Root Ok, time to nandroid...

Ok, so I dove into ROM's over the past few weeks, and boy do I ever see what I was missing... I used to think ROM's weren't for me. Too risky, seen way too many people clambering on here with bricked phones, didn't see how anyone could possibly improve a device any better than the OEM', blah, blah, blah.... Now I'm just about to the point where I feel like if you have an Android phone, and DON'T play around with different ROM's, then you've basically bought a Ferarri and have yet to push the speedo needle past 55 mph.... COME ON MAN!!!

Ok, so down the point already... I have a pretty good hang of flashing ROM's from zip files placed on the root of the SD card. But now I'm wanting to flash back to a previous nandroid I made of GummyJar. I've nandroided all of the ROM's I've tried, and I have two nanroids of my clean .340 just to have. I just flashed Rubix Focused yesterday, and it has slowed my phone down considerably... why? I have no idea. I really like the theme, especially the check boxes, I really dig how they designed them in a somewhat 3 dimensional way or whatever. But, I have all kinds of lag in my home screens and app drawer, and I've been having all sorts of funky things going on with my widgets changing around or flat out disappearing for no apperant reason. So I'm opting to go back to GummyJar, that's been my favorite all-around ROM so far.

But I don't know how to do it, unless I do it through ROM Manager. But if I bootstrap and wipe the cache and data, then how do I get to my nandroids from there. If I choose 'install zip from SD card'... well, a nandroid isn't a zip, is it? Do you have to wipe data and cache when you're flashing a nandroid? I just assumed you did, but I really don't know.

I guess I'd feel better about it if I wiped data and cache before flashing my nandroid just so's I'd know there was nothing left hanging around to slow things down, or screw things up. I just don't know how to find my nandroidns on my SD card when I bootstrap and am in recovery.

Thanks in advance.

Don't need to worry about wiping before restoring a nandroid - the restore clears everything.

As for where, I always just do this in recovery without using rom manager, and then selecting backup/restore->restore gives me a list of my nandroids (using clockworkmod recovery). If that doesn't work then rom manager must put them somewhere else - which would be dumb, since if you need a nandroid you probably can't get to rom manager! But if so, try copying your nandroid into that folder and see if recovery finds it then.

I'm assuming clockworkmod recovery - if you use amon ra I don't know.

Actually I do remember seeing them in there before, thanks for jarring my memory. Now as for not doing the data/cache wipe... ok for the sake of argument let's just agree that it's not needed... but it also won't do any harm... right?

Call me obsessive, but it just seems like the natural thing to do. I know some famous artists have painted some of their greatest masterpieces ontop of other masterpieces. But me, I like to start with a fresh canvas. ;)

No, it won't do any harm to wipe before.

Having watched a few nandroid restores in my time, I'm pretty sure it starts with messages like "formatting /system" and "formatting /data", in which case it really does wipe everything before installing.

Hmmm.... maybe I'll try doing it that way then and see if that's the case. If so, then I guess it truely would be a waste of time.
