Help "OK Google" not working

markdoc

Android Expert
"OK Google" just stopped working. It's never been perfect and it has stopped working before. In the past, all I needed to do was reset the settings or retrain my phone and it worked again. This time I cannot get it to respond to my voice when re-training. In Google settings, under "OK Google detection"; "From Google App" is on, "From any screen" is off, "Personal results" is greyed out. Under "OK Google Voice Model", both "Retrain voice model" and "Delete voice model" are greyed out. When I turn on "From any app", it goes to the Start training screen. Then I tap "Get started" and it goes to "Let's train your phone". The screen has "Listening" with the blue circle turning. I can say "ok google" 20 times but it never leaves the first "Listening" and the blue circle never stops turning. I have shut of the phone and did a soft reset, neither helped. Within Google, when I tap the microphone, it hears what I say and transcribes it. Please help.

Nope, nothing new. I called Verizon support and they were nice. They tried everything they could think of but nothing worked. Finally I did a hard reset. It worked, but what a bummer restoring everything. I'm not rooted so backups just don't take care of it all.
Thanks anyway.

Your absolutely right. I wasn't thinking and I guess the tech wasn't either. Too late now. Another 3 days and my phone will be in order. :(

Guess what? It happened again. This time I listened mruno and it worked. :D I set up Google Voice while in safe mode. When I rebooted back to normal, it was still working perfectly. I can't thank you enough, mruno! What a lifesaver.

I can't swear to it, but I think another app is interfering with it. When I first reset the phone, "OK Google" worked fine. It stopped working after most of the apps reinstalled themselves. Which had me thinking while I wrote this, that even though I got it to work in Safe Mode, why would it keep working. I just checked and it stopped again. I tried disabling a few apps before but that didn't help. I'm going to try disabling one app at a time until I find the offending one. (Unless someone has a better idea) I'm all ears.

Is every app up to date? Have you tried after everything is installed just clearing the data on google now it would be google search app to see if that helped!

First, all my apps are up to date. I have Google Play auto-update most of my apps, the others I check.
Second, I don't have an app named "Google Search" on my phone. So I cleared the cache and data from all Google apps. Unfortunately, it didn't help. Thanks for trying.

New occurrence! I tried a web site called "Justanswers". They have "experts" in different fields including Android. After trying different things, they decided it was a memory problem and I needed a new phone. They never suggested Safe Mode. That didn't sit right because it would work for a few minutes whenever I restarted the phone and in Safe Mode. Well I put it in Safe Mode again and "OK Google" has been working Since the evening of 3/28. It's just difficult to type with my fingers crossed. ;)

Good question, but no I don't. I got rid of them a while ago. I used to like Clean Master in the old days. It was handy to clean out orphan files. Then the company changed and it got way to big and invasive. No battery extenders either, but like I said earlier, it's working again and I don't know why. All I did was put it in safe mode (like I did before), set up "OK Google",(like I did before), and restart my phone. Very strange.

Obviously some sort of rogue app is on your phone.

Back in the day, this was simple - you signed in to AppBrain, it grabbed your installed app list and you made it public so people could help.

I just tried my old login - I can't make sense of the site now. Wrote admin, hopefully...

I know how you feel. I tried the same thing. They used to have a list of apps by time. I was to use that but I couldn't figure it out either. Before hitting "post" I went back to Appbrain to check. The list of my apps were by time. If you look closely, there is a small icon on the right side between "Pending Changes" on top and "Installed Apps" underneath with "sort" and arrows. If you tap that, you get all the sort choices. The "Pending changes" is messed up because most of them are already updated. You can still control the update by long pressing on the app. Hope that helps.

Great find, thanks. I do have Airdroid installed, before and now and "OK Google" is working. Under Google Play Services, now I have 438 installed, I should update to 446 correct?

Thanks again. The the thing that's upsettingis "OK Google" is working now so I don't know if helps or not. Doesn't matter though I can't thank you enough for all your help. :thumbsupdroid:

EarlyMon: Is the above link/apk for Google Play Services for all carriers? The version on my Sprint M8 is 5.3.6
That's way old, not sure why.

I'm running 7.0.99 on both a rooted and stock unrooted (Lollipop) Sprint M8.

Although - something seems momentarily borked at the download site - I just tested the last two builds and got install failures.

So, if that hits you, try again later.

I was running 7.0.99...438. I just downloaded and installed 7.0.99...446 a few minutes ago without a problem. I just checked again and I downloaded it w/o a problem.

God, I'm an idiot.

Nobody listen to me.

From the source - and I forget this every time -

The types are:
  • Version number has -X10 - universal armeabi CPU
  • Version number has -X12 - 160 DPI & armeabi CPU
  • Version number has -X14 - 240 DPI & armeabi CPU
  • Version number has -X30 - universal armeabi-v7a CPU
  • Version number has -X32 - 160 DPI & armeabi-v7a CPU
  • Version number has -X34 - 240 DPI & armeabi-v7a CPU
  • Version number has -X36 - 320 DPI & armeabi-v7a CPU
  • Version number has -X38 - 480 DPI & armeabi-v7a CPU
  • Version number has -X46 - 320 DPI & arm64-v8a CPU
  • Version number has -X70 - x86 CPU
And our version needs to end in 38.

So, Google Play services 7.0.99 (1809214-438) is the latest for the M8.
