Root ok so i want to root my evo but

im not sure what rom and kernel to use or for that matter what would be best for my usage. i get heavy use out of my phone, sms, mms, email, my phone doesnt stop. the one thing that kills me is the horrible battery life. i would like the longer battery life and something that i can work with or customize (just like screwing around with new stuff). ive read the rooting for dummies and ready to do it just not sure what to use since there seems to be so many
 
You'll get varying answers.. You just have to play with different ROMs til you find one you like.

For a ROM I'm using - mikfroyo 4.5
Kernel - netarchy-toastmod-4.3.2-cfs-nosbc-havs-more-universal-signed

I get pretty good battery life idling, but I think if you're a heavy phone and text user, you'll only get so far.
 
I hear you vinnie I rooted my phone a couple days ago...... I'm still a bit hesistant flashing a new rom but I'm messing with the netarchy kernels right now trying to find one that will increase by battery life..... Do alot of reading and don't hesitate to ask people here are very friendly and willing to help....

First off, Welcome to the forum! You're right, there ARE very many ROM's to choose from. To narrow down the available options, you have to ask yourself a question.....Is 4g or everything working important to you? If so, you're going to want a Sense based ROM; I recommend Myn's Warm, Mikfroyo, or VaelPak (has everything working w/ almost all Sense UI removed, if you don't like sense); they're fast, stable, and not buggy.

As far as kernels are concerned, a lot of forum members have had great success w/ Netarchy. You can find his kernels here.

The best advice I can give you is, keep flashing till you find a ROM/kernel combination that suits you and provides you w/ the performance/battery life you're seeking. Keep in mind that every Evo's different, and what ROM/kernel combination may work great for one group, may prove to be unstable for another.

Are you using SetCPU in conjunction w/ NA's kernel? If so, what governor are you using? Smartass or the default, Conservative?

No :( I tried it out, but the slider rebooted me too many times.. lol

I've been meaning to retry it and leave it underclocked instead of overclocking which is where the reboot happens. Do you think SetCPU improves battery for phone and screen on more than a kernel?

I'm reinstalling it now and going to set it on conservative.

When scaling your cpu up, did you set it all the way to the max? Not very many Evo's can handle anything above 1152 w/o locking up. I don't know if SetCPU improves battery life more than just a kernel by itself, BUT, I DO know they work well together. My settings are as follows:

Conservative Governor, Max: 1152, Min: 245, screen off profile 245 min., 245 max.

I can easily get 24-40 hours with moderate usage and about 72 hours off one charge with light usage (that entails a lot of idling and using the phone in spurts, ie: sending texts, emails, browsing).

Give those settings a try and let me know how it goes for you.

Oh yeah, one more thing. Whenever you're changing your settings in SetCPU, leave the "Set On Boot" box unchecked, you don't want to scale your CPU too high, causing your phone to lock up, and have it stay at that setting every time your phone boots up! When you've completed making changes that are to your liking, check it.

there for the most part two main types of roms:
sense based roms which have 4g and hdmi working. they are probably the most stable roms out there. good ones that i like are mikfroyo 4.5 and king ultra unleashed r2
aosp roms which do not have 4g and hdmi working. though there are some betas like cm7 that do have 4g working. i'm a sense guy, but right now i'm trying out the destroyer rom [ROM]DESTROYER...ready to wreck your evos face!!!! - xda-developers. i like it so far. gonna give it a few more days though.

like it has been stated preferences will differ. once you are rooted and you flash your first custom rom, i guarantee that you will be addicted. it seems like as of late that i flash a rom almost every week. to try something new.
 
I also rooted to get better performance but it was on my Hero. Once I was introduced to rooting I was hooked! I rooted my evo after about 2 weeks. This phone is so much more thanks to the development community. I can most absolutely recommend rooting once you read and understand what you are doing. Read the rooting for dummies section several times, and if you don't understand anything, just ask! The folks here will help you, awesome community. Frenchy and ocnbrze above have helped me several times. ;)
 
guys thank you so much for the help and the links. im sure ill be hooked on flashing roms once i finally understand what im doing. guess ill be giving this root thing a try tomorrow and i know where to come if i run into any hang ups. thanks again.
