worried about it getting under the glass you have bigger things to worry about.

Besides that this is why bathrooms have exhaust fans. The smell of your going #2 is the minor reason they exist. The major reason is to vent excess moisture from bathing to alleviate issues with mold and excessive humidity damaging drywall, wood cabinets, collecting on metal fixtures and rusting, etc. etc.

TB is 99% the same as the EVO? Lol. Failure.

Add to that what cell phone has perfect build quality or no examples of dust under the screen? None. Know why? Because no manufacturing process is perfect. That's why.

The TB actually has great build quality, but one guy complains about dust and now it's piss poor? Wow. Some of you need to relax a bit. It's a phone not a diamond ring.

Ya, I don't bring any phones into the bathroom when I'm showering, there are other high humidity situations you'll encounter as well.

By the way, I repair computers for a living. I get at least one computer a week that the only problem is dust. Phones don't have fans or moving parts, but dust still impedes heat transfer and conductivity.

About other points of entry, open your battery cover and tell me where else dust can get into the internals of the phone. Ports and switches are sealed behind the port/switch.

Ease up killa! The whole idea of a forum is for people to chat about happenings surrounding whatever the forum covers. In this case Android! And seriously, facts are facts! Yes the TB is basically the same as the EVO, BUILD WISE! I had the EVO, as did a lot of people on here,, and the build quality was piss poor! So now were into almost a year later, and the same problems are present on the EVO, and now the TB..light leakage and dust! 2 things that can ruin your experience with a new $250 , 2year contract phone! It's not my fault, or your fault, or anyone of the forums members fault...its HTC's fault! They keep cheapin out on important material. You think HTC has such good build quality, speak to an HTC G2 owner and see what they have to say about there sliding keyboard hinge...I'm sure they'll have great things to say.

I suppose the EVO and TB are 99% the same...I mean they both have same size screens and are made by HTC so they must be the same phone right?..lol.

Again, what phone has perfect build quality. I'd like to know so we can put this piss poor build quality of the TB in perspective. I've had phones from all the major brands except for an iPhone and even the Jesus phone had its issues. I'm basically saying you guys will never be satisfied if your phones have to live up to the gold standard you're insinuating in this discussion.

I'm not saying you shouldn't complain. Every one deserves the right to bitch and moan and cry about something. But you do have a choice to stick with the phone/brand or not.

Don't mean to intrude on your session though. Would you like some cheese to go along with your whine? :D

However, it’s now Verizon Wireless’ turn to roar back with its version of the HTC hardware on which the EVO 4G is based. The HTC ThunderBolt takes all the goodness of the EVO 4G and pushes it further.

I'm insinuating no standards beyond what HTC is contractually obligated to in the warranty they wrote and offered with new phone purchases - you are hyperbolizing your inference.

Also, when apple makes mistakes, they fix them. HTC pushes it off to the carrier who inevitably will begin denying valid warranty claims.

What can I say, ignorance is obviously bliss.

I have had plenty of phones, and yes TB build quality around the screen edges is pathetic. yes you heard that right. I dont complain about phones. Yes no device is perfect, but what the hell was HTC thinking? Have the not learned from EVO mistakes? There is no excuse for the build quality on the phone that has been hyped so much by HTC. Why not just use glass over the front face? This is my first HTC phone, yes it is fast and yes I love the phone for 4g, but hey if HTC doesn't improve on this design issues it will be my first and last htc phone. I looked at droid incredible, that phone had beautiful design and I dont know why it is so hard to use the same build quality on your flagship device.

I love the phone but I am not blind to the fact that this phone is not living up to hTC standards that they brag about.
